Description
UNITED STATES SPENCER LEW IS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEAD-FASTENING S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16,093, dated November 18, 1856.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SPENCER LEWIS, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a section taken through axes of rail and line at of Fig. 3 previous to tightening the joint. Fig. 2 is a similar section after the joint is tightened. Fig. 3 is an elevation of post-square with a section of rail attached thereto by the fastening hereinafter to be described. 7
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the fastening of an inclined pin running downward through the mortise and a perforation in the tenon of the rail, combined with a swinging segmental plate on the face of the post-square and with a stud on the rail, downward pressure on the rail serving to bring its end against the face of the post, and also drawing the segmental plate close to the rail and against the stud on the same, so that a tight joint will be formed and the rail rendered incapable of turning.
In the drawings, P is the post, having in its square an oblong mortise m.
R is the rail, formed in a lathe and having cylindrical tenons 15 upon its ends. Obliquely downward through the post-square is bored a passage for a pin B, a hole for the passage of this pin being also bored through the tenon t.
Upon the face of the post-square and capable of movement about a pin attach menta is the segmental guard G, whose inner edge is an arc of a circle of the diameter of the rail. On the upper portion of the rail is a stud b.
To fasten the rail to the post, the tenon t is inserted at the top of the mortise, as shown in Fig. 1, and the pin B passed downward through channel 0 and. the perforation in the mortise. Downward pressure on the rail carries the tenon into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the inclined pin B drawing the end of the rail close to the face of the post. As the rail slips downward the guard G, turning on its attachment a, adjusts itself to the rail, bringing its upper end in contact with the stub b on the rail, and the fastening is completed. This guard serves to cover any portion of the mortise which might be exposed by the use of a small rail, so that rails of any diameter may be employed. The guard and stud, IIIOIGOVGI,SOIV6 to relieve the tenon from side strain on the pin, which by the turning of the rail might split the tenon.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The inclined pin passing through post and tenon, as described, in combination with the segmental guard G and stud 1), operating substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
SPENCER LEWIS.
