Temporary Binder.
Patent'ed March 2,1875.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS WITN ESSES W dyoka;
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOTO.-LITH.39&4I PARK PLAGE,N-Y-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I ABRAM A. GOLDSMITH, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,4 [9, dated March 2, 1875; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM A. GOLDSMITH, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in. Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse section of my letter file and binder. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my needle, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of my letter file and binder. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the same.
This invention has relation to needle letterfiles, which are designed for filing away letters in the order of their arrival or dates, and for subsequently binding the same in book-form; and the nature of the invention consists in a detachable pointed and shouldered needle or needles, which are inserted into vertical perforations in one edge of a board, and are prevented from casual displacement therefrom by means of keys inserted into the eyes of the needles below the board, whereby the said keys may be removed and a thread inserted into the eye and drawn through the mass of letters after the needle, thereby providing a convenient and useful means for putting let ters in shape for being tied together in bookform, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the board of my improved letter-file, which is mortised into or otherwise suitably secured to two side strips, to a, which raise it slightly above the base of the said strips, as shown in Fig. 2, and which project slightly above the upper horizontal surface for the purpose ofobtaining a means of holding the letters in place upon the board. b b designate two preferably cylindrical sockets, which are inserted and rigidly secured into vertical perforations through one of the edges of the board A, into which are inserted two needles, B, having, in cross-section,
triangular blades 0, which gradually enlarge from their points to the center of their length, from which they decrease, and finally merge into cylindrical shanks 0, below which is a reduced cylindrical part, 0", through which an eye, d, is formed.
It will be observed that this construction insures a shoulder, d, which will prevent the said needles from penetrating too far through the sockets b b, as shown in Fig. 1, when they are placed in position, points upward, in the board.
0 designates a spring-key, which is passed into the eye d of the needles, and prevents their upward displacement.
WVhen a sufficient number of letters have been placed upon the needles I withdraw the keys 0 from their eyes, and having passed a suitable cord or wire, 6, into them, I draw the said needles through the mass of letters carrying the cord or Wire with them, as shown in Fig. 3, when, by detaching the cord from the needles, the two ends thereof may be tied together, thereby forming a book, as it is called, wherein the letters are arranged in the order of their reception, and in convenient form for future reference.
The center of the blade of the needle being larger than either the shank or the reduced portion 0 thereof below the shoulder cl, the perforations in the letters will be larger than any part of the said needles, hence they may be readily and easily drawn through the mass, and all fear of the needles becoming un threaded is effectually obviated.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The filin g-needles B, havin g triangular blades 0, merging into cylindrical portions 0 shoulders d, reduced portions 0 and eyes d, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABRAM A. GOLDSMITH.
Witnesses:
I. N. BEAUDROT, R. F. FRIEND.
