IMPROVEMENT IN RUBBER-COVERED SNAFFLE-BITS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,344, dated March 2, 1875; application filed February 17, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. NODINE, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Rubber-Covered snaffle-Bits, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide a snaffle-bit with a rubber covering to protect the metal and prevent injury to the animals mouth, and at the same time leave the joint uncovered, perfectly flexible, and free from any liability to being clogged by the rubber covering.

My invention consists in covering the two bars of the bit with conical tubes of rubber, which extend from the outer ends of the bit to, but not over, the middle joint thereof, which is thus left entirely uncovered, this arrangement of the covering preventing the joint from becoming clogged, and thereby inflexible.

The rubber tubular coverings are conical in their form, and terminate outwardly in bulbous enlargements, which fit over the loops or outer joints of the bit, Where they are secured, so as to prevent the covering from slipping down and covering the middle joint, and thereby prevent its free movement.

In the accompanying drawings, B B indicate the jointed sections of my improved snaffle-bit, and A the rubber covering of the same.

The sections B are, as usual, somewhat enlarged toward their outer ends,-and this necessitates a similar form in the rubber covering, as shown. The outer ends of the coverings A A are enlarged to form the bulbs a, Which it is intended shall clasp the loops 1) at the outer ends of the bit. The object of this device is to protect the animals mouth from contact with the outer loops or joints of the bit, and also to provide means for securing the coverings and preventing them from slipping inward toward the middle joint 0. This joint is intended to remain uncovered, and for this purpose the rubber coverings A terminate at the point where the ends of the sections are enlarged into rings to form the loops of the joint 0. By this arrangement of the covering the middle joint is secured against any liability to getting clogged, and is thus kept flexible. The bulbs a are securely fastened around the loops b and outer ends of the bit. They are, of course, slitted'in order that they may be drawn over the bit, but are afterward secured, as before stated.

YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A snaffle-bit partially covered with conical sections A A, of rubber, which leave the middle joint of the bit uncovered, but terminate at their outer ends in bulbs a, which embrace the loops 1) at the ends of the bit, substantially as herein shown and described.
