JARRING DEVICE.
Jarring devices have different uses. In a patent issued to me Dec. 31st, 1918. #l,289,677 I have shown a arring device adapted for packing castings and the pres ent invention is adapted for asimilar use. It is desirable with such machines to violently reciprocate the plunger and air is bettcr adapted for actuating the plunger for shaking purposes than water as indicated in my former patent. on the other hand for locating the platform water is more desirable because it can be better controlled. The invention here has particular reference to controlling such a plunger mechanism and valve device which is adapted for handling air.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a central sec tion of the apparatus, in which 1 marks the platform on which the device may be placed, 2 the adjusting plunger on which the platform is mounted, and 3 a reciprocating plunger having a chamber in which the adjusting plunger operates having a pipe 4 supplying the chamber with water for ad usting the adjustable plunger. The pipe 4 is provided with a fiexible'connection 5 permit; ting the adjustment of the plunger. The shaking plunger 3 is mounted in a cylinder 6 to which the air is admitted and exhausted for accomplishing the shaking action.
The cylinder 6 has an inlet port 7. A pipe 7* leads from the inlet port 7 to the chamber 8 in an inlet valve body 8. An opening 9 leads from the chamber 8 to a chamber 10. The chamber 10 is connected to an air supply by way of a pipe 11. A valve 12 controls the opening 9. A spring 13 tends to close this valve, the valve being of the poppet valve type, that is, closing and opening by a movement toward and from its seat. An exhaust port 14 leads from the cylinder (3 and is controlled by a valve 15 which is between the port and a chamber 16 arranged in a body 17. The body 17 is secured in a pocket formed in a projection 18 on the cylinder 6. An exhaust passage 19 leads from the passage 16 to the atmosphere.
A piston 20 is arranged in a cylinder 21 in the body 17. A stem 22 extends from the valve 15 to the piston 20. The stem projects through the piston and through a head 23 with the gland 24 and engages the valve 12,
the stem having an extension 25 which projects inti; the valve 12 so as to guide and control it, the end of the extension having a shoulder 26 as to force a moven'ient of the valve 12 with a closing movement of the exhaust valve 15. The stem is secured to the p ston by a tapered shoulder 22 and a nut 22. The cylinder has a vent opening 20 for exhausting the air from it.
in the operation of the device air is admitted 'th? ugh the cylinder 21 back of the piston. l .11 the shaking plunger reaches its upper position this immediately forces the piston forward opening the valve 15 and thus opening the exhaust and permitting the the closingof the valve 12, thus cutting off the air supply. One valve involves the operation of the other. As soon as the shaking plunger drops the air is cut off from the cylinder 21 and the air back of the piston escapes through the vent 20. A spring 27 operating on the piston forces the piston toward the right closing the valve 15 and again opening the valve 12. It will be noted that the exhaust valve 15 is large, thus permitting a rapid discharge of air and consequently a quick drop of the shaking plungor so as to effect a shock on the material on the platform 1. The cylinder has the inlet port 28 which is connected by a pipe 29 with the control valve. The control valve has a port 30 leading to the pipe 29 in the controlling valve body 31. A chamber 32 is formed in the body 31 and this is connected by a pipe 33 with the supply pipe 11. A plunger valve operates in a cylinder 34 in the body 31 below the chamber 32. The valve 35 has an opening 36 operating over the port 30 and connecting the same with the chamber when. the valve is lifted, thus permitting air to be delivered to the port 30 and the pipe 29 and to the cylinder. The poppet valve 38 is provided which operates on the tapered seat 39, thus assuring a complete closure. A spring 40 tends to close the valve. A stem 41 extends from the valves 35 and 38 through a gland 42 in the body. A bracket 43 is secured on an car 44 .extending from the shaking plunger 3 and the stem 41 extends through this bracket. An adjustable shoulder 45 on the stem 41 is in the path of the bracket 43 as the shaking plunger is moved upwardly.
The operation of this controlling valve is as follows: With the parts in the position shown in the drawings air is being admitted under the shalni plunger as it is rising. When the plunger bracket d3 contacts the shoulder -11 "he valves 35 and 38 are opened admitting air to the cylinder 21 and this operating on the piston opens the exhaust valve 15 and closes the inlet valve 12. The plunger immediately drops and as the plunger drops the sprin l0 closes the valve 35 and the spring then closes the exhaust valve and opens the inlet valve. Shoulders d6 ma; be provided so as to assure a positive action of the valves 35 and 38.
Limiting stops l? are arranged on the shaking plunger so as to prevent the plunger being expellm it there is any accident to the valve mechanism.
that 1 clain as new is 1. In a jarring device the combination of a plunger, a valve mechanism controlling the pressure on the plunger comprising inlet and exhaust passages; a valve device controlling said inlet and exhaust passages comprising poppet valves with stationary and opposing seats; a connection between said valves permitting a relative movement of the valves; a pressure motor actuating said valve device; a controlling valve controlling the motor; and means controlled by the plunger for controlling the controlling valve.
in a jarring device, the combination of a platform; ahydraulic plunger for adjusting the platform; a shaking air-driven plunger carrying the hydraulic plunger; and an automatically actuated valve controlling mechanism t'orcontrolling the air actuating the air driven plunger to vibrate the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto
