This invention relates to a carboy holder. An object of the invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient holder for carboys in which the likelihood of the carboy breaking is reduced to a minimum.
A further object concerns the provision of a simple and efficient liquidproof lining which, if the carboy happens to break, will prevent the fluid within the carboy from flowing out of the holder.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the holder, and
Figure 2 lis a plan View.
In its general aspect the invention comprises a carboy holder, preferably in the form of a keg or barrel, suitable for con taining a carboy in which acid or corrosive liquid is disposed. This holder is preferably lined on the inside with an acid-resistant composition suiliciently soft to withstand shocks without cracking. This lining may be, and preferably is,l made of a mixture of pitch and tar, or paratn or resin and oil, with an inert material, such as asbestos, mineralor glass-wool, silica, talcum, fireclay, sulphur or graphite. Disposed between the carboy and this lining is a packing material,
which is preferably made of light voluminous material which is preferably acidproof, such material being asbestos or mineralor glass-wool, infusorial earth or mica, preferably in the form of the material called zonolite, which is heat-treated mica, and also carbonized sawdust, or, in general, charcoal, coke or coal in the form of a coarse powder.
In accordance with 'the present invention the holder for the carboy is light in weight, occupies much less space than a square box, and is much safer, inasmuch as when a bottle or carbov breaks the acid will not immediately run` out on the ground or the ioor or railway car or wherever the holder may be disposed, but will 4remain in the box for a sufficient length of time to allow the acid to be emptied into another holder.
The preferred packing material is a light, .voluminous material, and the object of using this packing inside ofthe lining is to reduce t'he weight, and insome cases we alternate rm layers of the lightwoluminous mate- The layi ers of mineral-wool act to keep the glass Serial No. 38,363.
paint In the preferred form of the 'invention shown in the drawings, the holder comprises a keg or barrel provided with staves 11. Disposed within the keg is an acidproof lining which is sufficiently flexible to resisty cracking when the holder is jarred. Such a lining may be formed of various mixtures of pitch or asphalt and tar with an inert ma` terial such as asbestos, kieselguhr or a mixture of zonolite and slag-wool or similar material. Within the lining 12 is disposed a packing 13,which immediately surrounds the carboy itself. This packing 13 is an.v acid-proof, light material; it may be heattreated mica., kieselguhr or a mixture of the heat-treated mica, with slagor mineralwool. In the latter case, the mica and the slag-wool are preferably used in alternate layers. The packing material is covered on top with a layer of tar paper or cardboard 14, and over this is disposed a layer 15 of the lining material previously described and designated-12. This prevents moisture or Water from penetrating the packing. The top of the keg'is closed by a cover 16." The neck of the carboy 17 projects slightly beyond the top of the keg in the usual manner.
In providing this construction of holder, therefore, we have enabled the carboy to be disposed in a holder without the use of an excessively heavy material to cushion the carboy and prevent its being broken. At the same time we use these light-materials to cushion the carboy, we also protect not only the outside ofthe holder from being affected by the acid or corrosive mixture within the carboy in the event it is broken, but we also provide means which will absorb a considerable portion if not all of the contents to prevent it being wasted.
1. A carboy holder comprising a container having a carboy disposed therein, the
neck of the carboy extending. through the top of the container, a light, voluminous packing material surrounding the carboy,4v and an acidproof lining disposed between the packing material and the inner Walls of the container and completely enclosing the packing material.
2. A carboy holder which comprises a container having a carboy disposed therein, the neck of the carboy extendin through the top of the container, pac ing material around the carlooy7 and a completely enclosing acidproof lining around the packing.
3. A carboy holder which comprises a container, an acidproof lining covering the inner Walls thereof, a light, voluminous packing Within the lining, a cover of suitable material disposed over the packing adjacent the neck of the carboy and Within the lining, and a Wooden cover disposed over the lining at the end of the container adjacent the neck of the carboy, the neck of the carboy extending through the top of the container.
