UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
CARL E. PEARSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOE TO TEAS-LE COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, 01-110, A CORPORATION OF @3110.
ELECTRICAL CONDENSER.
Application filed March 1, 1923.
This invention relates to electric condensers and particularly to condensers suitable for use in primary circuits oi' ignition generators.
The chief objects of the invention are coinprised in the provision of a coudcns hatis simple and rugged structurally, easily as sen'lbled, and ciiiective and reliable in use.
Other objects, more or less ancillary to the foregoing, will be apparent from the following description in which the preferred form of construction is set forth in connection with the accoi'npenyingr drawing.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a front eleva tion oi? n'ry improved condenser as mounted on the frame structure of a magneto.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22. Fig.1. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the brol-uzn line 3-3, F ig. 1, showing respectively the parts as they appear before and utter the securing screws are driven home. i
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5, Fin; 1.
' Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the coin denser parts in separated. or disassembled relation so as to more clearly show the construction. 1
Fig. 7 is a face elevation and Figs. 8 and 9 are edge elevations of the conductor terminal fitting employed.
Referring in detail to the construction. il lustrated, 1 is a portion 01 the magneto nietallic frame on which the condenser is mounted or supported. The condenser proper consists of a pack made up of metal foil conductor sheets 2, 3, and interposed diciectrio sheets 4. The conductor sheets 2 and 3 are preferably made of tinfoil and the dielectric sheets of mica. The alternate co ductor sheets 2 extend at the upper end oi the'pack and are folded over on the front side thereof, as shown. Similarly, the alternate conductor sheets 3 extend at the lower end of the pack and are folded over on the front side thereof.
on the two ends of the pack are n'iounteail sheet metalclips 5. 6 which are pre'i'erahly formed of hard sheet brass 0.00:? thick. The pack with the end clips applied is in sulated from the support 1 by a sheet '7 of suitable n'iaterial such as in'iprcgnated or vulcanized fibre. The condenser is secu ed to the support 1 by upper and lower no sections 8 and 9 which are preferably stamped from #18 gauge sheet brass and Serial No. 622,021.
are partially hardcnec. The casing section 8 is formed at one side with a soclzeted and apertured lug 8 and at its other side with a similar lug 8 At its top side said section 8 is formed at one side with flanges 8, 8 and at its lei t side with a flange 8 and at its right side with a flange 8 In a similar manner the casin section 9 is formed with socketed and aperture- d lugs 9, 9". bottom flanges 9 0, and side flanges 9% 9 The casing section 8 which S81 es to clamp the upper part of the condenser to the support 1 is secured to the said support by means of screws 10, 11. Said casing section 8 is electrically insulated from the support 1 by washers 12 which are interposed between the soclteted lugs of the casing section 8 and bosses 1 formed on the support. And said casing section is electrically insulated from the screws 10 and 11 by washers 13 13 the edges of which engage the socket walls of the lugs 8, 8 and hold them out of engagement with the shanks of the screws, said shanks being smaller in diameter than the apertures oil the lugs through which they pass.
Between the lug S" and the head of the screw 11 is arranged a conductor terminal fitting 14; which is in electrical contact with the casing section 8 but by cngagen'ient of its flange 14; with the aperture of the lug 8 is held out of contact with the screw 11. This terminal fitting; 14. is formed with an upturned flange or lug li in the aperture of which is soldered the end of the insulated conductor 15. The fitting 1d is also formed with a flange 14 which is curled around the end of the insulation 15" of the conductor and serves to hold the latter in position and protect the soldered joint from undue stresses.
The casing section 9 which overlies the lower end of: the condenser is secured. to the support 1 by screws 16, 17 which pass through the apcrtured lugs 9. 9 and by engagement therewith serve to electrically connect the section 0 to the support.
on the clips 5 and 6 so as to prevent thei: displacement from the ends 01-. the condenses pack. Between the clips a o outer face 0" the condenser a filler sheet 20 of any suit material.
In assembling and mounting the er, he pack comprising the trio set: o d1 ctor sheets and the dielec' shee piled up and the endil I sheets 2 and 3 are folded over 5 and 6 are applied to them. ing pack i then laid "anon the insulating sheet 7 hr ring first in position. The spacer or 1 n on the 1 uni the springs 18 an clips 5 and G and the casing placed in position Then tating washers and the corfitting 1- a 'e placed into 1 securing screws applied. L f I'M.
Lions 8 and 9 a rein-led curve or how, as she in when the securing screws are as shown in Fig. l, an eilect' the casin ctions 8 and 9 or.
re "a pack is lllSLll'GC throughout 1 With the parts thus asser t ed it will be seen that the set oi support 1 and are electricallv through the clip 5, the casing ii the terminal fitting ii to the cor; which is designed to lead to one ton iinal the breaker ot' the magneto. @n the other hand, the other set of conductor heets 3 is el ctrically connected through clip 6, casing section 9 and screws 16, 1'? with the magneto frame 1 and thence to ground.
It will be seen that I hare provideC i condenser, the main conductor sheets and dielectric sheets of which are maintained intact and free from pertorations of 1 sort. t will also he noted that no rel' is placed upon soldered joints for elect l v connecting the conductor sheets but that they are mechanically secured in electrical contact by strong and simple parts h ch can be relied upon to remain under ditions in proper working orde It ther obvious that the co: denser can senihled qr the invention being indicated in the appended claims.
