CHARLES H. BUESCH, OI KENOSHA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 'I'O SIMMONS COMPANY, 013' KENQSHA, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF DELA'WARE.
KNOB MOUNTING.
' Application. filed May 5, 1923. Serial No. 636,797.
My invention relates to, improvements in lrnob mountings and has particular reference to an improved connection or mounting for knobs or handles on the exterior-sofdoors, panels or drawers.
'Ihe principal ob ect of my invention is to provide a construction whereby a knobor handle may be securely and rigidly attached vide a construction which may be cheaply,
and rapidly produced while being neat and simple in design and appearance; and in general to provide animproved rugged and efficient connection of the character referred to.
In the drawings which illustrate a specific embodiment of my invention as applied to the front of adresser, Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken through the knob and drawer front to which it is attached.
perspective View of the locking is to be secured. As shown in Figs. 1 and 1, the said knob is hollow, constructed of sheet metal, there being inserted into the .back end of said knob-12, what in the trade is known as a pommel13, said pommel 13 comprising a disk of fairly heavy gauge sheet steel, the outer portion of the disk being corrugated as shown at 1 1 so that when the flange or bead 15 of the knob is pressed or formed around the pommel 13 to secure the latter in position in the knob, the metal of the said flange 15 will belindented in o said corrugations, thereby locking said disk 13 rigidly and permanently into the open rear end of the knob 12. r
The pommel 13 is made with a centrally threaded aperture for receiving a threaded connector 16 which is inserted from the rear of the panel 10 and extends through an aperture punched in the latter.
Preferably,
in order to provide more threads in; the metal of the pommel 13 for the screw 16 to take hold of, I prefer to punch a central hole in the pommel 13 by means of a point ed member so that there will be formed a plurality of triangular lugs 17 extending substantially parallel with the aXis of the aperture and adding materially to the length of the threaded aperture There are also punched in the pommel 13 apair of diametrically opposite apertures 18, symmetrically disposed, one either side of the central aperture 19 and in-the panel 10 there are punched a pair of similar and correspondingly disposed apertures. 20. Preferably, the screw connector 16- takes' the form of a cap screw with around head 21 located on the inside of the panel and between said head and the panel there is interposed a locking member which takes the form of a washer 22 having formed thereon a pair of diametrically opposite, symmetrically disposed lugs or tongues 23 bent to extend substantially parallel with the aXis of the connector 16 and at distances apart cor responding with the spacing of the apertures 18 and 20. The lugs 23 are of such size as to pass freely through the apertures 20 on the panel and into apertures 18 of the pommel 13, thereby positively and effectively preventing relative rotation of the panel and pommel and by reason of the latter, the knob 12.
Preferably, in order to fill in the slight spaces 24: between the pommel 13 and the panel 10, caused by the. presence of the flange 15, and to prevent possible distortion of the panel 10 when the connector 16 is screwed home, I prefer to insert in said spaces and around said screw between said parts, a plain metal washer 25.
The described details of construction be.- ing illustrative of merely one phase of my invention, it will be observed that the scope of same should be determined by reference to the appended claims, said claims being construed as broadly as possible, consistent with the state of the art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a panel, a knob thereon, a screw extending through the panel and into the knob and having a head on the side of the panel opposite from the knob and a member interposed between the head of said screw and said knob and interlocked with said panel and knob for preventing rotation of said knob on the panel.
2. In combination, a panel, a knob thereon, a screw extending through the panel and into the knob and having a head on the side of the panel opposite from the knob and a member interposed between the head of said screw and said panel and interlocked with said panel and knob for preventing rotation of said knob on the panel, said part being provided with an eceentrically disposed lug extending through the panel and into the handle.
3. In combination, a panel, a knob on the front thereof provided with an internally threaded member adjacent said panel, a headed screw inserted through the panel from the back thereof and engaging said internally threaded member, a washer interposed between the head of said screw and the back surface of said panel and provided with an integral lng extended a distance from the axis of said screw and in a direction longitudinal of said axis, said panel and said knob being provided respectively with openings for receiving and interlocking with said lug whereby rotation of said knob on said panel is prevented.
l. In combination, a panel, a knob thereon, a screw extending through the panel and into the knob and having a head on the side of the panel opposite from the knob, said screw serving to secure said knob in position on said panel, and a kc member interposed between the head of said screw and said knob and interlocked with said panel and said knob for preventing rotation of said knob on the panel, said screw also serving to secure said key member in position.
5. In combination, a panel member, a handle member on the face of the panel, said handle comprising a body portion and a base portion in interlocking engagement so as to prevent relative rotation therebetween, a headed connector extending through said panel and into the base of the handle tor so curing said handle to the panel and an independent member interposed between the head of said connector and said base and interlocked with said panel and base so as to prevent relative rotation between said handle and panel.
