UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
osEUA JAMoUNEAU, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY WIND-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,019, dated February 23, 1875; application filed September 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA JAMOUNEAU, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention, like its prototype, the ordinary paper pin-wheel, has for its object the amusement and diversion of children and youths; and consists in the construction of a light star-shaped wheel, provided with a suitable handle, upon which it is pivoted, and made to revolt e by the wind. It is designed and adapted to be held and carried in the hand, and, when opposed to a current of air, will be caused to revolve very rapidly, affording considerable amusement and diversion to those for whom it is intended.
The wheel A is made of tin or other light material, having the ends or points I) broadened and turned at a proper angle to catch the air, so as to cause it to revolve, and is soldered to the end of a shaft or journal, 0. Said journal 0 revolves upon two bearings, 01 d, some two inches apart, more or less, soldered in a pipe, E, for the purpose of imparting a steady motion. On the end of the shaft opposite the wheel is a nut, f, to prevent the shaft from dropping out of its bearings. In the end of the pipe E, projecting beyond the bearing, is inserted a suitable handle, g, made of wood or any other suitable material.
The wheel may be ornamented and decorated to suit the taste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A toy composed of the wheel A, journal 0, bearings d, pipe E, and handle 9, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my-own invention I hereunto set my hand, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of September, 1874.
JOSHUA JAMOUNEAU.
