. H. A. RIMMER DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING CURTAINS Filed Augilst a, 1925 Patented Sept. 14, 1926 UNITED- STATES PATENT o-Frlca HERBERT ARNOILDV'RIMMEIR, on ANNIESLAND, GnAs GowseoTI-Arrn.
DEVICE on sumo-arr ve c n'rArNsf Application filed August 3,. 1925 Serial No. 48,981; and in Great Britain August '28 1924. l I
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to devices for supporting curtains and thelike. I
Curtains or screens, oi the type known as casement or sash curtains, are fitted to window-sashes by being supportedor mounted on rods .o'r thelike carried by hook-like supports or brackets fitted to the upper ,end of the sash. The endof' the curtain is usually turned over andstitched' to forjni a loop or wh-icli'extends' the breadth of the curta -in and through which the rod is passed. There are two such curtains on each rod and each ,curtain, when drawn forward-o1 extended, covers 7 one half of the window.
Then the window ism be uncovered the curtains are pushed back or separated troin each other and draped down each side of the window. I H i The ohjectof this invention isto provide thecurtain rod or thelike with improved devices adapted .to facilitate the fitting of the curtain on the'grod, the-drawing forward or. extension of the curtain and the drawing back or draping of the curtainlevenly down the sides of the window.
7 According to this invention these iin- 1 proved devices minister a rod or the like carried by suitable brackets and having two caps ingunted thereon one at each end of 831118; Two springs are also mounted on the rod and are secured one to each cap while catch devices adapted to engage each other are secured to the ,7 adjacent ,ends of the springs. Preferably the said catch devices comprise flanges having tonguesadapted to engage each other and provided'on sleeves secured to the springs and mounted on the rod.
In order that others skilled in the artto which this invention relates'may properly understand the same I have hereunto appended one sheet of explanatory drawings in -which Figure 1 is a front elevation, shown broken for convenience of illustration, of a pair of sash or casement curtains,
shown diagrammatically, mounted on a rod provided with springs according to this invention. Figure 2 is a plan View, partly in section, corresponding to Figure 1. Figures 3, 4 and 5, illustrate certain details which Will be'hereinafter referred to more particularly.
Referring to these drawings k In carrying this invention into efiect or practice arod, tube or the like a isprovided with two spiral springs b. Theoutei' extremity ofeac'h spring I) is'securedinto' a cap or tlie'like 0 whicli-.fit's,,"it inaybe loosely, on to the end oft-herod a; As illustrated by Figure 3, which comprises an elev'atio'n, a plan View .an'dtwo end viewsof end of the spring wouljdbfe' passed through 't'hegap into the cap with ascrew'ing nioverient so that the'flange '0 acts asa' screw thread which engagesdthe coils of the By turn ng or rotatingy the spring it is 'screwedinto the cap, The outerend oftlie cap 01s provided with an inwardly extending flange Whichact-s'as'a stop and'liihits the nioveinent'ot the spring" andal'sofacts as stop for the end oi the rod withinthe s ri g. As illustrated "by, Figure 4 which comprises a sectionalelevati'on and ane'nd View or a; slightly modified I construction jot cap 0, theinternal dian'ieter of the cap "fits tightly over the coils of the "spring, the
"cap c consistin'go'f a cylinder with one closed eno.

As lllustrated by Figure 5, which c0111.-
prises an end view and a plan view of each of the catch devices, these catch devices consist of a sleeve 0 into which the end of the spring 7) is secured in a similar manner as already described for, the caps c. The sleeves e are provided with flanges 6 having projecting tongues 0 The tongues 01" the p p 1* consist or tubes 22 (which form sockets for the caps flangec having a gap or opening '0 The Y flanges of the sleeve at the end of the one spring are adapted to engage the.tongues of the flange of the sleeve'at the end of the other spring. If desired the flanges 6 may be provided with projections 6 to form a grip so as to facilitate the turning or twisting of the catch devices when engaging or disengaging same.
If desired the cap 0 may be dispensed with and the end of the spring may be anchored to the end of the rod a by having the end coil or coils of the spring of smaller diameter than the other coils so as to form a stop for the end of the rod.
When the catch devices are drawn forwards, towards each other, the springs are extended and are retained in that position by the tongues of the catch devices engaging each other. V
When the springs are extending the curtains are drawn forwards by the loops 7 of the curtains 7 resting upon the springs.
In fitting the curtains or screens f into position the rod on with the springs b is removed from the sockets or tubesd. Each end of the rod and therefore the spring on same is pushed through the loop or casing f oor the curtain f and then the rod and ourtains are replaced on the supports (Z. Preferably the tongues e of the catch devices engage each other with the springs extended While putting the' curtains on the rod. When the catches are released from each other the springs return to their normal posi- 7 the requisite tucker on the curtains and causing equal spacing. By springing back the curtains any loose dust which may have lodged on same is dislodged andsince the curtains do not'require to be pushed back by to support said rod; two caps mounted on said rod, one at each end of same; two pull springs mounted on said rod and secured one to each cap; a sleeve secured to the adjacent end of each spring; a flange on each sleeve; and tongues on each flange, the ton ues of the one flange member being adapte to engage the tongues of the other flange member to releasably hold the latter against contraction.
3. A device for supporting window sash curtains comprising a rod; two spiral springs mounted on said rod; a cap screwed on to the outer end of each spring; a sleeve secured on to the inner and adjacent end of each spring; a radial flange on each sleeve; interengageable tongues on each flange; and brackets adapted to support the ends of said rod and comprising sockets screwed to a plate having flxing means.
4. In a device of the character described. a pair of supporting brackets, sockets carried by the brackets, a supporting rod having its ends seated in the sockets, a pair of coil pull springs on the rod having remote ends fixed against movement, said spring being adapted for insertion in the usual horizontal loop of a curtain, sleeves fixed to the adjacent ends of the springs and slidable upon said rod, and interengageable catches on the sleeves to releasably hold the springs against contraction.
