Application filed August 4, 1924, Serial No. 730,096, and in Australia March 1'7, 1924. v Renewed August 2, 1326 This invention relates to an improved telescopic stay for holding open at a desired distance a casement window, a door or the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a stay by which a casement window, door or the like may be held open at desired distance, such stay consisting of two tubes or a rod and a tube, of suitable shape in cross section, preferably round, one'sliding into and out of the other as the window, door or the like is closed or opened, with a spring controlled catch for locking the two tubes or rod and tube securely at the position desired.
In order that the nature of my invention may be clearly understood reference will be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts in the different figures.
Figure 1 is a view 01': one modification o1 my invention shown in a position holding open a casement window.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the locking mechanism (shown in Figure 1) in its relation to the two tubes.
Figure 3 is a part sectional elevation of the locking mechanism (shown in Figures 2 and 3) in its relation to the two tubes, showing the spring and catch carrier.
Figure 4- is a side elevation of another modification of my invention whilst- Figure 5 is an end elevation of Figure 4.
Reierring to Figures 41- and 5 which show the invention in its simplest form, the tube or red 2 moves into and out of tube 1. The tube 2 has notches 7 on its underside and into a desired notch 7 is sprung the catch 13. The catch 13 may be a spring attached to the tube 1 and having a loop through which the tube 2 passes whilst the catch 13 is depressed, and when in normal position the bight of the loop its snugly into the notch 7 on tube 2.
It will be understood that the spring catch 13 instead of engaging notches on the underside of tube 2 may engage notches on the upper side being lifted out of same as required; or the loop of the spring catch 13 may surround the outer tube 1 and in normal position lie in a notch on tube 1 as well as a notch in tube 2.
Referring to Figure 1, another modification of my invention is shown in which the tubes 1 and 2 are secured by hinges 3 and. 1 to the window Sill 5 and sash 6, a locking device being provided. The tube 2lhas notches 7 and the tube 1 has one notch .8. The lockng dev ce 1s shown more clearly in'Figures 2 and 3, and consists of a cylindrical metal casing 9 secured around the end of the tube 1. Sliding inside this tubular piece 9 is a spring and catch carrier 10 closed at the top end, and having side portions cut away allowing it to fit over the tube 1. A locking pin 11 is placed across the two ends or" the spring and catch carrier 10 and a spring 12 is located in the head or" the said carrier 10 hearing on the tube 1.
In lieu of a spring and catch carrier 10 as described and illustrated having a bifurcated portion and pin 11, a wire of U-shape may be used the ends of which are secured in a thumb piece sliding into the casing 9, the spring 12 being accommodated between said thumb piece and tube 1.
In use the stay is secured by the hinge brackets 3 and 1 to the sill 5 and sash 6 at a distance allowing the window to close whilst the tube 2 is in the tube 1.
Referring again to Figures 1 and 5 when it is desired to open the window the spring catch 13 is depressed and thereby withdrawn'ii'rom the notch 7. Upon release the catch 18 again resumes a normal position in the notch 7 securely holding the tubes 1 and 2 in position until the spring catch 13 is again released.
Referring again to Figures 1, 2 and 3 when it is desired to open the window the catch and spring carrier 10 is pressed down ward in the casing 9 the spring 12 is compressed and the pin 11 is released from the notches 7 and 8 allowing the inner tube 2 to move out of outer tube 1.
On releasing the pressure on the catch and spring carrier 10 the pin 11 again resumes its normal position in notches 7 and 8.
I claim 1. An improved telescopic stay for casement windows doors and the like consisting of a hinged tube, a hingedinner rod having notches, and a spring controlled catch onthe tube engaging one or other of said notches on the rod.
2. An improved telescopic casement and the like stay comprising inner and outer tubes, hinges on their outer ends, notches on the inner tube, a notch on the outer tube, in combination with means for locking the said tubes in position comprising a casing secured to the inner end of the outer tube accommodating a spring and catch carrier having side portions cut away to fit loosely over the outer tube, a locking pin at the end of the said carrier adapted to be normally in the sloton the outer tube and a slot on the inner tube, and a compression spring accommodated in said carrier and on top of the outer tube.
3. A casement or like stay comprising a tube member, a rod member slidable in the tube member, hinge elements at the outer ends of said members to facilitate the attachment of the same to a window sash and frame, one of said members being provided with spaced notches, a bar carried by the other member and engageable With one or the other of said notches for holding the members in adjusted relation, and resilient means connected to said bar for normally holding the bar in one of the notches, said resilient means having a hand engaging portion to pern'lit the operator to force the her out of the notch.
