This invention relates to car coupling devices and particularly to means for con necting ank automatic coupler with a hook coupler. Y
In accordance with the present invention, the coupling means' between the automatic and hook couplers includes two` connected shackles, one of which is freely connected with the automatic coupler and the other of which is freely connected with the hook coupler, said shackles being connected together through the medium of 4a trunnion block provided withtwo pairs of trunnions disposed at right angles to each other, one of said shackles having pivotal yconnection with one pairof trunnions and the other shackle having pivotal connection with the other pair of trunnions of the trunnion block. In the present instance, the pulling block is" shown as being formed at one end with a tongue 9 which enters the intermediate recess 10v in the free end portion of the pivoted knuckle 3. Adjacent to said tongue, the pulling block is provided'with an enlargement 11y forming shoulders which are made to'conform tothe contour of and bear against the rear face of the p'ivoted knuckle. At its other end the pulling block is formed with an extension l2 whichenters a recess or socket 13 in the guard arm of the automatic coupler head. The trunnion block is provided with trunnions 21 disposed at right angles to the trunnions 20,-20 and to trunnions 21 the end portions of the arms of the shackle 18 are pivotally connected whereby the connecting shackles may have horizontal play. It is evident that instead of employing a bolt to provide the trunnions 20, the latter may be formed rigid with the block as are the trunnions 21.
The connecting devices between the automatic and hook couplers and comprising shackles connected together through the medium of a trunnion block, will operate freely and when the hook coupler approaches the automatic coupler, said connected shackles will readily assume the positions shown in Figure 3 without dangerof binding or cramping.
l/vlhen the connecting devices including the shackles andthe pulling block are not in use, they may be suspended from a hook 22 secured to the car end structure l,.as illustrated in Figure 2.

The combination with an automatic coupler including a guard arni and aA pivoted knuckle7 of a pulling block having a part to enter the guard arin and a part to engage the pivoted knuckle, a shackle having its hight engaged around said block, av trunnion block disposed between the ends of the shackle, tiunnions on opposite sides of the Jcrunnioii block engaged in the ends of the shackle, other trunnions on said trunnion block at right angles to th'e Erst-named 10 'gagged over a hook coupler.
