TONGUE-SPAT'ULA ATTACHMENT FOR MOUTH SPECULA.

This invention relates to an attachment for mouth-specula or mouth-gags and has for one of its objects to allow the adjustment of the tongue-spatula in any direction to move the tongue and keep it out of the way in operations about the throat or larynx.

Another ob'ect of this invention is to orovide an adjusting means for a tonguespatula so the tongue-spatula can be moved from one side to the other and placed on a slanting position to draw the side of the tongue away from the side of the throat in which a tonsil is to be removed.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereafter fully described and claimed.

'In the accompanying orawings forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like reference characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages, and the right is therefor reserved of making all the changes and modifications which will fairly fall within the scope of the invention and claims made therefor.

The invention is comprised of the following parts in combination with a mouthspeculum of any of the standard makes, in the drawings I have used one of the common shapes as an illustration.

The reference character, 1 denotes the upper notch, 1 the lower notch of the mouthspeculum, 2 denotes the bracket or support of the invention the upper end thereof being secured by solder or other means to one of the notches in the mouth-speculum.

The reference character 4: denotes a box secured to the lower end of the bracket 2, the sides thereof being open. The top and bottom of said boX has a hole therein through which passes an adjusting bolt or pedestal Between the top and bottom of the box a is placed a thumb not 5 into which is placed the pedestal 6. The thumb nut 5 when operated adjusts the length of the pedestal above the box 4:. 1

On the upper end of the pedestal 6 is placed a ball 7 which is pivotally secured thereon by a cap 8. Projecting from the ball 7 is an arm 9 having a collar 10 and a head 11 thereon. Between the collar 10 and the head 11 is a groove in which operates the slot 22 in-the tongue spatula 14:.

A thumb screw 15 is placed in the lower end of the pedestal 6 and is drawn therein by a thread within a hole lengthwise thereof. On the upper end of the thumb screw 15 is placed a point 16 which is made of hard tool steel and tempered and sticks into the ball 7 by the turning of the thumb screw 15 thus holding the ball 7 in the locked position.

Placed within one side of the pedestal 6 is a slot 25, placed onthe'top of the boX 41- is a lug 26 one end thereof to fit in the slot 25 to prevent the pedestal turning in the movement of the thumb nut 5 to adjust the pedestal.

' Having described the parts of my invention I will now illustrate the operation of the same.

In Fig.2, the invention is shown as applied to the mouth, the jaws A and A are opened by pressing the handles B and B together. The handles are held together by the catch G having notches thereon which catch on the handle B and are held in place by the spring-D, To close the jaws A and A the catch G is moved back drawing the catch off the handle B and allowing the catch to move through th'e'slot E thus spreading thehandles and compressing the jaws to remove them from the mouth.

After the mouthrspeculum is placed into the mouth with the notch 1 on the upper teeth and the notch 1 on the lower teeth, the jaws are on the outside of the face and the handles B and B at the side of the face and the support 2 is on the outside of themouth and in front of the.

The tongue-spatula can be adjusted to any desired angle by the tipping of the ball 7.

If the right tonsil is to be removed the tongue-spatula is tipped'as shown by dotted lines 25 in Fig. 1, and if it be the left tonsil that is tobe removed the tongue-spatula is tipped as shown by dotted lines 27. 1

It must be understood that the thumb screw 15' must be loosened before any of the above movements can be accomplished and then tightened to hold the-ball in place.

In the event that the tongue-spatula is too high the thumb nut 5 is turned to draw the pedestal 6 downward and if too low the thumb nut 5 is turned in the opposite direction.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is; i

1. A tongue-spatula support in combina tion with a mouth-speculum and a tonguespatula, comprising a support the upper end thereof being secured to said mouthspeculum the lower end thereof having a box projectingat a right angle therefrom, the sides of said box being open, the top and bottom of said box having a holetherein, a pedestal passing through said holes, a thumb nut within said box for holding said pedestal therein and. for the adjustment thereof, said pedestal having a thread on the outside thereof which fits in a thread in said thumb nut, said pedestal having a hole lengthwise therein with thread therein to receive a thumb screw.

2. A tongue-spatula support in combination with a mouth-speculum and a tonguespatula comprising a support, the upper end thereof being secured to said mouthspeculum, the lower end thereof having a right-angle projection thereon with a top, bottom and end thereto, a thumb nut operat ing in said projection, a bolt having a thread on the outside thereof and a hole lengthwise therethrough with a thread therein, said bolt being operated through said projection by said thumb nut, a ball placed on the up- .member the upper mouth-speculum,

thread within said bolt the upper end thereof having a point thereon which is pressed into said ball for the holding of said ball in the desired position substantially as 7 described.

3, A mouth speculum attachment in combination with a mouth-speculum and a tonguespatula, comprising a supporting end thereof being secured to said mouth-speculum, the lower end thereof having a box shape projection therefrom, the top and bottom of said pro jection having a hole therein, a hollow pedestal having a thread on the outside and on the inside thereof, a thumb nut within said box through which said pedestal passes and by which said pedestal is adjusted, means on said projection and said pedestal to prevent said pedestal turningin the ad justment thereof by said thumb-nut, an adjusting ball pivotally mounted on the upper end of said pedestal, a cap for holding said ball thereon, means on said ball for supporting a tongue-spatula, said tonguespatula having a slot therein to fit said means, a thumb screw operating within said pedestal. the upper end thereof having means thereon for locking said ball in the desired position.

.Lz'AIl attachment for a mouth-speculum in combination with-a tongue-spatula and a comprising a support secured to said mouth-speculum, said support having a projection thereon, a thumb nut operating in said projection, a pedestal operated by said thumb nut, an adjustable ball pivotally secured to the top of said pedestal, means for securing said ball to said pedestal, and means for locking said ball in the desired position.

5. A mouth-speculum attachment in combination with a tongue-spatula and a mouthspeculum comprising a supporting member secured to saidmouth-speculum, a bolt adjustably mounted on said supporting 1nember, a ball pivotallysecured to said bolt and held thereon by a clamp screw cap, said ball for adjusting said tongue-spatula in any direction desired in operating on the throat.
