Description
Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNITE. STATES MARY L. SGUDDER, OF BELMAR, NEW JERSEY.
HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE.
Application filed September 15, 1925. Serial No. 56,421.
This invention relates to certain improvements 1n household furnlture.
It is the especial object of the invention to produce a cupboard or cabinet which is portable and which is shaped so that it will fit in the corner of a room, this cabinet being combined with a drop table leaf, which can, if desired, be swung out for use.
It is a further object of the invention to produce such an article of furniture which shall be strong and of few parts so that it can be inexpensively produced.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and, combinations which will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
Referring now to the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved article of furniture, showing it in position in the corner of a room;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale, the section being taken on line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a cross section, the section being taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the cabinet will be made of any suitable or desired dimensions for the purposes required.
In accordance with the invention, however, the cabinet will be portable, that is, so that it can be moved from place to place in the room in which it is used, and the cabinet will be of such configuration that it will fit snugly in an angular corner of the room.
In the structure illustrated, therefore, there is provided a frame comprising three uprights or standards 1, 2 and 3, arranged in a triangular fashion, as shown in Figure 0. These uprights are connected neartheir bottom by cross-braces 4, 5 and 6.
About central of their height the front supports 1 and 2 are united by a brace 7 to which is secured a table leaf 8. In the best construction this leaf is a folding table leaf and is, as shown, pivoted to the brace by hinges 9. This table leaf preferably has a rear straight edge and a semicircular outer edge, as indicated at 10 in Figure 1. lVhere this table leaf 8 is a pivoted table leaf, means are provided for supporting it when it is in extended position. While these means may be somewhat varied, in the particular construction shown there is provided a brace 11 pivoted on the support 7 below the table leaf, this brace at its outer end being secured to a leg 12. Above the brace 7 is provided a shelf 18, triangular in shape, secured to the supports and above the shelf the cabinet is provided on its two rear sides with sideboards 14 and 15 which extend to the top of the cabinet, these side boards being secured to the main supports 1, 2 and 8, before referred to. Near the upper end of the cabinet is provided a cupboard having a bottom 16, an intermediate shelf 17 and a top 18, the back of the cupboard being formed by the sideboards 14, 15, before referred to.
This cupboard is or may be provided with glass doors 19 hinged at 20, 21 to the supports 1, 8, before referred to.
If desired, for ease in moving the cabinet about, the supports 1, 2 and 3 and the leg 12 may be provided with castors 22.
It will be noted, as clearly disclosed in Figure 3, that the table leaf 8 and folding leg 12 when in folded position are dis posed between the two front vertical supports 1 and 3 and lie in a plane substantially flush with the outer surfaces of these supports.
With the construction shown and described a very compact and simple cabinet has been provided and one which combines the cupboard and the table, and which can be moved to any corner of the room desired.
While the specific structure shown and described provides a cabinet of attractive appearance, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An article of furniture comprising a portable frame work including vertical supports arranged in triangular relation with respect to each other, lower braces joining the supports, an upper brace connecting the front supports and arranged at the rear of the said front supports, a shelf secured between the supports and above the upper brace, a drop leaf table pivotally secured to the upper brace and adapted to lie flush with the shelf when in operative position, and to lie between and flush with the out- 5 secured to the other end of said 'afmf'sdid arm and movable leg being adepted-tqsup 7 port the table when the latter is in opera- 'tive position, said arm. and movable leg when theetable'is in inoperaltive'pdsition being disposed between the two front sup- 1 ports and rearwaxgdly. of said table.
