DELAY SWITCH.
Application filed June 5, 1925. Serial No. 35,191.
My present invention relates to improvements in retarded circuit closing devices and aims to provide a simple, economical and cilicient form of apparatus by which a circuit may be magnetically closed by a momental-y or initial electrical impulse and will be automatically opened at a predetermined time thereafter.
With these and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear, the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and'combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly del is a side elevation partly broken rent from the live wires 2 and 3, connected I to binding posts 2 and 2 the circuit through the magnet coils being closed by any suitable means such as operators push button 4 which is merely typical of any'suitable circuit closing means. Electromagnet 1 is carried by a suitable support 5 and has cooperating therewith a pivoted armature 6 articulated at 6* on bracket arms 7. Supported from or at the top of the magnet are a pair of switch members 8 and 9 which are insulated from the magnet and from each other and are connected by binding posts 8 and 9 with line. wires 3 and 3".
Armature 6 carries a switch member 10 which is designed, when the magnet is energized, to bridge the switch contacts 8 and 9 and complete the circuit and connect supply line 3 to line 3. Lines 3' and 2 may be extended to perform any desired service, such for example as lighting, and the closing of the circuit by switch 10 also supplies current to electric motor 11 through branch conductors 3 and 2", the electric motor operating after a suitable interval to open the switch 10 as hereinafter described. Armature 6 has an angular extension or tongue member 6* which is adapted to be engagedby the shoulder 12" of a latch or' trigger 19. fulerumed on fixed pivot 12 and having its upper end urged yieldingly towards the tongue member by a spring 13, whereby the switch is held in closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
The shaft of motor 11 carries fast thereon aworm 11 which meshes with a worm wheel 1 1 fast on shaft 15 journalled in bearing bracket 16 and in turn carries a worm 17 meshing with worm wheel 18 which latter is in the form of a disc rotatably mounted on hearing bracket or boss 19.
I preferably associate with the arm 6 a pull device 22 by means of which the switch may be closed by hand when desired.
It will be obvious that I do not limit myself to the particular reducing gearing shown as forming the driving connection between the motor and disc 18, and it will also be obvious that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
For example, it will be apparent that a mechanical motor of the clock train type could be substituted for the electric motor, such clock train driving a disc having a notch to engage a projecting end of the ar mature extension so that when the magnet was energized the projection of the armature extension would be lifted out of the notch in the disc which would allow the disc to start in rotation, the armature being held in circuit closing position until the notch was again in alignment with the projection when Lil the switch would be opened and the motor stopped.
I claim:
1. In apparatus of the class described, a normally open circuit including current supply conductors. a switch for opening and closing said circuit, a horizontally disposed electromagnet said switch comprising a movable switch element having a vertically disposed armature and an oii'set pivot. and an oppositely disposed laterally extending arm whereby the switch is automatically opened by gravity when the magnet is deenergize l, means for temporarily energizing the magnet. and electric motor operated means included in said circuit and constructed and adapted to be auton'iatically started by the closing of the switch, and means whereby the position of said laterally extending arm is controlled by said motor means.
2. In apparatus of the class described. a magnet support including a pair of switch elements, a magnet carried thereby, a pivoted armature carrying switch adapted to electrically connect said switch elements, means for temporarily energizing said magnet to operate said armature to close the switch, said armature being adapted to automatically open the switch when the magnet deenergized, detent means for holding said armature in switch closing position, an electric motor, a circuit including said motor and switch. and means whereby the motor operates said detentto allow the switch to open after said motor has operated for a predetermined period of time.
3. In apparatus of the class described. a magnet support including a pair ot switch elements, a magnet carried therelnr. a pivoted armature carrying switch adapted to elec tricallv connect said switch elements. means for temporarily energizing said magnet to operate said armature to close the switch, said armature being adapted to autonmtically open the switch when the magnet is deenergized, said armature having an abutment arm, a detent lever articulated on a fixed pivot and spring pressed into engagement with said arm, a rotary element carrying means for engaging said detent lever to move the same to releasing position, an electric motor, a circuit including said motor and switch, and driving connections between said motor and rotary element.

5. In apparatus of the class described, a magnet, a pair of fixed switch contacts adjacent the same, an armature pivotally mounted adjacent said magnet and normally urged away 'troin it. means carried by said armature for bridging said contacts, a pivoted detent lever having a pair of spaced shoulders cooperating with said arm. the one to hold the armature in switch closing position, a movable elenient 't'or tjlpfil'tltlllfl said detent lever, an electric motor for operating said lever. an electric circuit including said electr c motor and switch contacts. and means for ten'iporarily energizing said magnet.
