Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HIRAM TYLER, OF GENESEO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO PELL TEED, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,480, dated February 2, 1875; application filed June 18, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, H. TYLER, of Geneseo, in the countyT of Livingston and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Ooupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction ofthe clip and shaft-iron, whereby I am enabled to easily and quickly connect the shafts and pole to a vehicle, as will be set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my clip, and Figs. 2 and 3 end views of same.
In the figures, A represents the axle of the vehicle, upon which the clip is secured. B B represent the strap portions of the clips, which have their lower ends provided with screwthreads, and being formed as usual. The lower portion, C, of the clip extends up in front of the axle, and is provided with a journal-bearing for the shaft-iron, the upper portion ofthe bearin g being open, but the opening being less than the diameter of the arm or trunnion on the shaft-iron. D represents the shaft-iron, the rear end of which has a central enlargement, e, while on each side of said enlargement is formed a round arm, a a. The enlargement ts neatly between the two hooked portions of the clips, and prevents any lateral movement of the arms, which lie in the journal-bearings of the parts O O. These arms have a longitudinal groove in them, as seen at a' zr. A portion of the part O forms a hook, as seen, and the point of this hook enters the groove ma when the sh aft-iron has its outer end raised sufficiently, and thus the arm is enabled to pass through a smaller opening than that of its diameter, in order to drop into the journal-bearing.
Of course when the shaft-iron is lowered the arm cannot be movedout ofthe opening through which it entered.
There should either be two single clips or a double one, so aspto catch the two arms ofthe shaft-iron.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the two hooked portions O .O of the clips with the shaft-iron D, having central enlargement e and side arms, a a, with longitudinal grooves x w, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of June, 187 4.
HIRAM TYLER.
