Application filed January This invention has relation to new and useful improvements in muffler attachment for ulsters, over-coats, capes or other garments andhas for its primary object the provision of an attachmentof this character which may be readily secured upon or removed from the garment as desired and which is mounted thereon in such a manner that the muflier may be readily adjusted with the single thickness or double thick ness extending above the ulster collar and around the neck either when the garment collar is folded down or turned up, as desired.

The invention has for another object the provision of the muilierattachment of the character stated which is provided with means for detachably attaching the muiiler to the garment in such a manner as to retain the mutflerin position, near the edge of the ulster garment collar so that when in normal position, the muffler will not be seen when the garment is worn but may be readily brought to operative position as desired.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel means forsecuring the mufllerin proper position on the inner side of the ulster garment and along the collar. and lapel portion thereof so that the muffler will hang properly either when in use or when in inoperative position and hid.

lVith the foregoirg and other objects in View, aswill appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more spec fically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application and in which:

Referring more iii-detail to the drawings in'which similar reference characters designate corresponding, parts throughout the several views, it will be noted'that themuf fler 11 has a centrallongitudinal:attaching strip 12 secured by onelongitudinal edge to one side which, may be termed the inner side of the muffler 11. The attaching strip taching trip 12 is then folded ba'ck over the attached edge and ase'cond row of stitching 14: is extended through the folded-back portion of the attaching strip-.12 and through the mufller 11, the row of stitchingl l: being parallel with and close to the row' of stitching 13,. as shownclearlyin' Figured o f the drawings. A series of spaced butto'nholes 15 are provided in the attaching strip 12 so that the attaching strips 12 may be readily secured in position by the buttons 16, fasteners, snaps or other appropriate securing means arranged on the inner side of the garment 17 to which the mufller is to be attached and along the collar and lapel portions thereof. It is to be noted from Figure 2 that nine buttons are preferably employed, with three of them arranged practibuttons being slightly further from the rolled over edge of the lapel than the ad-' jacent button of the upper series and the second and third or lower buttons of each of these lapel series being brought in still fur-,

ther from the rolled edge of the lapel, as shown ,clearly in Figure 2. By arranging the buttons intthis manner, the muflier will be properly supported so that it will be out ofisight when not in use but when required for use may be readily raised on the attaching strip 12 with one or both sections or halves of the muflier extended above and over the rolled portions of the lapels and collar ofthe garment, as shown in Figure 1. As will be noted from Figures 1 to i inclusive, the manner of fasteningthe attaching stripz12 onto the muffler 11 will permit folding of one section or one half ofthe muffler onto the other while the two sections-or halves are in use or not in use, or extension of one section or one half of the muflier beyond the rolled edge of the collar and lapels of the ulster, while the other half or section of the muffler remains in its normal dependingor dropped position within the garment and covering'over the attaching strip 12.

gBy referring to Figure 8, it Will be seen clearly "how both sections or halves of the mufiier may be extended upwardly over the rolled edge of the collar and lapels of the garment while Figure 9 shows only one section or half of the mufiier turned up and the other in its'normal depending position com pletely covering the attaching strips 12. In Figure 10 the muffler is illustrated in its norz -i mal position where it is out ofuse andboth sections or halves depending inwardly of the rolled edge of the'collar and lapels.

.In the modified form of the invention shown in Figure 5, the longitudinal central portion ofthe muffler 11 is brought together to form a double rib 2 .on: one face of which is-secured the attaching strip 12 by two or more rows of stitching-21,'the attaching strip12 being extended longitudinally of the rib 20, as will be readilyunderstood'by referring to the drawings. It will also be apparent that only one longitudinal edge portion of the attaching strip 12 is secured to the rib 20. v

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figure 6, the mufiier 11 is illustrated in double thickness with the longitudinal central portion of one of the thicknesses bent upon itself and brought together to form the rib 20 of double thickness. This form also discloses the attaching strip 12 as vbeing formed of double thickness with the inner longitudinal edge bifurcated or separated and secured on opposite sides of the rib 20 by a suitable number of rows of stitching 22 extended through the rib 20 and through both portions'of the attaching strip 12 In the-modified form shown in Figure 7, the mufiier 11 is shown as being of single thickness with its longitudinal center brought together and extended from one side to form the rib 20 of double thickness. An attaching strip 12 similar to the attaching strip 12 is employed with the separated portions at the inner edge, engaged over the opposite sides of the rib 20 and secured thereto by rows of stitching 23.

VVhile the preferred forms of the invention have been disclosed and it is believed the complete construction and operation. of the muffler attachment for the garment may be readily understood from the foregoing paragraphs taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of the construction, combination and arrangement of the cooperating elements may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is The combination with a garment and -a muffler, of an attaching strip secured by one longitudinal edge to the longitudinal center of one face of said muffler and attaching members carried by the garment along the collar and lapel portions thereof, and on the inner face of the garment with the attaching members along the lapel portions gradually receding, as they proceed downwardly, from'the rolled edges of the lapel portions of the garment; the attaching strip being adapted for detachable I engagement with said attaching members,
