ihis invention appertains to door locks and the primary object ot the invention is the provision ot an improved means tor locking a door, whereby the possibility oi the door being broken open or unlocked by unauthorized persons is reduced to a minimum. y

Another prime object of the invention is the provision ot a novel lock tor an outside door ot a residence 0r the like embodying a pair ot locking bolts and novel means tor permitting the free operation ot' the locking bolts from the inside of the door, so that the door can be readily opened from the inside, the improved loch having no means carried by the outside ot the door tor permitting the operation ot the lock, the means tor permitting the operation ot the lock being hidden in one side ot the door trame.

A further prime object of the invention is the provision ot an improved door lock having the means for permitting the Opening ot the lock from the outside ot the door hidden in one side oi the door trame, the mentioned side of the door frame being prov'ided with a hinged cover plate normally held in a closed position by a key operated lock, the operating means for permitting the opening` ot' the door trom the outside thereot being also closed by a hinged panel, said panel normally hiding trom view a pair of manually operable switches, which are so disi'iosed as to he readily operated by unauthorized persons, when such persons endeavor to raise the hinged panel, thereby closing an alarm circuit.

A turther object ot the invention is the provision'ot an improved door loch having' the operating means for the loch for permitting the opening of the door trom the outside hidden in a suitable casing located at one side ot the door Jframe, the improved door lock embodying a pair ot locking bolts and an operating arm tor actuating the bolts, the operating arm extending through the door and into said casing, the operating means embodying a bolt for engaging said arm to cause the actuation ot the locking bolts.

lVith these and other objects in view, the

invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation ot parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reto-rence characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates a door and B a door trame therefor, The door A has incorporated therewith `the improved locking means C, while the `door trame l5 has incorporated in a portion therelim of .novel means D for facilitating the opening of the door from the outside thereof. While the door A can be of any preferred construction, the same preferably includes inner and outer rails and 11. and top .and bottoni rails 12 and 13. These rails are preferably covered by a suitable Qaneline` or the like 15. Arranged between the panels 15 are disposed horizontal supporting` bars 1G, 1l' and 1 8. As shown the supporting; bar 17 is located at the transverse center of the door and intermediate the bars 1G and 13.

The door frame B is constructed as near possible as ordinary door frames and in accordance with the invention, the portion of the door frame located at the inner or pivoted edge of the door A is provided with a built-in casing` 2O having` a hinged cover 21 which finishes oli the casingand presents to the view of the casual observer an ordinary door post. This cover 21 can be held closed against unauthorized opening` movement by a suitable key operated lock or the like 22.

The operating; means D of the lock C is located in the casing 20, as can be clearly seen by referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings.

The improved lock C of the door A comprises a pair of upper and lower sliding` locking; bolts 25 and 26, which extend through the outer end rail 11 of the door and these bolts are normally urged through the rail, by suitable contractile coil springs 2, which have their outer ends connected to the inner ends or" the bolts and their opposite ends to the rails 11. It is obvious that these springs normally tend to urge the bolts 25 and 26 outward of the door A in engagement with the keeper openings 28 formed in one side of the door frame B.

Tn order to hold the door in an unlocked position, so that free access may be had to the house with which the door is associated during the daytin'ie, a slide plate 29 is provided. This slide plate 29 is mounted on the free outer edge of the door A and is held in place against accidental displacement by suitable headed pins or screws 30, which are mounted in slide euideways 31 formed in the slideplate 29. The inner face of the slide plate 29 is provided with an enlarged rack bar 32, which is mounted in a recess portion of the rail 11. This rack bar 32 has meshing` therewith a sector pinion 33 keyed to a suitable door knob shank 3 the opposite ends of which extend through the opposite faces of the door and have keyed thereto operatingv door knobs 35 and 3G. The slide plate 29 adjacent to its opposite ends is provided with openings 3T for permitting the bolts 25 and 26 to engage their Lreepers 28 but it is obvious that when the slide plate 29 is operated by one of the door kno- bs 35 or 36, that the plate can be slid so as to move the openings 37 from out of alignment with the bolts and thus prevent the lockingmovement ot said bolts.

The bars 16 and 13 support operating' levers 10 and L11, which are mounted at points equidistznit'their ends upon suitable pins 42 carried by said supporting bars. The outer ends of these levers l0 and `t1 are pivotallv connected to the locking bolts 25 and 26, while the inner ends vthereof are pivoted as at 43 to the terminals of a connecting` bar 114. This connecting bar 4s'- has rigidly secured thereto in any preferred way the locking' arm 4.6 which is provided with a longfitu dinally extending slotted guideway 47 for the reception oi' the guide blocks 13 secured to the supportingl bar 17. One edge of? the operating arm 46 is provided with a rack bar i9 having meshing therewith a sector pinion 50 which is keyed to a suitable operating shaft 51. This operating shaft 51 protrudes through the inner face of the door A and has connected therewith an operating` door knob Thus it is obrious that on the turning of the door knob 52, the operating` arm i6 can be operated which will in turn manipulate the levers 40 and 41 and retract the bolts 25 and 26 thus permitting the opening;l movement of the door. As the door knob 52 is located on the inside of the door, it-is obvious that the door can be readily opened from the inside thereof.

The operating connectingrod 44 also has connected thereto the inwardly extending rigid operating,` bar 53, which extends through the inner rail 10 of the door for a purpose, which will be hereinafter more fully described.

rThe means D for operating the locking means C trom the exterior of the door comh prises a sliding` operating,` arm or bolt GO, which is provided with a longitudinally ei;` tending slotted guideway G1 for the reccption of the guide block 62. The upper edge of this bolt or operating` arm is provided with a rack face 63 having` meshing therewith a sector pinion G4. This sector pinion, @el is secured to a suitable operating` shaft 65, having mount-ed thereon a door knob 66. This door knob 66 can be provided with any preferred type of operating key 67 so as to permit the locking thereof to the shank or shaft and thus permit the manipulation 'of the operating arm or bolt GO. The forward end of this arm or bolt 60 extends through the inner walls of the casing 20 foi` engagen'ient with the inner edge of the operating bar 53 and it is obvious that when the operating bolt G0 is manipulated that the same will engage the operating bar and thus cause the retracting of the bolts 25 and 26 which will permit the opening of the door.

Arranged in the casing' 2O adjacent to the lower edge ot the panel is a pair of spaced partition plates Til and 75, and these partition plates carry the manually operated switches 76 and 7'?, which can be of any preferred type `r charact r. 'llicse switches 7G and T7 so disposed, that shoiild access be gained into the casing` by unauthorized persons by opening` the hinged cover 2l, When the said unauthorized persons try to open the hinged panel 70, the switches 76 and 77 will be operated and thiis close a circuit. The switch 77 preferably controls the alarm circuit, which can lead to any distant place so as to give aii ellective alarfi. 'lhe other switch. controls the lighting` ot an incandescentlainp 78 arranged in the casing 20 and its switch 76 is adapted to be closed, by authorized persons opening,` the door, so as to permit. siicli persons to readily see to yopen the door.

From the foregoing' description, it can be seen that l have provided an exceptionally simple and eliicient door loch, which ivill practically prevent unauthorized openingot doors or residences and the lilfe.
