CORNER BEACH FOR SHIPPING BGKES.
Application filed May 28, 1924.
This invention relates to an improved corner brace for returnable metal shipping loxes, being particularly designed for use on metal boxes employed for shipping bread and seeks, among other objects, to provide a brace which will not only serve to reinforce the box but also provide a hinge plate for mounting the lid of the box, and wherein the brace will be so constructed and connected with the box that accidental displacement of the brace to free the lid will be effectually avoided.
And a further object of the invention is to provide a brace which may be readily Stamped from sheet metal and which may be easily applied.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.
ln the drawings i Figure 1 is a perspective view showing shipping box equipped with my improved brace.
Figure 2 is a detail elevation of the brace, and
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view showing the mounting of the lid.
As previously indicated, the brace of the present invention is particularly designed for use in connection with returnable metal boxes for shipping bread and l have accordingly shown the device in conjunction with such a box. As illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the box comprises an ob- {lcng sheet metal body 10 and extending about the box body are bottom rails 11, center rails 12, and top rails 13 reinforcing the box body. The bottom rails are connected at their ends by corner braces 1-1 while the center rails are connected at their ends by corner braces 15. Closing the box body is a lid 16 which is formed to overlie the rails 13 at their upper edges.
The brace of the present invention is employed in conjunction with the top rails 13 and, as will be observed, l provide a pair of front braces 17 and a pair of rear braces 18 which connect the rails at the ends thereof. As shown in detail in Figure 2, the brace is stamped from a single piece of suitable resilient sheet metal bent medially to form angularly disposed wings 19 having reduced lower end portions 20. Near their upper ends the wings are formed with Serial No 716,452.
registering offsets 21 extending flush with each other and rising from said offsets are upstanding flanges indicated for convenience at 92 and 23.
As particularly brought out in Figure 1 of the drawings, the offsets 21 of thebraces are formed to lit under the rails 13 so that the wings 19 of said braces rest flat against the side and end walls of the box body while the flanges 22 and 23 rest flat against said rails 11p-standing therefrom for retaining the lid 16, and engaged through the wings and through said walls are spaced rivets or other suitable fastening devices 25 rigidly securing the braces in position. Also, nails or like fastenings 26 are driven through the flanges 22 and 23 of the braces into the rails for rigidly connecting said flanges to the rails. The braces will thus serve to reinforce and brace the box body at its upper end as well as connect and protect the reinforcing rails 13 of the box body at their meeting ends.
At their outer end portions, the flanges 23 of the pair of braces 18 are widened, as indicated at 27, and formed in the widened portions of said flanges are oblong openings 28. Straddling the rear margins of the lid 16 are hinge straps 29 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the lid and are looped through the openings 28 swingingly connecting the lid with said braces. Accordingly, in addition to their function of reinforcing the box body, the pair of braces 18 also serve to mount the lid and since said pair of braces is riveted directly to the metal walls of the box body, said braces cannot be easily torn olf or loosened to free the lid. A secure and permanent mounting for the lid is thus provided.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is p 1. lThe combination with a box, rails sec-ured to the outer sides thereof adjacent the top and a lid overlapping the rails and the top of the box, of corner braces comprising wings engaging adjacent walls, outwardly offset portions engaging the lower edges of the rails and upwardly disposed fianges engaging the outer sides of the rails and the edges of the lid, the rear braces having the rear flanges extending above the lid and formed with openings, and straps attached to the lid and hngedly engaging the openings in the flange extensions of the rear braces.
angulavly dspesed Wings widened 'f1-1.a @lie end, and having outer osets at the widened end, and having flanges projecting from the outer edges of the offsets in an opposite direction to the Wings, one of said flanges projecting beyond the companion Harige and 10 having an oblong opening formed therein.
