ANTITHEFT LOCK.

This invention relates to anti-theft locks for automobiles and more particularly to a device of this character for locking the engine or transmission of the automobile against movement.
in important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a locking bolt for engagement with the teeth of a gear of the transmission or engine which may be very cheaply and readily prodnced and which will provide an efiicient locking device in which there is no danger ot the locking part coming into engagement while the automobile is being operated.
A still further object 01" the invention is to produce a device of this character which may be very readily attached to the engine or transn'iission which is to be locked and in which the. construction is such that it is readily altered to be adapted to different engines and transmissions.
These and other objects we attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of our invention and wherein Figure l is a vertical sectional view through an anti-theft lock constructed in accordance with our invention;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral indicates a base plate, the upper surface 0t which is provided with an upstanding hollow post 11. This post has a bore 12 for the reception of a round locking part 13, the lower end of which is provided with a tooth. or teeth It tor co-action. with the teeth of a gear 15. Below the base plate 10 about the edges of the bore, the under surface of this base plate is formed with a depending circular flange 16.
This flange is adapted to be projected into an opening 17 formed in the cover plate 18 01" the gear 15. The gear may be the gear of a transmission or the usual starter gear applied to the fly wheel of the engine. In the former case, the plate 18 will prefer- Serial No. 27,087.
ably be the cover plate of the transmission while in the latter case, it will be the fly wheel cover. In either case, the base plate 10 is shaped to conform exactly to the plate 18 and is held in secured position thereon by means of blind screws 19.
At the upper end oil the post 11, the bore of the post is enlarged, as indicated at 20, thus producing an upwardly facing shoulder 21. The locking part 13 is provided with outstanding lugs 22 engaging in vertical. grooves formed in the side wall of the bore 12 so that this locking part is maintained in proper engaging position even when elevated and its rotation is prevented at all times. Seated upon the shoulder 21 a washer 24L through the opening of which is directed a post 25, the lower end of which is secured to the upper end of the locking part, as indicated at 26. At the upper end of this postis secured a lock barrel 2? slidably mounted in the enlarged bore 20. Between this look barrel and the washer, a spring 28 surrounds the post and constantly urges the barrel upwardly. In the wall of the bore 20 of the post, a pair of sockets 29 and 30 are formed for the interchangeable reception of the locking part 81 or. the lock 27. These bores are formed by drilling through the opposite wall of the post, the openings thus formed being plugged, as indicated at 32, 38. The plug 33 has a lug 341 engaging in a vertical slot 35 formed in the lock barrel so that this lOCI barrel is likewise maintained against rotation and accordingly the locking part thereof maintained at all times in alignment with the sockets 29 and 30. Furthermore, since both the locking part 13 and barrel 27 are held against rotation, the connection of the post with these elements may be threaded which is the cheapest possible conneotion.
The locking part of the barrel will be operated in the usual manner by a key inserted from the upper end of the lock barrel. Since the upper end of the post and the lock barrel will be exposed above the floor of the car, a swinging cap 36 is employed to cover the key slot when the key is not in position. It will be obvious that even after the key is operated to disengage the looking part 31 of the lock from the upper socket, it will be necessary to overcome the resistance 01: the spring 28 before this lock barrel and the locking part 13 can be forced downwardly to the locking position, thus assuring against any accidental engagement of the locking part 13.
It will be obvious that such a structure can be cheaply produced and is readily attached to the engine or transmission to which it is to be applied. It will furthermore be obvious that the construction hereinbetore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of our invention and we accordingly do not limit ourselves to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
