Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE BRYANT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES AND GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,245, dated February 2, 1875; a-pplic ttion filed November 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRYANT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Shoes and Gaiters for Ladies; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, of which Figure l is an elevation of my shoe partly broken away.
My invention consists mainly in attaching a dust and weather protector composed of a water-proof material to the quarters of the shoe which extend from the toe up to a point above the ankle, which guards the front from dust and water, and admits of the shoe being laced, as in the ordinary manner, as will here inafter more fully uppear.
In the drawings, A represents the tongue or protector, which is made, in this instance, of oiled silk, and covered upon both sides with ordinary silk and bound. Both sides of it are stitched to the quarters below the eyelets from a point near the toe of the shoe to a point a little above the ankle, suffieient space being left, so that the foot can be easily thrust in when the lacing is accomplished over the tongue, as in the ordinary way.
It will here be seen that the tongue acts as a pad, over which to draw the strings or lacing-cords, as well' as a complete protector of the stocking from dust and moisture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a shoe, the tongue A, consisting of the exterior parts of cloth and the intermediate water-proof material, and stitched to the quarters to a point above the ankle, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
GEO. BRYANT. [L. s] Witnesses:
G. W. M. SMITH, JOHN HAMILL.
