IMPROVEMENT in STEAM-VALVES.
Specitication Iorming part of Letters Patent No.' 159,198, dated January 26, 1875; application filed December 12, 1874, l
To allwhom yit may concern:
'Be it known that I, GEORGE MCNAUGH- TON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot' N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Valves 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear', and exact descriptionl thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto'- which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to vthe letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. The object of my invention is to overcome friction arising from steam-pressure, and consequent wear and loss of power, and also to construct Ia valve and cutlol' combined that shall be simple and durable, and have all the advantages which others haveiiremanrsimrirrt' "steam, and it consists in the construction and combination ot parts, as willbe hereinaftermore fully set forth, and pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section ot' my valve, and Fig. il is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the outside easing chest o r. cylinder, in which the valve revolves. B B- .ure the. heads of the outside casing. G is a collar or pipe, into which the feed-pipe is screwed. u u are the ports, admitting steam into the steam-cylinder for operating' the piston. l) is the body of thevalve, made hollow, and provided with heads E E', and held andA udpisted' in the cylinder by setsereWsc and nuls d.
lhe interior of' the valve is cylindrical in form, while the exterior is made conical or slightly tapering, the interior ot' the casing A being made to correspond with the'extericr surface ot' the valve.
b is the port through which the steam enters from the main pipe (l. In the opposite side of the valve is out a hole, b', Ot' the saine size the port I), to compensate or t0 give the sumesteam-pressure on both sides of the valve by o'iirring the same surface of metal to.
the steampressure. d is the port through n iin-.h the steam i :isses from the valve through .on the piston. In the opposite side ofthe valve are cut two holes, df d', the combined.x area of which is equal to that of the port d, for the saine purpose as the hole b is made.
i are exhaust-grooves. in the outside ot' the G, which moves the Valve.
The valve D, being hollow, as described, in the center, is charged to the same pressure as the boiler while moving from one point to the other, and when it comes into position to deliver Ithe steam into the cylinder, it gives the steam full power to expand as delivered.' lBe- -`mg conical-in foriirpitris thrown `smallend ot the casing and 'against the screw m by the exhauststeam pressing against .the large end E' andthe head of the casing.
By taking steaminside of the Valve, there must be an equal; pressure .on all sides, 'provided vthereis no'nore surface on the one side or in one'd-irectien tha-ii another. I aceon1.
plish this 4by cutting openings in the sides of the valve opposite -t c. the inlet and outlet ports, and equal in "area therewith, and thus perfectly balancing the valve.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
`1. The conical valve D, provided with steaminlet b, outlet-d, bala Qing-openings b d', and exhaust-grooves afg" *constructed and arranged substjntiall s' and'for th-efpurposes herein set forth. j 2. Theeon'ical valve D, with steam-inlet b, outlet d, openings b' d ,.-and grooves t' i, in combination with cylinder A B and screws and nuts c' d', all-as and'for'the purpose herein set forth. In testimony that Iclaim( the foregoing as my Own I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. MCNAUGHTON. Witnesses:
J As. B. BELL,
