Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THEODORE L. WISWELL, OF OLATHE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,009, dated January 19, 1875; applicatian filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE LEROY WIS- WELL, of Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvements in Harness; and I do hereby decla1e that the'following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figures of the drawings are representations of different parts of my harness.
My invention relates to improvements in harness-buckles; and it consists in a flat plate having loops to receive the straps and a tongue or stud to enter the strap, and the plate being also recessed on each side of the loops, in order to allow the straps to be sewed between the loops, to afford additional fastening, one end of the plate being provided with a wearing-hook to protect the strap when a ring or snap-hook is attached to it, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, F represents a buckle consisting of a flat plate provided with loops j j and a stud, k, which passes through a perforation in the strap or straps, and the wearing-hook lformed on one end to protect the strap from wear, and at the same time strengthening the fastening when a ring or snap-hook is applied to it. The letters 0 0 are recesses made on each side of the plate F, be-
tween the loops jj. By this construction the straps are held by the stud k and loops jj, and at the same time the recesses o 0 permit the straps to be sewed together between the loops, as shown in 0 o in Fig. 2 also, by this construction, all longitudinal motion of the straps held by the buckle is prevented by the shoulders 0 0 in contact with the sewing, the latter also preventing any lateral movement of the straps.
I am aware that a harness-buckle has heretofore been employed consisting of a base-plate having loops, stud, and a wearing-hook at its end; and I therefore lay no claim to such invention, which is objectionable, because of the liability of the straps playing longitudinally, which is obviated in my invention by recessing the plate on each side of it, and between the loops, and sewing the straps together along the recesses.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the plate F, provided with the recesses 0 o, shoulders 0 0 stud k, loops jj, and wearing-hook I, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE LEROY WVISWELL.
Witnesses:
JOHN T. LITTLE, H. OURTIs.
