DANIEL P. BOYLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRITING DEVICE.
Application filed April 9,
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong and efficient mechanical pencil construction, adapted partcularly for a combination fountain pen and pencil article.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a combination fountain pen and pencil embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on a larger scale, taken through the pencil part and the rear portion of the fountain pen barrel;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking at'right angles to Fig. 2, with the case of the pencil and the lead-chamber removed, no lead being shown in the lead-propeller;
Fig, 4 is a side elevation of the pencilcase and lead-chamber, removed, illustrating the manner of inspecting the leads in the lead-chamber; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line .5*5 of Fig. 2.
The numeral 2 designates a fountain pen barrel, whichcontains the ink bag 3 for supplying the pen 4. 5 is a cap formed to cover either the pen, as in full lines in Fig. 1, or the pencil, as indicated in dotted lines. The rear end of the barrel 2 is formed with an extension 6 containing a socket. In this socket is fixed a bushing 7, in which in turn is lined the rear end of a tube 8, which extends endwise from the barrel. The tube 8 constitutes a lead-propellerk guide, whichV may be fixed to the barrel in other specific ways, though the manner illustrated is preferred. This tube is provided with a longitudinal, guide slot 9, through which projects a kink 10 on a hooked wire 11, which carries a lead-tube 12 and centers it in the tube 8. The lead a is held by friction in the tube 12, so that the lead is both propelled and retracted. The kink or follower projection 10 cooperates with a spiral guide 13, which is fixed in the case 14 of the pencil. Rotation of the case causes the lead-propeller to travel along the spiral groove, in order to advance or retract the lead, according to the direction of turninfr.
he guide tube S is extended forward within the tapered forward portion 15 of the case, and is contracted at its forward end 16 to form an inner guide support for the lead behind and near the tip guide 17 of the case.
The rear end of the case 14 extends withyof the sleeve 1824. Serial No. 705,165.
in the socket V6, wherein it can be rotated and from which it can also be withdrawn. The oase is held to the barrel by a detachable connector sleeve 18. In the preferred construction the rear end of this sleeve is internally screw-threaded, in order to screw on and oif screw-threads 19 on the reduced end of the barrel extension 6. The forward end has an inturned flange 20, which has swivel engagement with a circular groove 21, affording shoulders both inside and outside ofthe fiange, preventing longitudinal separation between these parts in either direction. The sleeve 18 projects for a substantial distance over the case 14, and is spaced therefrom, except at the flange, so :is to form an annular lead-chainber22,which is closed at the forward end by the flange. Spacing projections 23, forced out from the case 14, keep the sleeve and the case in concentric relation when these parts are removed, as shown in Fig. 4. The rear end of the case projects beyond the rear end of the sleeve, so that the leads can be brought to view by placing the finger against the end of the case rear end down, as shown in Fig. 4.
The operation of the illustrated pencil mechanism, to which I do not necessarily limit myself, will be readily understood, In order to remove a stub of lead from the tube 12 of the lead-propeller. the entire lead- pro peller 11, 12 can be withdrawn through the slot. A fresh lead is inserted into the leadpropeller through the inner guide 16. Such yreloading is accomplished when the case 14 has been removed, exposing the internal parts,as seen in Fig. 3.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that there may be numerous changes in respect to details, reversals, additions, omissions and substitutions.
What I claim as new is:
1. In an article of the character described, a barrel having a. socket in its end, a leadpropeller guide having its rear end fixed in said socket, a lead-propeller guided in said guide, a rotatable case containing a second guide cooperating with the lead-propeller, one of said guides being a spiral, the rear end of said case being accommodated rotatably and removably in said socket. and a` detachable connector sleeve retaining the case to the barrel.
2. In an article of the character described,
and holding the pencil case with its llO a barrel, a slotted lead-propeller guide extending in xed relation from the end or the barrel, a lead-propeller guided in said guide, a removable and rotatable case enclosing said slotted lead-propeller guide and lead-propeller and containing a second guide cooperating with the propeller-guide7 one of Said guides being a spiral, and an external detachable connector sleeve retaining the rear end ot the case to the barrel.
3. ln an article of the character described, a barrel, a slotted lead-propeller guide er;- tending in ixed relation 'from the end of the barrel, a lead-propeller guided in said guide, a removable and rotatable ease enclosing said slotted lead-propeller guide and lead-propeller and containing a second guide cooperating Wit-h the propeller-guide7 one of said guides being aspiral, and an ei:- ternal connector Sleeve having means of detachable connection with the barrel and eX- tending over the rear end of the ease and cooperating With a. shoulder thereon.
4;. In an article of t ie character described, a barrel, a slotted lead-propeller guide e1;- tending in fixed relation from the end of the barrel, a lead-propeller guided in said guide7 a removable and rotatable case enclosing said slotted lead-propeller guide and lead-propeller and containing a second guide cooperating with the propeller-guide, one ot said guides being a spiral, and an external connector sleeve having means of detachable connection With the barrel and extending over the rear end of the case and having a vflange atI its Jforward end which engages the case in Such manner as to couple these parts against separation in either and both directions.
5. In an article of the character described, a barrel, a lead-propeller guide extending in fired relation from the end of the barrel, a lead-propeller guided in said guide, a removable and rotatable case containing a second guide cooperating 'with the propellergnideA` one oit said guides being a spiral, and a detachable connector sleeve retaining the case to the barrel, said sleeve being removable With the case and there being a leadchamber between them.
6. In an article of the character described, a barrel, a lead-propeller guide extending in fixed relation trom the end of the barrel7 a lead-propeller guided in said guide, a removable and rotatable case containing a second guide cooperating with the propellerguide, one ot said guides being a spiral, and a detachable connector sleeve retaining the case to the barrel, said sle ve having a swivel coupling with the case and forming hercaf'itli an annular lead-chamber.
