This invention relates to end gatesV especially designed for useoii wagons, trucks, and the like. Y,
One of the principal objects vof the invention is the provision of an end gate of this character which provides a grain-tight clo-v sure for the rear of the wagon box or the on which itis employed.
Another object resides in the provision of like an end gate of this character which maybe' made up of sections-to of thedesired height.
A further object is the provision of an end gate which maybe readily converted into a scoop board.
A still further object resides in the provision of an end gate wherein vthesections provide an end gate may be securely and firmly held in adjusted position by means of fastening devices arranged extei'iorly of the end gate so as not to lessen the capacity of the wagon box orto impair the smooth inside surface of the end gate when the same has been convertedinto a scoop board. has one end 16 pivotally mounted on the offset end of one `of thelinks A11 and the other end of the lockingbanis notched or bifu'rcated, as at- 17 ,i and -is designed to be engaged with the oiiset end'iof theotherlink 11 and to be held from displacement oil' such offset end by means ofthe head14 thereon. lVith this arrangement when the section 4 is in an upright position, as shown in Figving Vbar 15 et 2O is provided ure 1, and the links 11 have been moved into a horizontal position, wherein they extend transversely 0f the section 4 and in substantial parallelism with respect to each other, the locking bar 15 extends obliquely between the links 11 and the links 11 and the `lock-l may be conveniently held in such position by means of a locking ring 18 which is engaged with the links and with the locking bar. Brackets 2O are fixed to the section 4 and are provided with slots 21 through which the links 11 extend. One such brack at each end of the section 4 and when the section 4 is locked in upright Vposition as shown in Fig. 1, the inner end 22 of each slot 21 of each bracket 2') is engaged with a link 11 so as toY positively hold each endof the section 4 against outward swinging movementV about the pins 10.
The section 4 may be readily swung to the inclined position as shown in Figure 2 by disengaging the locking ring 18 from the linksll and the locking bar 15 and also by disengaging the yoked end 17 of the locking Vbar fromthe offset andheaded end of its link, whereupon the links 11 swing to the position shown in Figure 2 in which po ,sition the heads '14 of the links co-act withk the offset ends of the brackets 2O to support the section 4 in an inclined position.
The lower section 3 has angle plates 25 secured to its ends and at each end the lower section is formed with openings 26 which extend from the outer face of the section in through the body thereof and out through each end thereof. The angle plates 25 have openings 27 (see Figs. 3 and 4) vwhich regis- 4ter withV the openings 26. Pairs lof locking rods, designated at 28 and 29, are provided. The locking rods are of identical construction and each has an offset end 30 designed to sl'idably extend through the opening 26 provided therefor. As shown in the drawings the Vouter ends ofthe rods 28 and 29 are offset and extended through the openings 26y and the inner ends of the rods are pivotally connected to a bail or U-shaped operating lever 31 fulcrumed by means of a short shaft 32 on the bracket 33 secured to the central portion of the section 3. The rods 28 are oppositely disposed with respect to the rods 29 and are connected to the lever or bail 31 on the opposite side of the shaft 32 from that to which the rods 29 are connected. With this arrangement when the bailor operating lever 31 is swung to a position at right angles t0 the section 3 the rods 28 and 29 will be simultaneously drawn towards and past the center of' the section 3 so as to cause the offset ends 30 of the rods to be moved to a position within the openings 27. On the other hand when the ybail or operating lever 31 is swung up against the section 3 as shown in the draw ings, the rods 28 and 29 will be projectedV Y tially the lwhich co-act with slot-s 4sufliciently wide to permit the projecting ends of the rods to move in an arcuate path i or which may be arcuate if found desirable.
It is to be noted that the angle plates 25 play a part in pivotally mounting the sections 3 and 4 on the wagon in that one flange of Aeach angle plate has an extension 25a which curves under the'section 3 and which underlies the slots 9 and pins 10 to prevent the pins 10 from coming out of the slots especially when the sections 3 and 4 are used as a scoopV board.
In order to provide a grain-tight connection between the sections' and 4 and thel sides of the wagon, plates, designatedv generally at 37, are provided on the inner faces of the sides 2 and extend from the bottom 1 of the wagon up to the tops of the sides 2. Each plate 37Y includes an attaching portion 38'which is fastened flush up against the inner face of the side and an offset portion 39 which is designed to provide a sockelI 40. The flanges 8 of the standards 5 snugly fit the sockets 40 when the sections 3 and 4 of the end gate are in an upright position as shown in Figures 1 and 3. This arrange" ment provides for an absolute grain-tight fit between the end gate and the wagonbody In lieu of the'arrangement just described for Vproviding a grain-tight fit, the sides 2 of the wagon body mayT be reduced at their rear ends, as shown at 41, in Fig. 7, the reduced rear ends being formed by rcutting away the inner portion of the sides. Flat plates 42 may be used in the arrangement shown in Fig. V7 and may be fastened up against the inner face of `the side of the wagon to provide in conjunction with the reduced portions 41 sockets 43, designed to receive the flanges of the T-shaped standards 5 as before. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the plates 42 are located on the outsides of the wagon body and the rear ends ofthe sides are cut away on their outery portions, the arrangement of Figure 8 being substanreverse of that shown in Figure 7.
An auxiliary end ygate section 45 may be employed along with the sections 3 and4 and is supported on the T-shaped standards 5 by means of angle bars 46 having hooks 47 48 in the anges 7 of the standards 5. V
If the section 3 is used alone it is positioned within Ithe, wagon body just inside of the oiiset portions 39 of the plates 37 and this section 3 is secured in such position by projecting the offset ends SOof vthe rods 28 and 29 into openings 50 and 5l provided in the attaching portions 38 of the plates 37 and the sides 2 of the wagon respectively for the purpose of providing sockets to receive the ends of the rods, as shown in Figure 4f.
rIhe end gate described has an adaptability for many and various uses and is adapted to perform effectively in any of its many uses and applications. It can be readily converted into a scoop board. Moreover, when used as 'an end gate it provides an absolutely grain-tight it and it is readily released and secured in any of its adjustments. *Y
I claim:
l. In an end gate for use'with wagons having a bottom and sides, an upper section, standards carrying the upper section, means for pivotally mounting the standards at their lower ends on the sides of the wagon, adjustable means carried by the sides of the wagon and co-operable with the upper section for securing the upper section in upright position or for supporting the upper section in inclined position, a lower section, means for mounting the lower section on the standards and comprising pairs of rods mounted on the lower section, the lower section having openings receiving portions ofthe rods, the ends of the rods being designed to'be projected beyond the ends of the lower section, the standards having open ings receiving the projecting ends of the rods, and means for projecting and retracting the rods. V

In an end gate for use with wagons having a bottom and sides, an upper end gate section, standards mounted on the wagsides of Ithe wagon and with the upper 'section for maintaining it 1n adjusted position, and plates fixed to the having offset portions accommodating the flanges of the T- haped standards to provide a grain-tight it.
4. In an end plates at its ends and having openings eX- tending from its outer face out through its ends, pairs of rods having offset ends eX- tended through the openings, a bracket fixed to the section, a shaft mounted on the bracket, and a bail fulcrumed on the shaft and connected with said pairs of rods.
5. In an end gate for use with wagons having sides, end gate sections having standards at their ends provided with yrearwardly directed flanges Hush with the ends of the sections and designed to snugly lit the inner faces of the wagon sides' at the rear end of gate, a section having angle the Wagon, and plates having attaching portions iatly engaging and directly secured to the sides of the wagon and having oiiset portions co-acting with the sidesv of the wagon to define sockets in which said lianges are snugly fitted to provide a grain-tight tilt.
