CAP CLOSURE.
Application field March 3, 1922. Serial No. 540,748.
This invention relates to improvements in cap closures for containers such as auto mobile gasoline tanks and the like.
The objects of this-invention are to provide an improved rotatable closure for use `on automobile gasoline tanks, automobile radiators and the like; to provide such a cap closure with detent means for releasably maintaining the same in the position to` which it is turned; and to provide an improved vent means in the cap for preventing the formation of a vacuum upon drawing off the contents of the container.`
Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the l'ollowing description and claims when considered together with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Fig. l is an elevation of. my improved cap closure applied to the tubular throat of a container; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the cap closure; Fig. 4 is a plan View of the seat member to which 1s secured the cap closure; Fig. 5 shows the same member in elevation; Figs. 6 and 7 show the 'locking member in plan and elevation, respectively; and Fig. 8 is a partial View in section like Fig. 2 but sho-wing the initial application of the cap closure to the seat member.
The tubular throat 1, which may be an integral part of a container or a separate part suitably attached thereto, has secured thereto in any suitable manner, as for instance by soldering about the upper portion thereof the depending annular flange 2 of a collar or seat Inember which has an inwardly extending lange 8, a'depending flange 4 and an inwardly extending lange 5 surrounding the central aperture 6. The inwardly extending flange 5 is pro-vided with an annular series of openings 7 arranged in diametricals ly disposed pairs, the purpose of which will later appear, and the depending flange 2 is provided with theoutwardly extending sheared portions 8 for engagement with slots in the cap closure. vThe cap closure has the depending flange 9l provided with the inclined slots 10 for engagement with the sheared portions 8 so as to secure the cap by rotary engagement. The depending flange 9 has its bottom portions turned outwardly as indicated at 11 and the slots 10 terminate attheir lower ends at the bottom of the depending llange 9, or in other Words at a point corresponding substantially to the dividing line between the depending flange 9 and the outwardly extending flange 11. W ith this ,arrangement it is possible to readily engage the lower ends of the slots 10 with the sheared portions 8 without having the slots 10 extend to the free edge of the cap, thereby preservingthe strength of the marginal portion 11 which is not slotted. The cap closure has the inwardly extending annular flange 12 and the central spherical shaped depression 13 with the intermediate annular groove 14 to receive the sperical shaped member 1 5 the edge portion of which is crimped in the groove or channel 14 as indicated` at 16. Thel depending wall 14 forms with the wall or flange 9 an annular groove for the annular gasket 12a .of cork or other suitable material, this gasket seating upon ilange 3. Through the side wall of thel spherical shaped portion 13 at diametrically opposite points I have provided the arcuate slots 17 to receive the opposite side portions 19 of the looped resilient wire illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings as lying between the bends 18. These straight parallel side portions 19 are joined by curved end portions 21 which are bent downwardly as shown in Fig. 7 and are also bent intermediate-their ends into small rounded depending detents or tongues which engage the apertures 7. As the cap is screwed home, the tongues or detents 21 snap sucn cessively into the apertures 7 for releasable engagement therewith, each notch of the snapping adjustment therefore representing an additional step in the closing and gasket compressing operation and in the opening operation. The spherical portions 13 jand 15 together form an air chamber 22 which has communication with thel outside atmosphere through the vent 24 located centrally of the spherical portion 15 and with the inside of the container through the slots 17, which are located well up on the sides of the depending dome and baille entrance of liquid into chamber 22.
Having described my invention, Iclaim:
1. A closure structure, comprising a tubu lar body member, a`cap member, interengaging means between said members permitting relative. rotation therebetween for applying said cap member to and removing it from said tubular member, said cap member being provided with an air chamber, said chamber having avent opening to the atmosphere and having also a vent means providing communication between said chamber and the interior of said tubular body member when the cap member is applied thereto, and a member supported in said vent means and having releasable locking engagement with said tubular body member so as to secure said cap member on said tubular member in any position to which said cap member is turned.
2. A closure structure, comprising a tubular body member, a cap member thereforv provided with an air chamber, said chamber having a vent opening to the atmosphere and having also a vent means providing communication between said air chamber and the interior of said tubular body member when said cap member is applied to said tubular member, andl a member supported in said vent means and having releasable locking engagement with said tubular body member.
3. In combination, a tubular body member and a closure therefor, said closure comprising a cap adapted for cooperation with said tubular member and provided with an outer wall and an inner wall, said walls being separated so as to provide an air chamber therebetween, the outer wall having a vent opening to the atmosphere, said inner wall being also provided with a vent opening, and means supported in the vent opening of the inner wall and adapted for engagement with said tubular body member for releasably maintaining the cap assembled therewith.

In combination, a tubular body member and a closure therefor, said closure comprising a cap adapted for cooperation with said tubular member and provided with .an outer Wall and an inner wall, said walls being separated so as to provide an air chamber therebetween, the outer wall having a vent opening to the atmosphere, the inner wall also having a vent opening, and a resilient member supported in the vent opening of the inner wall and adapted for engagement with said tubular member for releasably maintaining the cap assembled therewith.
5. In combination, a tubular body member and a closure therefor, said closure comprising a cap adapted for cooperation with said tubular member and provided with a top wall and an inverted substantially dome shaped wall depending therefrom and thereby providing ank air chamber therebetween, said top Wall being provided with a vent opening to the atmosphere, said depending wall being also provided with a vent opening, and means supported in the vent opening of said depending wall and adapted for engagement with said tubular body member for releasably maintaining the cap assembled therewith.

In combinatiom-a tubular body 1nen1 ber and a closure therefor, said closure comprising a cap adapted for cooperation with said tubular member and Vprovided withan outer wall and an inner \vall,lsaid walls being separated so as to provide an air chamber therebetween, the outer wall having a vent opening to the atmosphere, said inner wall having a pair of substantially opposed vent openings, and means supported in the 'substantially opposed vent openings of said inner wall and adapted for egagement with said tubular member for releasabl maintaining the cap assembled therewit 7. In combination, a tubular body member and a closure therefor, said tubular member comprising a cylindrical portion provided with outwardly extending sheared parts and an inwardly extending annular portion provided with a series of circumferentially spaced recesses,and said closure comprising a cap having a skirt portion provided with slots for co-operation with the outwardly extending sheared parts of said Vtubular member upon relative rotary assembling movement of the cap and the tubular member, a top wall portion and an inner Wall portion spaced therefrom so as to provide an air chamber therebetween, said outer wall ortion having a vent opening to the atmosphere, said inner wall portion being provided with vent means, and a resilient member supported in the vent means of said inner wall portion and having a portion adapted for co-operation with the circumferentially spaced recesses of said tubular body member for releasablyvv maintaining the cap assembled with said tubular member.
8. In combination, a tubular body member and a closure therefor, said tubular member comprising a c lindrical portion provided with an outwar ly extending projection, an inwardly extending gasket engaging portion and a portion extending inwardly relative to said gasket engaging portion and being oii'set with respect thereto, said offset portion being provided with a series of circumferentiail spaced recesses, and said closure comprising a ca having a skirt portion provided with a s ot for cooperation with the projection of said tubular member upon relative rotary assembling movement of the cap and the tubular'mem-4 ber, gasket means for co-operationwith the gasket engaging portion of the tubular member, a top wall portion and an inner wall portion spaced therefrom so. as to provide an air chamber therebetween, said top wall portion being provided with a vent opening to th'e atmosphere, said inner wall portion being also provided with vent means,
and a resilient member supported in the vent means of said inner wall portion and having a portion adapted for (so-operation with the ercumferentially spaced recesses of the tubular member for releasably maintaining the cap assembled with said tubular member.
9. In combination, a tubular body meml ber and a closure therefor, said closure comprising a cap ada ted for co-operation with said tubular mem er and provided with an outer wall and an inner wall said walls being separated so as to providean air chamber therebetween, the outer wall having a vent opening to the atmosphere, said inner wall being also provided with a vent opening, and means adapted for engagement with said tubular .body member for releasably maintaining the cap assembled therewith, said means being carried by said inner wall and being associated with the vent opening thereorso as to provide a bafie for said vent opening.
