UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. Prune, oE HUMBOLDT, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALB-TIES.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. l 5S',7-33, dated` January 12` 1875.; application filed' l December 1.0, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:V
' Beit known that I, JeHN W. PHILP, o Humboldt, .in the county -of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton -Bale Ties 5 and I do hereby declare'that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof', which Willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make `and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingSand t0 the letters of reference marked hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.
- This invention relates to that class ot" cotton' and other bale ties, consisting of strands of Wire, which -are drawn around the bale and locked @t their Ends.; "and .it has.. for; its-*0b.` ject to furnish a more effective' and secure method of fastening Wire baleties than has been heretofore proposed. The invention consists of a tie formed. by a laterally-bent hook and a singleor double eye or coil upon the same strand, with thetie end of the wire dra-wn round the base of the coil or eye, to be interlocked with said hook, in combination withra short pindriven into the coil, so as to 4overlay` tl 1e bent sidcsot the tie end and clamp and-hold it .firmly round the coil and upon the strandfrom which the coil is formed, whereby the draft-strain of the bale is ciiectf ua-lly resisted and the tie endv heldV fast upon the back of the coil With a bearing that makes suoli hold or biting action as to pre Vent any possible slipping of theV tie end over .said coi-l. A
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 representsa bale with wire tie having a single coiled eye for the locking-pin. Fig. 2 represents a tie provided with a double ,coiledf eye for the. locking-pin; and Figs. 3` and 4,
enlarged views of the single-coiled eye-tie.
. In Wire ties great dic'ulty has been.' experienced in obtaining a secure and'permanent fastening of the ends of .the same after they have been passedl around the bale. In the use of an eye and hookfastening the draftstrain of the bale tends to produce the separation of. the ends of the tie,l and, furthermore, it is inconvenient to employ 4eyes and engaging-hooks, as they must necessarily .be arranged 'at a Stated or regular distance .from eachother.
I propose vto band or tie bales of cotton and other. materials by wire strands'l ,orpbands A, which are drawn around the bale and 'secured in la novel manner. On one end of thestrand or Wire band is formed a hook, B, bybendingV the wire first to the left, thento the right, an(
finally in au inwarddirection or toward the bale. At a suitable distance from the hook,
and on the same end portion of the tie or Wire strand, is formed a coil or eye, C, which may be either single or double, as shown in the' drawings.
portion of the'tie, are designed to secure the opposite tie end D, vthe same being drawn, by `any suitablevlneans, over or 'around the coil, on the 'outside thereof, at its-base, and then extended in. a direction paralleltothe end portion'having the hook. vand coil, so as to cause its free end tov pass through the hook,
`which serves to secure it iirmly in a locked position. -A short pin, E, is' driven in the coil, to prevent itfrou1 being drawn out of shape by thedraft-strain ot the bale, and 4to clamp the tie end hard upon thestrand on which the coil is made, and preventing, also, the bent wire from slipping on the coil, as it is located on the outside thereof l'and has its 'bearing against the back .of the'coil .atthe point'where it rises from 'the wire,- on which it is,I formed.
I claim- `A v'Ihe wire bale-tie having a hook, B, and a single or double coil, G, formed upon the salnej.. I
strand, in combination with the tie end, passed round the base of thescoil, and a clampingv lockingpiu, E, driven through said coilabove` the bent tie end, substantially as and for'the' lpnrposeset forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affixed my signature in presence The single coilis formed by bending or twisting the ,wire-strand once, and
the double coil by bending the Wire twice, the .outer twistanfthe vlire crossing .the innerl one, a. The hook and coil, formed lOrione
