Description
June l 1926.v
o. MILETTE WINDow Filed March 2l, 1924 Attorney Patented June 1, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
OCTAVE MILETTE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
.' The present invent-ion pertains to a novel` window of the type embodying a pair of slidable sashes, the principal object of the invention being the provision of a device of this character in which the sashes are hinged as well as slidable. f
This additional feature is particularly desirable in cleaning the windows as well as for ventilation purposes. In-.order to accomplish the purpose of the invention, the
window frame is formed with the` usual grooves for the sashes, and in a pair of these grooves are mounted slidable members. The sashes are hinged to these members, while the other side of the frame carries suitable devices kfor locking the free ends of the sashes in closed position when desired.
The invention is Vfully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which y Figure 1 is a front elevation 0f the window constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; y
Figure 3 is a similar section showing. the sashes swung on their hinges;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation of the` sash balancing device; and,
Figure 5 isa fragmentary perspective view of one of the hinges.
Reference will now be hadto these views by means of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The numeralA 1 indicates the ysash frame of usual con-struction which contains a lower sash 2 and an upper sash 3; These members are slidably mounted in suitable grooves 4 and 5 in one side of the frame and similar grooves 6 and 7 in the oppositek frame side. It will be observed that the grooves 6 and 7 are made by a retaining strip 8v attached to the frame side by means of a hinge 9.
The grooves 4'and 5 contain balancing weights 10 to which are attached cables 11, the latter passing over pulleys 12 mounted in the framein the usual manner. The remaining ends of the pulleys are attached to the sashes as shown in detail in Figure 4. The grooves are traversed by slidable strips 13 having their edges received inv Application led'March 21, 1924, Serial No. 700,922, and in Canada Janualy 21 1924.
WINDOW.
y one edge thereof with a pair of ears 15, as
shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 5. Flach sash carries a pair of leaves 16 which, when con-y nected to the corresponding ears, form hinges on which the sashes may be turned. Op- 30 posite the ears, the members 13 are formed with lugs 17 receivable in notches 17 cut in the sashes to insure a tight iit when ythe sashes are closed, as in Figure 2.
- The frame side opposite that to which the sashes are hinged carries a hinged bead 1S terminating at the points 19 and 20. The ends of the bead are engaged by strips 21 and 21 fixedly secured to the frame. lhvhen the sashes are in the position shown in Figure 1, the upper member 3 is retained by the strip 21, while the bead 18 is locked against the lower member 2 by means .of fastening devices 22. VJhen the sashes are to be swung outwardly on their hinges, the bead 18 is 7 released and the lower sash is raised to a position between the points 19 and 2O so that it can clear the fixed members 21 and 21. After this sash has been swung outwardly, the strip 8 may be moved out ofthe 80y path of the sash 3,-whereby the latter also may be swung outwardly.
lhile a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated yand described,
it is to be understood that various alterations 55 in the detailsof construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
I-Iaving thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect 90 by Letters Patent is A window comprising a frame having a pair of grooves in one side thereof and alined notches in the walls of said grooves, slidable strips mounted insaid grooves and projecting into said notches, an ear and a lug bent fromfthe oppositeedges of each strip, window sashes hinged to said ears, the hinged ends of said sashes having notches adapted to receive said lugs. In witness whereof I have hereunto my hand.
