Those skilled in the art will understand that each block 3 Will in general print a solid color but that is not in all cases necessary and that the block or blocks 5 will usually print an allover pattern like, for example spots, but that is not in all cases necessary. In the matter ot color there is of course great latitude because the number of blocks can be increased or diminished but evidently the color adaptation and utilization of the coating oit paint on the :tace of the carpet for the border greatly increases the color ei'ects that can be produced with a given number oi blocks, thus simplifying and reducing` the size or number el trames oi the printing machine and also facilitating and cheapening the printing operation. No border blocks are required and their cost is therefore laved and `very good eti'ec-ts can be produced by the employment of blocks Which are comparativeiy cheap to cut or make.

In additionto the blocks of which tivo, 3 and 5 are illustrated, but ot Which the number may beincreased, and in fact the block 5 may be omitted, there can be also provided line top print and masker blocks as will be readily understood, and the line print blocks may be adapted to print between and on top of the border and the rug center and in any other location that may be desired. For example there is shown at the left in F ig. 2 a pattern of spots printed by a block 3 on top of a solid center printed by other blocks 3 on top of the primary coating.

Obviously modilications may be made in details of procedure andin mere matters o1 form Without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited as to such matters or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended claims may require.

I claim;

l. The method ot' making block printed felt base two-tone rugs which consists in primarily coating the entire area of the carpet, block printing rug centers upon the carpet leaving the primarily coated carpet face exposed between and at the margins of the rug centers to provide rug borders, and cutting the rugs apart between the ters. n

2. The method et making block printed felt base rugs which consists in prin'iarily coating the entire area ot' the carpet, block printing rug centers upon a carpet leaving the carpet face exposed at all the margins ot' the rug` centers, block printing on the rug centers and on the exposed portions ol' the :tace ot' the carpet with additional (op print patterns, and cutting the rugs apart between the spaced rug centers.

3. The method ot' making block printed felt base rugs which consists in primarily coating the entire area of the carpet, printing the center parts of the carpet with a block of less effective length than the width of the carpet leaving an imprinted margin at each side and interrupting` such printing at intervals by putting the block out oi action to provide crosswise ranging stripes, then continuously printing the carpet with a. block of the same effective length as the Width of the carpet, and iinaliy cutting the carpet at the stripes to provide rugs or mats.

L The method ot making block printed felt base rugs which consists'in primarily coating the entire area ot the carpet, printing the center parts oit' the carpet with a block of less effective length than the width of the carpet, leaving an imprinted margin at each side and interrupting such printing at intervals by putting the block out of action to provide crossvvise ranging stripes, and finally cutting the carpet at the stripes to provide rugs or mats.

5. As an article of manufacture a tv.'otone block printed rug comprising a telt base, a primarily coating or lilm co-ezitensive with the face of the base and consisting of a paint composition appropriate tor rug borders, and a rug center or center ground formed by paint deposited on the surface of the central portion ot said primary coating or film, the marginal portion ot primary coating or film being exposed to constitute a border or border ground around all four edges of the rug.
