VELOCIPEDE.
This invention relates to toy velocipedes suitable for children, and has for its object the provision of a pedal operated device which includes certain outstanding features of an aeroplane and will therefore appeal very much to children and be a source of amusement, whilst at the same time essentially useful as a means of locomotion.
It is also an object of the said invention to provide such a device wherein one of the features simulating an aeroplane is a propeller, and wherein the propeller is given arotary motion by the operation of the pedals effecting the propulsion of the velocipede, a still further object being to incorporate in such a velocipede a divided shaft in which both parts are driven by the same set of pedals, and in which one of said shafts transmits power to the wheels of the velocipede and the other to a propeller situated at the forward end of said velocipede.
Still further objects subsidiary to or resulting from the aforesaid objects, or from the construction or operation of the invention as it may be carried into effect, will become apparent as the said invention is hereinafter further disclosed.
In carrying said invention into effect, l may provide a vehicle body shaped somewhat in the form of the fuselage of an aeroplane and provided with rear wheels and a front wheel, which front wheel is mounted in a suitable steering device; andL a two-part shaft, one of which parts is geared through a rear axle to the rear wheels and the other extends forwardly beyond the front of the velocipede body and is provided with a propeller at its forward end.
Intermediate of the adjacent ends of the two parts of the said shaft is arranged a bevel wheel geared to both of said shaft parts and actuated by pedals mounted on the ends of a spindle passing through the said bevel wheel.
All of which is more particularly dc scribed and ascertained hereinafter, by way of example, having reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a velocipede embodying the said invention; and

1 indicates the body of the vehicle, which may be made of wood and is shaped to generally represent the fuselage of an aeroplane, 2 being a depressed portion in the center thereof, forming a seat for the rider, and 3 are supports extending upwardly from the said body for a plane or canopy a adapted to extend over the head of the rider.
rlloavard the rear end of the said body or fuselage, and beneath the same, is a bracket 5 in which the axle 6 of a pair of rear wheels 7 is journaled, this axle being provided with a bevel pinion 8, and in front of the seat portion 2 of the fuselage, is mounted a steering column 9, the lower forked end 10 of which carries the front wheel 11.
Beneath the said fuselage and extending longitudinally thereof, is a two-part shaft 12 and 13, the rear part of which .is carried by brackets 111 and 15, and the front part of which is carried by a bearing 16 on the front of the said fuselage and by a bracket 1T beneath the said fuselage, the adjacentends of the said parts 12 and 13 of the said shaft being provided with bevel pinions 18 and 19 respectively. The rear end of the said shaft part 12 is also provided with a bevel gear 2O which meshes with the bevel pinion 8 of the rear axle 6.
21 are pedals carried by cranks 22 mounted on the end of a spindle 23 which is supported by a bracket 24, and mounted on this spindle is a spur wheel 25 which meshes with both the bevel pinion 18 and the bevel pinion 19, whereby actuation of the said pedals will effect rotation'of both of the shaft parts 12 and 13 and will consequently effect the mechanical rotation of a propeller 26 mounted on the forward end of the shaft part 13 simultaneously with the propulsion of the velocipede.
rlhe result is extremely pleasing to the youthful mind, and the device is also attractive when in use, due to the simulation of an aeroplane in flight, and the invention may be developed within the scope of the following claims without departing from the essential features of the said invention, so that it is desired that the specification and drawing be read as being merely illustrative and not in a limiting sense, except as necessitated by the prior art.
1. A veloeipede for children, comprising a wheeled vehicle having a body shaped to simulate the fuselage of an aeroplane and a two-part shaft extending thereunder, pedal mechanism operating` both parts of said shaft, means gearing one of said parts to the rear wheels of the Veloeipede, and a propeller at the forward end of the other of said parts.
2. A Veloeipede according to claim l, wherein the forward part of said shaft is journaled in a bearing in the forward end of the said body with the propeller exterior to the said journal.
8. A velocipede according to claim l, wherein the adjacent ends of the two parts of the said shaft are provided with bevel pinions and the pedal mechanism with a bevel gear engaging both of said pinions for simultaneous operation,
