MECHANICAL TOY.
Application led October 28, 1925. Serial No. 65,326.
This invention relates to a mechanical toy and important objects thereof are t0 p rovide a mechanical toy. which is characteristic of a horse running race and which embodies interchangeable figurative horses mounted for operative movement iii'iitable 'of running horses.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a toy of the type stated, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement,-. strong, durable and efficient in its use, entertaining, compact, attractive in appearance and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. U
With the foregoing and other ob]e cts in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention, resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the Scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a top plan view o f amechanical toy in accordance with this invention, with a portion of the cover plat/e broken awa Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device with a side wall removed therefrom and partly in section.
Referrin in detail to the drawing 1 denotes a bo y ortion consisting of a bottom 2, the end wa s 3 and the side walls 4 connected together to provide a rectangular casing. The body portion 1 is provided with a cover plate 5 which is secured t o the former by means of the screws 6, or in any other suitable manner.
The top face of the cover plate 5 constitutes a straightaway race track, and the simulation of the latter is augmented by the provision of an ornamental, vertically disposed fence structure 7, which extends along the marginal edges of the top face of the cover plate 5.
The cover plate 5 is formed with a plurality of elongated slots 8 which extend longitudinally relatively to the cover plate 5. The slots 8 are arranged into three rows each of which consists of a series of three slots 8. flhe slots 8 of each of the rows are transversely aligned and extend parallel relatively to each other, and the slots 8 of one row are longitudinally aligned with-respect to the corresponding slots of the other rows.
A rectangular-ly shaped, transversely disposed cai'rier 9 is associated With each row of slots 8. Each of the carriers 9 is provided at its rear end With a pair of projections 9 which are pivotally mounted in verltically disposed grooves 10, formed in the side Walls 4 of the casing 1. Three transversely aligned supports 11 are fixed to the top of each of the carriers 9, adjacent to the forward ends of the latter. 'lhe upper end of each of the supports 11 extends into a respective slot 8 and is provided with a longitudinally extending groove l2 formed on itstop face, a iigure 13, representative of a running horse with jockey, is detachably secured .to the top of each of the supports 11 by having its lower end forced into the groove 12.
Each of the carriers 9 is associated with an actuating bar 14 extendingtransversely in the body portion 1 and disposed beneath and in engagement with the forward' poi'- tion of respective carriers 9. Each of the actuating bars 14 is provided with a pair of trunnions 15 which are journaled for rotation in respective side walls 4, of the body portion 1.
A double groove pulley 16 is iixed on one trunnion 15, of the intermediate disposed actuating bar. rllhis triinnion is also provided with a squared extension 17, which extends through the associatedside wall and is adapted for the reception of a crank (not shown) or other mechanical medium for operating the device. A single groove pulley 18 is fixed to a trunnion 15 of the rearwardly and forwardly disposed `actuating' bars 14.
Belts 19 connect the double groove pulley 16 with the intermediate actuating bar, with the pulleys 18 of respective rearwardly and forwardly disposed actuating bars. The operation of the double groove pulley 16 will simultaneously impart a rotary movement to the other pulleys 18' and to the actuating bars associated with the latter.
Each of the actuating bars 14 is substantially rectangularly shaped in transverse cross section and is considerably greater in width than thickness. Owing to this variation in width of the bars 14 with respect to their thickness, the rota-tion of the bars 14 will alternately elevate'and lower the pivotall connected carriers 9, thereby imparting a. bobbing movement, typical to running horses, to the figures 13.
It will be noted that the gures 13 may be readily detached from their supports 11, whereby the device may be reduced to a niore compact form to facilitate transportation and storage.
What I claim is:
In combination, a toy comprising a rectangular casing, a`cover plate representing a race track secured to the top o f said'casin said cover plate formed with a` plura ity of elongated slots, carriers having their rear ends pivotally connected inv said casing, supports fixedly mounted on said carriers and having their upper ends extending into said slots, the top of each of said supports formed with a groove, a. iigurative object carried by each of said supports and detachably connected in said grooves, actuating bars rotatably mounted 1n said casing and en aging the forward end of said carriers, sai actuating bars being rectangular-ly shaped in transverse cross section and of a greater width than thickness for alternately elevating and lowering the said carriers during the rotation thereof, and means associated with said actuating bars to cause the simultaneous operation thereof, substantially asdescribed and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
