MASSAGING DEVICE.

This invention relates to massaging devices, and more particularly to facial mas-o saging devices of an improved character, combining suction creating means with additional means for creating circulation through brisk rubbing applied to such parts of the surface as may be desired.
The present invention is an improved combination device of a character similar to that shown and described in my co-pending application filed February 3rd, 1925, Serial No. 6,632, but differing in that the present device is provided with an additional smaller cup carried at the end opposite that bearing the suction cup proper, as an added feature for applying cold-cream, or other prepara- 'tions, to face, or other body surfaces, preliminary to massaging with the cup proper, or the use of the massaging tips within this cup, which are exposed for use by a simple folding back of the cup upon the lower surface of the bulbous part. 7
An additional feature of the present invention is the method of securing the suc- 5 tion cup proper to the bulbous body portion,
this being readily accomplished by providing the suction cup neck with a single-turn thread formed exteriorly and adapted to engage the beaded opening formed in the bulb, this opening being of somewhat smaller diameter than that of. the thread carried exteriorly the neck,,so, that when these parts are assembled, the fit is sufliciently tight to prevent the passage of air" through their juncture. Another feature is the provision of a bulbous body of substantially prolate spheroidal form having a thickened wall at its open end, which gradually thins, or decreases in thickness, as it approaches the opposite end, upon which the smaller cup is formed as an integral part, the whole permitting a diaphragmic action when shght pressure is applied to this smaller cup end and operating for the creation of vacuum within the massaging cup proper when massaging.
An object of the invention isthe provision ofia massaging device of the character described, that combines a positive main suc- 9 tion-cup with that of a body of prolate spheroidal form'having a thin resilient Wallopposite the suction cup, with this portion provided with a smaller cup adapted for ltllip application of creams, lotions, and the A further object is the provision of a device of this character, which is provided with a threaded connection between thesuction-cup neck and the body, proper adapted to draw tightly together these members when assembl An additional object is the provision of a suction-cup bearing a centrally disposed member provided, internally the suctioncup, with a plurality of massaging tips, so arranged as to be used in combination with the suction-cup, or independently thereof by folding back this cup upon the body portion, leaving freely exposed these tips.

Figure 3 is a logitudinal medial sectional view, showing the gradually decreasing thickness of wall, the method of assemblage of suction-cup and body portion, and the method of forming the massaging tips within the cup and manner of attachment to the neck thereof-the dot and dash lines indicating the reversed position of the suctioncup when it is desired to expose these tips for use independently of the cup, the view being taken on line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a detail of the suction-cup, showing the exteriorly threaded neck portion.
Referring to the, drawings in detail, the device consists of a prolatespheroidal body portion 1, molded of soft rubber and provided at its end 2 with a comparatively thick wall 3, which gradually decreases in thickness to the opposite'end 4 and ending in a membranous section 5 bearing an integrally formed miniature cup-member 6.
The end 2 of the body portion is provided with a beaded opening 7 of sufficient diameter to fit tightly over theannular channel 8 formed exteriorly of the neck 9 of the suction-cup 10, said neck 9 being provided with a one-turn thread 11 formed exteriorly thereof and positioned adjacent the channel 8, so that, when the cup-neck is inserted in the opening 7 of the body portion and given a half-turn, the thread 11 will enter said opening and pass the bead Within the body portion to the position shown in Figure 3, with the bead resting in the channel 8 and abutting tightly against the convex surface of the suction-cup 10.
The neck 9 is provided with an outwardly flared integral section, or extension, 12 concentrically positioned within the cup 10 and provided with a plurality of massaging tips, or fingers, 13 adapted to extend to, or near, the outer lip, or edge, 14 of the cup. and so arranged as not to interfere with the action of the cup when used in conjunction therewith.
An opening 15 is formed in the neck 9, serving as an air-passage, or communicating means, between the suction-cup and the body portion interiorly, so that compression exerted upon the body portion expels air therefrom, and, upon release, with the cup contacting with a surface, creates a suction pull upon the surrounding surface.
When it is desired to use the massaging tips independently of the cup, this last is reversed upon itself, or folded back upon the body portion, when these tips are freely exposed for action as massaging elements.
The smaller cup is intended more particularly for use in applying creams and lotions to the skin preliminary to its massaging with the suction-cup and tips, or as a finger-rest in the manipulation of the body portion in the creation of vacuum in massaging with the larger cup- It is obvious that, by providing the body portion with a comparatively thick wall at that extremity where strength is most needed and a thinner one where flexibility and resiliency is a prime requisite, I have accomplished a double purpose, in that a strong and rigid juncture of the two elements has been secured, while, at the same time, providing a readily and easily operable means for creating a vacuum within the interior of the massaging-cup at a minimum expenditure of effort during the massaging process.
In recapitulation, the device comprises an air-bulb of substantially prolate spheroidal form having walls decreasing in thickness from its one extremity to the other, a neck provided at its exterior end with massaging tips and having an air-vent therethrough, a massaging-cup borne by said neck and encircling said massaging tips, means for removably securing said neck to said airbulb, and a medicament-cup borne by the opposite extremity of said air-bulb and forming an integral part thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. In a massaging device, an air-bulb of substantially prolate spheroidal form having a wall decreasing in thickness from its one extremity to the other and provided at one of said extremities with a threaded o r ening, a neck bearing massaging-tips am an air-vent and provided with a massaging-cup borne by said neck and encircling said massaging-tips, the said neck being externally threaded, adapted to be received by said threaded opening and snugly embraced thereby to form a means of communication between said airbulb and said massagingcup. n 2. In a massaging device, an air-bulb of substantially prol ate spheroidal form having a wall decreasing in thickness from its one extremity to the other and provided at one of said extremities with an opening, a neck bearing massaging-tips and provided, with an air-vent, means for removably securing said neck within said opening, and a massaging-cup borne by and forming an integral part of said neck and adapted to encircle said massaging-tips.
