To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEFAN JANuovrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, 'n the State of Missouri, have in- 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cold Manges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in mangles, and consists inthe novel features of construction more fully set forth in the speciiication and pointed out in the claim. Y
The object of the invention is to provide a mangle that will ellictively press flat laundered pieces without the application of heat. pressure or weight to one of the mangle rollers, and means is provided for adjusting the weight applied. A further object is to construct the mangle in the form of a cabinet that will present a pleasing appearance, and take up butlittle space. Further advantages will be better apparent from a detailed description of the inventionin connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mangle as it is closed when not in use; Fig. 2 is a vertical middle section through the mangle, as indicated by the line 2-2 on Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, with the front raised and the mangle in operative condition; Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the rollers with the work being mangled thereby; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, C represents a cabinet having side walls 1, 1 and a front wall comprising a bottom panel 2 and a hinged panel 3 thereabove which may be Vsupported in a horizontal plane by braces 4, 4 mounted on the inside of side walls 1, 1. A platform 5 is secured between the side walls 1, 1 and the panel 3 is hinged to the front edge of this platform so that when panel 3 is elevated to a horizontal pla-ne it will form a table extension forthe platform 5. When the mangle is not in use the panel 3 is down and forms the front'wall of the cabinet, and a cover 6 is placed over the top thereof to close the cabinet. On the bottom of each guide a cleat 9 isfastened so that the cleats on the opposite slides form a support for a box or crate l()v which serves as a holder for any desired ynumber of weights 11. On the outside surface of walls 1, 1 opposite the slide and extending from the top of said walls to a short distance below the platform 5 are bearing plates 12, 12 which are provided with sockets 13, 13 to serve as bearings for the gudgeons 14, 14 of a roller 15 which is disposed to operate through a longitudinal opening 16 in the platform 5. It will be observed that the top of the roller is in the same plane with lthe upper surface of platform 5. A second roller 17 is disposed above roller 15 the gudgeons 18, 18 of which are mounted in slots 19, 19 respectively inr plates 12, 12. rThe gudgeen 18 is longer than 18 and passes through slot 19', which is open, so that a crank 2O may'be placed on the polygonal extremity 18 of the gudgeon. The slots 19, 19 extend upwardly so that the roller 17 vmay be free to move upwardly away from the fixed roller 15. A third roller 21 is disposed above roller 17, and is provided with gudgeons 22, 22, mounted in bushings 23, 23 set into the slides 8, 8, said slides be- 3 ing provided with slots 24, 24 extending from opposite the bottom of roller 21 to below roller 15, through which slots the gudgeons of rollers 15; and 17 pass. The object of slots 24 is to allow Vthe slides 8, 8 to move upwardly to impart an upward movement of roller 21 relative to rollers 15 and 17. A sheet of canvas 25, or other suitable fabric, is secured to the roller 17 across its entire length.
The operation of myimproved mangle is as follows:
Having removed the cover 6 and raised the panel 3 to form a table as shown in Fig. 3the roller 17 is rotated, by means of the crank 20, in' a direction opposite to that shown by the arrow in Fig. 3 to unwind the sheet 25 from said roller.V The piece P that is to be mangled is now placed on this sheet on the table 3 and fed under the roller 17l by rotating said roller in the direction of the arrow. As the piece is wrapped in the folds of the sheet 25 onto roller 17 it is subjected to the pressure of roller 21 from above, said roller being urged downwardly by the weights 11 within the crate 10. The roller 175 being xed serves as an abutment aga-inst which the roller 21 exerts its force. As the folds of the piece and the sheet 25 increase the combined diameter of roller 17 together with the folds thereon will force both rollers 17 and 21 upwardly. The slots 19, 19 permit the roller 17 to move upwardly, and the roller 21 moves upwardly with the slides 8, S in Which it is mounted.
t is thus apparent that as the piece undergoing treatment is subjected to the desired pressure while being rolled out flat, it is nicely smoothed without the aid of heat. Of course, only flat articles such as sheets, towels, etc. can be advantageously treated in a device of this character', but they may be effectively handled in the device just described very economically since no heat is required.
Having described my invention,` I claim:
A inangle comprising a cabinet having a front and sidewalls, a platform disposed between said side walls, bearing plates fixed in said side walls a roller mounted for rotation in said bearing plates and through an openinO' in said platform, a second roller mounted for rotation above the first roller and vertically movable in slots in the bearing plates, a pair of guides on each of said side walls, a slide freely movable between each of said pairs of guides, a third roller mounted for rotation in said slides above the second roller, a weight holder positioned at the lower ends of said slides, and means for rotating the intermediate roller.
