IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-=THREADING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 158,314, dated December 29, 1874; application filed August 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. ROBERTS, of Gohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Cutting Screws on Tubing, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish ready and convenient means for cutting screws on gas-pipes, tubing of all kinds, rods, bolts, and similar articles; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a vertical section of Fig. 2 on the line 00 m. Fi 2 is a section of Fig. 1, taken on the line 3/ 2/- Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is a bed-plate, which is fastened to a bench. B is the vise-plate, which is made ad justable on the bed A. O and D are the jaws of the vise. The lower jaw is stationary, and made in two parts, connected together by the bolt E. (See Fig. l.) The upper jaw D is fastened to the sliding block F, which is attached to the vise-screw G. This jaw D works down between the two parts of the jaw 0. Each of the jaws has a V-shaped opening,
"the sides of the V being serrated so as to effectually hold the tube within the angular openings, and keep it from turning. The vise-screw G works through the cross-bar H of the vise-plate. On each side of the viseplate is a socket, I. J is an arm or brace, which is provided with two pins or bars, K. These bars enter the sockets I, and support the arm in a horizontal position, as seen in Fig.1. L is the pinion. M is the die-wheel. N is the feed-screw. O are the dies, which are made fast in the face of the wheel M. The hub P of the die-wheel works onto the stationary screw-block P, as the wheel is turned, and
draws the dies 0 onto the tube. R is the tube. The die-wheel M is a cog-wheel, with i or water. This pinion is made long to allow the die-wheel to move in and out as it carries the dies on and off the tube. The tube is held stationary in the jaws of the vise, and the feed-block N is held stationary on the tube by the set-screw U. The arm J (which carries the pinion L) is raised and lowered, as may be desired and is held in position by the set-screws V V. This adjustment adapts the machine to different-sized tubes.
This machine is portable, and is used at great advantage by gas-fitters in fitting pipe to d welliu gs and buildings where the ordinary pipe has to be cut frequently to suit the various apartments. The machine may also be used for cutting bolts or screw-rods of various sizes with equal facility, and, with slight modifications, for cutting left-hand screw-threads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, as herein described and shown, of the cutter-head M, having an internally screw-threaded hub, the hollow nut N for co-operating with said screw-hub, and attachable to the rod to be cut, the jaws D O for clamping the rod, and the long pinion L, for the purpose set forth.
2. The vise-frame A, having sockets I, in combination with the vertically-adjustable arm or pin-ion support J, having pins K, as and for the purpose specified.
