To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ()nUs Cnoiinn HINsON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cramerton, county of Gaston, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Cutters and evolrers for Automatic Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a thread cutting and revoking device for looms provided with an automatic weft replenishing means and, more particularl to a device, controlled by the feeler mechanism of theweft replenishing means, for severing the weft thread extending from the fabric to the bobbin about to be ejected and for holding the severed end until the thread is cut by a temple cutter adjacent the selvage of the fabric.
In the operation of a loom having an automatic weft thread replenishing mechanism, a feeler mechanism is provided to determine when the thread in a shuttle is becoming exhausted or nearly exhausted and to thereupon eject the nearly empty bobbin from the shuttle and replace it with a full bobbin. To avoid drawing the thread, which extends from the cloth to the ejected bobbin back into the cloth and thus form an imperfection therein, the thread should be severed between the selvage of the cloth and the bobbin and the severed end held until the thread may be out closely adjacent the selvage by a temple cutter. Thread severing and holding mechanisms heretofore provided for performing this function have been diliicult to mount and adjust on the loom and have frequently been uncertain and unreliable in action, failing at times to pro 'ierly sever and hold the thread. Moreover. the thread severing and holding devices heretofore provided have been of a complicated structure and have been constructed of a large number of parts.
An object of my present invention is to provide a thread severing and holding device which will unfailingly sever and hold the weft thread extending from the selvage upon the removal of an empty bobbin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a thread severing device of the above indicated type which may be readily mounted on the i'eeler mechanism by which it is controlled and adjusted in relation to the portion'of a 'lay serving to actuate it.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thread severing device and 'revoker of simple construction and'of a minimum of parts.
A still further 'object of the invention is to provide a severing device which will take the thread from any position from the race plate to the level of the "top of the shuttle and will guide the thread therefrom to a position to be severed and held.

In my present invention, a cutter plate is mounted on a horizontal lever arm controlled by the feeler mechanism, which lowers the plate into active position to be operated by a lay when a bobbin is to be ejected and replaced. The cutter plate is provided with a downwardly and forwardly inclined edge by which the tl read to be severed may be guided to a cutting edge extending forwardly at the lower end of guiding edge and against which the lay also acts to lift the device after the cutting operation. When a bobbin is to be ejected, the cutter plate is lowered by the feeler mechanism during the time when the lay is moving backwards and, when the shuttle has been driven into its shuttle box and the lay comes forward, the thread extending from the selvage to the shuttle bobbin to be replaced comes against the guiding edge of the severing device, it is guided downwardly to the cutting edge. A knife plate is pivotally mounted on the cutter plate with a notch so positioned as to receive the thread as it is guided below the cutting edge. The lower edge of this notch forms a knife edge slidable against the cutting edge of the cutter plate, in the manner of ashears, when the knife plate is swung upwardly to closed position. The knife plate is swung to open position to receive a thread by means of a downwardly projecting nose, which is struck by a box plate of the lay during its forward movement just prior to the entrance of the thread into the cutting notch and is then closed by an edge of the knife plate, extending rearwardly of the guiding edge of the cutter plate, which is struck by the forwardly advancing lay immediately after the thread has entered the cutting notch. The cutting plate is then thrown upwardly by the lay to its inactive position. The severed end of the thread is caught and held between the knife plate and a holding plate, secured to the cutting plate, until released by a subsequent opening of the knife plate. The cutting device also acts as the usual revoker arm to prevent the operation of the bobbin changing mechanism when the shuttle has not been completely driven into the shuttle box.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, a revoker and thread severing means 10 is mounted on a forwardly extending revoker arm 12 in position to project over a lay 14 and so that it may be lowered into the path of the lay when the arm 12 is swung downwardly about a pivot 15 on which the arm 12 is supported on the loom. The position and movement of the arm 12 is controlled through a rod 16 or equivalent connecting device from a feeler mechanism of any standard or suitable construction, not shown, which holds the arm 12 and severing means 10 in lifted position, out of the path of the lay during the weaving of the cloth, the lay moving backwards and forwards in the usual manner while a shuttle 18 is thrown from one side of the loom to the other on a race plate 20. When the thread in the shuttle 18 approaches exhaustion, the feeler mechanism is operated to lower the arm 12 and severing device 10 into the path of movement of the lay 14, the fecler mechanism also acting in the usual manner to eject the nearly exhausted bobbin from the shuttle when the shuttle returns to the proper position in its shuttle box 22 at one end of the raceway 20. The action. of the feeler or detector mechanism is such that the arm 12 and device 10 are lowered when the lay has completed about one half of its backward movement so that on its next forward movement, when the shuttle 18 has been thrown into the shuttle box 22, the thread which extends thereto over the race plate is engaged by the device 10, which is thereupon actuated by the lay to sever the thread and hold the severed end.
he severing and revoking device 10 comprises a cutter plate 24 having a horizontally extending neck portion 26, which fits in a receiving groove 28 of the revoker arm 12, and a head portion 30 which extends downwardly and forwardly to such a position that its lower end just clears the box plate 82 when the device is in lowered position. The lower edge 34 of the plate 24 slopes downwardly and forwardly from above the level of the top of the shuttle to a level just above the box plate 32 so that a thread 36 extending from the selvage 38 of a fabric being woven is deflected downwardly to a cutting edge 40 which projects forwardly from the lower end of the edge 34 forming a notch 42 in the head 30 in which the thread is received as the lay moves forwardly.
The thread which has been deflected into the notch 42 beneath the cutting edge 40 is severed by means of a knife plate 44 pivotally mounted on a bolt 46 against the face of the cutter plate 24 nearest the fabric bein woven and having a notch 48, which, when in open position, lies below the cutting edge 40 of the cutting plate 24 and within the notch 42, and the lower edge 50 of which acts as av shearing edge against cutting edge 40 when the plate 44 is rotated to closed position. The knife plate 44 is normally in closed position on the cutter plate 24 but when the device 10 is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3 a nose 52 on the end of the plate projects downwardly to a distance to be engaged and moved by the forwardly moving box plate 32 to swing the plate 44 to open position as the lay moves forwardly. As the knife plate is moved the rear of the edge 34 so as to be engaged by the lay in its further movement and to also act as a deflecting guiding edge for the thread 36. The further forward movement of the lay serves to deflect the thread 36 into the notch 48 in position to be severed as the knife edge 50 is slid past the cutting edge 40 of the plate 24. The knife plate 44 is thereupon turned to closed position, cutting the thread, on'the further forward movement of the lay, by the 'engageinent of the upper edge of the lay against the projecting rear edge 54 of the plate 44 as shown in Fig. 4, which is moved by the advancing lay until brought into alignment with the edge 34, in which movement the plate 44 is moved to closed position. The further forward movement of the lay brings the lay against the edge 34 and lifts this edge, swinging the entire device 10 upwardly to inactive position as shown in Fig. 5.
The end of the thread which is attached to the bobbin to be ejected is severed thereby so that it may be thrown with the cobbin from the machine. The other end of the thread which extends to the selvage 38 is however, gripped and held to the cutting device by means of a holding plate 56 secured against the face of the plate 44 by means of the bolt 46 and having a notch coinciding with the notch 42 of the cutter plate 24. The holder or gripping plate 56 is held in fixed position relative to the cutter plate 24 by means of a pin 58 extending through a slot 60 in the knife plate 44, which permits the movement of the plate 44 within its proper limits, to the plate 24, in which the end of the pin is secured. The adjacent edges of the notches of plates 44 and 56 are bent or rounded as at 62 to avoid a cutting or shearing action on the thread 36 and to enable the contacting or adjacent faces of these plates to grip and hold the end of the thread. The plates 24, 44 and 56 may be held tightly together by means of a plate spring member 63 confined between the plate 56 and the head 01 the bolt 46 with suflicient pressure tohold the plates tightly together. The thread is thus held until it comes into contact with a temple cutter 65 at the selvage 38 which cuts it adjacent the selvage. Upon the next opening movement of the knife plate 44, the thread, which has been severed from the selvage 38 by the temple cutter i then released and dropped from the severing device 10.

For this purpose the revoker arm 12 is secured in this groove 28 by means of a bolt 68 passing through a hole in the neck portion 26 and through a slot 70 in the revoker arm 12 to permit a longitudinal adjustment of the position of 'ihe cutter plate 24. Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s: 7
1. A device of the type described which comprises, a cutter plate having a downwardly and forwardly extending lower edge and a cutting edge at the lower portion of said edge and at an angle thereto, and a knife plate pivoted on said cutter plate and having a notch forming a knife edge slidable past said cutter edge to close said notch, a nose projecting below said cutter plate, and a rear edge projecting rearwardly of said downwardly sloping edge of said cutter plate when said notch is in open position.
2. A device of the type described which comprises, a cutter plate having a down ward'ly and forwardly extending lower edge and a cutting edge at the lower portion of said edge and at an angle thereto, a knife plate pivoted on said cutter plate and having the path of the device 10 lifts the device a notch forming a knife edge slidable past a holder plate in spaced relation to said cutter plate, a pin extending between said plates, a bolt extending between said plates, and a knife plate between said cutter and holding plates having a notch, one edgev of which moves past said cutting edge as a shear, a nose projecting downwardly past' the end of said cutter plate, and a rear edge projecting rearwardly of the rear edge of said cutter plate when said knife plate is in open position, said knife plate having a slot through which said pin extends.
4. A device of the type described which comprises a cutter plate having a neck por tion for mounting on a revoker arm of a loom, a head portion depending downwardly from said neck portion and a cutting edge in the lower portion of said head, and a knife plate pivoted adjacent one face of said cutter plate and having a notch having a knife edge movable past said cutting edge, a nose projecting downwardly below said head portion and an edge adapted to swing rearwardly of said head portion.
5. A device of the type described which comprises, a cutter plate having a neck portion and a head portion depending downwardly and forwardly from said neck portion, said head portion having a cutting edge in its lower end, a holding plate mounted in spaced position on said head and conforming to the shape of said head, a pivot bolt securing said plates together and a holding pin extending between said plates, a knife plate between said plates having a notch and a knife edge forming an edge of said notch and coacting with said cutting edge to form a shears, a nose depending downwardly of said head, and a slot to receive said holding pin.

Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a lay, a revoker arm, a cutter plate mounted on said revoker arm and having a portion projecting downwardly and forwardly over said lay and having a cutting edge in the lower portion of said downwardly pro ecting portion, a knife blade moumed on said cutter plate and.

Apparatus of the type described which comprises a lay, a revoker arm, a cutter plate having a neck portion mounted on said revoker arm and a portion projecting forwardly and downwardly over said lay, said projecting portion having a cutting edge in its lower portion, a knife blade pivotally mounted adjacent one face of said cutter plate and having a knife edge forming a shear with said cutting edge, and means on said knife blade engageable by said lay to ,respectively open and close said shears at .g n'eable by said lay to open and to-close said shears at successive spaced intervals in the forward movement of said lay, and a holding plate mounted adjacent the outer face of said knife blade in fixed position to said cutter plate.
Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a lay, a revoker arm, a cutter plate having a neck portion mounted on said revoker arm and a portion projecting for- .wardly and downwardly over said lay, said projectingportion having a cutting edge in its lower portion, a knife blade pivotally mounted adjacent one face of said cutter plate and having a knife edge forming a shears with said cutting edge, means on said knife blade engageable by said lay to open and to close said shears at successive spaced intervals in the forward movement of said lay, and means for permitting the adjustment of said cutter plate longitudinally on said rovoker arm.
10. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a lay, a revoker arm, a cutter plate having a neck portion mounted on said revoker arm and a portion projecting forwardly and downwardly over said lay, said projecting portion having a cutting edge in 1ts lower portion, a knife blade pivotally mounted ad acent one face of said cutter plate and having a knife ed e forming a shears with said cutting edge, means on said knife blade engageable by said lay to open and to close said shears at successive spaced intervals in the forward movement of said lay, means permitting the adjustment of said cutter plate longitudinally on said revoker arm, and a holder plate mounted in fixed position to said cutter plate on the outer face of said knife blade.
11. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, an arm having a cutting edge in its lower portion, a knife blade pivoted on said arm and forming a shears with said cutting edge, a downwardly depending nose on said knife blade, a lay positioned to engage said nose and swing said knife blade to open said shears during the forward movement of said lay, a rearwardly projecting edge on said knife edge positioned to be engaged by the further movement of said lay to move said blade and close said shears, and means actuated by a feeler mechanism to lower said arm into position tooperate said knife blade by said lay.
12. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a revoker arm, a lay, a cutter plate mounted on said revoker arm in position to be lowered thereby and having a portion depending downwardly and forwardly over said lay, and a cutting ed e on said portion, a knife plate pivotally mounted on said cutter plate and having a knife edge forming a shears with said cutting edge, a down wardly depending nose on said knife plate and a rearwardly projecting edge on said knife plate above said knife edge, said lay moving in position to engage said nose and move said knife plate to open said shears and to engage said rearwardly projecting edge and move said knife plate to close said shears at successive intervals of the forward movement of said lay when said revoker arm lowers said cutter plate.
13. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a revoker arm, a lay, a cutter plate mounted on said revoker arm in position to be lowered thereby, and having a portion depending downwardly and forwardly over said lay, and a cutting edge on said downwardly and forwardly extending portion, a knife plate pivotally mounted on said cutter plate and having a knife edge form ing a shears with said cutting edge, a clownwardly depending nose and a rearwardly projecting edge on said knife plate adapted to be successively engaged by said lay to respectively open and close said shears at successive intervals when said plate is lowered, and means for adjusting said cutter plate forwardly of said revoker arm.

Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a revoker arm, a lay, a cutter plate mounted on said revoker arm in position to be lowered thereby, and having a portion depending downwardly and forwardly over said lay, and a cutting edge on said downwardly and forwardly depending portion, a holder plate mounted on said cutter plate in fixed spaced relation thereto, a knife plate pivotally mounted between said cutter plate and said holder plate and having a knife edge forming a shears with said cutter edge, a downwardly depending nose, and a rearwardly projecting edge on said knife plate positioned to be successively engaged by said lay in its forward movement to move said knife plate to respectively open and close said shears at successive intervals when said plate is lowered by said revoker arm.
15. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a lay, a revoker arm, means on said arm to out and hold a thread, and means actuated by said lay onits forward movement to successively open said cutting and holding means, to receive a thread therein and to close said cutting and holding means.
16. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a lay, a revoker arm adapted to be lowered to revoking position and cutting and gripping means on said revoker arm adapted to be opened to receive a thread and to close to cut and hold said thread, and means actuated by said lay on its forward movement to at successive intervals open said means, close it to cut and hold a thread and push said arm upwardly to inactive position.
