Description
April 27 1926;
C. W. FLESCH El AL ROOF CONNECTION Filed Feb. 15, 1926 Patented Apr. 27, 1926.
NHTE SAT'E CHARLES FLESCH AND WILLIAM J. SCI-IIMITT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
noon CONNECTION.
Application filed February 15, 1926. Serial No. 88,429.
To all "whom it may concern.
Be it knownthat we, CHARLES \V. Fnnscrr and WILLIAM J. SOHMITT, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State 0t New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Root Connections, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to root connections and more particularly to the type employed for draining a root. An ob ect of this invention is to provide a construction which will permit the roof engaging flange, the article obstructing rib, a seat for the strainer and the'dowirspout connection to be formed economically from one piece of material.
To this and other ends, the invention con sists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a. plan view of the connection with part of the strainer broken away;
Fig. 2 is a reduced section on the line 22, Fig. 1, showing the connection mounted upon a roof; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing the manner in which the strainer is held against movement on its seat by the article obstructing rib.
Referring more particularly to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indicates a root and 2 the down-spout. The down-spout connection 3 is, in this instance, formed from sheet material in the shape of a tunnel having a reduced end 4 for connection with the down-spout 2. At the upper end of the funnel shaped portion 3 an outwardly presented portion 5 is provided which is formed in one piece with the portion 8 and acts as a seat for the strainer 6 which, in this instance, is in the form of an inverted cup-shaped member provided with openings 7, the edge of this strainer being rolled to provide a bead. Prqectmg upwardly from the seat 5 and in one piece with the latter is an abutment 9, the inner surface of which is substantially equal in diameter I wardly from the portion 9 is a portion 10 which acts as an article obstructing surface to prevent gravel or other articles rolling mto contact with the strainer '7 or collecting about the strainer to pass through the openings thereof. Beyond the article obstructing surface 10 an outwardly presented flange 11 is provided which serves to rest upon the root and support the connection 3.
It will thus be seen that the down-spout connecting portion 3, the seat 5 for the strainer, the strainer abutment 9, the article obstruction portion 10 and the supporting flange 11 may all he formed from one piece of sheet material. The rib formed by the portions 9 and 10 has the double function of acting as a. deflector for articles, and as an abutment tor confining the strainer on the seat 1. This arrangement makes it unnecessary to provide any securing means for the strainer which may also be readily formed of sheet material without any expensive operations.
lVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A roof connection comprising a downspout connecting portion, an outwardly presented portion at the upper end of the downspout connecting portion forming a seat for a strainer, an upwardly extending portion forming an abutment for a strainer, a downwardly and outwardly extending portion leading directly from the upper edge of the abutment and forming an article obstructing surface and an outwardly extendingportion leading directly from said article obstructing surface and forming a support for the connection, and a strainer resting on the seat and having its edge in abutment with the upwardly extending abutment about the seat.
