Original application filed July 2, 1924, Serial No. 723,7?8. Divided and this ap'pIication f led January 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EUGENE C. STAoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a. new and useful. Mold Structure, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to a mold structure designed primarily for use in casting swivel links such as disclosed, for example, in my Patent 1,535,350, issued April 28, 1925, and of which the present application isa division.
In the construction of load binders such as disclosed in my Patent 1,538,412, issued May 19, 1925, it is essential that a swivel link be employed in which the eye portion is rotatably mounted relative to the link portion but the two parts are held together without special fastening means. Heretofore this method of forming a swivel link has been unsuccessful but, by following the method disclosed in the patent of which this case is a division, the production of a swivel link has been successfully accomplished by the use of a mold structure such as constitutes the present invention.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mold structure which, when assembled for use, will provide means whereby the gases generated between the contacting cold metal and molten metal during the casting process will vent without distortion of the metal being cast.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In saiddrawings- Figure 1 is a section through a portion of the mold such as constitutes the present invention and showing a swivel link prior to pouring molten metal into the mold.
Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of the Serial No. 191.
mold showing the swivel eye engaged by the metal which has been cast in the mold. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 and 2 designate opposed portions ot a mold between which may be supported the eye portion 30f the swivel link to be produced. This eye portion is of metal previously cast and includes a cylindrical stem 4; having an annular rib or flange 5. Thesand in the mold is so shaped by the pattern as to provide two or more sand nodes 6 which extend'inwardly to and contact with i the flange or rib 5. Thus it will be seen that when molten. metal is admitted to the mold it will flow around the stem 4 and rib flange 5 and also around the nodes 6, as shown at 7.
Consequently the link thus produced will have the stem 4 and rib 5 embedded therein but recesses 8 will be provided in the link through the provision of the nodes 6 which will open into the space rib 5.
' When the metal is-poured into the mold, any moisture which may have condensed upoccupied by the I on the stem 4- and' rib 5 is converted into gas which will flow along the surface of the stem 4: and seep into the sand forming the nodes 6. This course will be followed by the gases because it is the path of least resistance and, consequently, the article produced will not. be formed with blows or defective places where it opens around the stem 4, but, instead, will be left with perfectly outlined recesses 8 through which the gases have escaped.
What is claimed is 1. A mold for use in the production of swivel links which includes opposed mold members having bodies of sand therein for receiving an eye member therebetween, there being opposed sand nodes extending from the bodies for contacting with opposed portions of the engaged eye member.
- 2. A mold for use in. the production of swivel links, including opposed bodles of molding sand forming a recess therebetween for shaping molten metal into the link portion of a swivel link, said sand bodies constituting means for gripping an eye member of cast metal and holding it during he pouring of the metal in the formation of the link, and sand nodes extending from said bodies for engaging portions of the eye member to vent gases from the surface thereof during the pouring of the molten metal.
3. The combination with a mold including opposed bodies of molding sand having a link forming recess therebetween, said sand bodies constituting means for engaging and supporting a previously cast eye member having an enlargement projecting into the recess, of means integTal with the sand bodies for venting gases generated upon the surface of the eye member during the casting of the link member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature.
EUGENE C. STACY.
