UNITED" STATES i 1,580,622 PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD u. Massin, oF wYNNEWooD, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATCH PACKET AND IGNITER.
Application led August 3, 1923. Serial No. 655,438.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. .MAssnY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wynnewood, Montgomery County, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Packets and Igniters, of which the following is'a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to match packets having means for igniting the matches upon withdrawal therefrom.
A principal object of my invention is to provide a packet of matches preferably made from paper and having integral therewith and contained therein a bank or banks` of matches which may be detached and withdrawn therefrom and ignited during the.
withdrawal, without opening the packet.
A further object of my invention is to provide a packet of matches having two banks of matches made integral therewith and contained therein, the match heads of one of the banks extending below or beyond the match heads of the other bank.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a packet of matches having two banks of matches made integral therewith, the match heads being contained within the packet, the match heads of one bank being out of alinemnt with the match heads of the other bank and the splints of .the matches extending out of the-packet, the splints of one bank extending beyond the splints of the other bank.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a permanently closed packetof matches, made from foldable material, matches formed integrally therewith and contained therein, igniting material upon the interior of the packet, the matches being selectively withdrawable and adapted to be ignited when drawn across the igniting material.
My invention further includes all of the other various objects and novel features of construction and arrangementA hereinafter more definitely specified and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a view of the packet before folding of a preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of the packet shown in Fig. 1 with the match portions and iaps folded into their first position; Fi 4 is a view of the completed packet; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a side view of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a View, with parts broken away, of a .completed packet of another formof mv invention; Fig. 9 is a view, with parts brokeii away, of a partially folded packet of another form of my invention; Fig. 10 is a view of thecompleted packet shown in Fig. 9; Fig. 11 1s a side view thereof; Fig. 12 is a view of a packet b efore folding of another forni of my invention; Fig. 13 is a side View of Fig. 12; Fig. 14 is a view similar to Fig. 12 with the match portions folded into their first position; Fig. 15 is a side view of Fig. 14; Fig: 16 is a view of the completed packet shown in Fig. 12; Fig. 17 is a section on line 1'7-17 of Fig. 16; Fig. 18 is a side view of Fig. 16 and Fig. 19 is a bottom view of Fig. 16.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1, the blank from which the packet is formed is-shown at 1 with the banks of match heads 2 and 3 and the ignitinor surface 4 added thereto. This blank may be of any suitable material, preferably 'paper of suitable thickness and stiffness and may be formed by a die. The dash-and- dot lines 5, 6, 7 and 7 indicate weakened portions of the blank, as by scoring, whereby the matches and packet may be folded into the completed packet. Holes 8 arey provided through which a staple 9 maybe passed iii order to hold the packet permanently closed but it will be understood that any other suitable means for this purpose may be employed. The igniting material 4 may be applied to the blank in any suitable manner, Ias b v painting a suitable liquid thereon. It will be understood, of course, that this ignitiiig surface may be of any desired form and material provided that it will be adapted to ignite the match heads 2 and 3 when the latter are drawn across it.
The blank spaces on `the sides of the packet may be utilized for advertising purposes, if desired, the printing being done either before or after the cutting of the blank by the die.
It will be seen that the splints 10, i.,e. those portions of the matches extending from the score 5 to the end of the match, in bank A are longer than the splints of the matches forming bank B. When, therefore, the splints of the matches are folded about the scores 5 and 6 into the position shown, for example, in Fig. 3, the match heads of bank A will lie beyond -theI match heads of bank B; by this arrangement the thickness which would be present if the. match heads were side by side is avoided as is also Contact between the banks lof match heads.
Another advantage of my packet when two banks of matches are contained therein is that when the packet is permanently closed the splints of the matches forming bank B extend beyond the splints of the matches forming bank A, thereby facilitating the detachment and withdrawal of ,the matches; in practice, the matches forming bank B will be utilized first, being more conveniently accessible. As the matches in bank B are withdrawn, the matches in bank A are then rendered more conveniently accessible. As the match is detached by tearing and withdrawn from the packet the match head will be drawn across the igniting surface 4 and ignited, a slight pressure being exerted by the fingers upon the packet thereby causing greater frictional contact between the match head and the igniting surface.
In my preferred form and in the modification shown in Fig. 8, flaps 11 and 12 are provided which are folded over banks of matches A and B respectively, after the latter have been bent or folded about the scores 5 and 6 respectively, into the packet, the iaps thus providing separating means for the banks of matches within the` acket and also igniting surfaces for both sldes of the match heads as they are withdrawn from the packet.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the sides 13 and 14 of the packet are prolonged to form tabs 15 through which the staple 9 passes; and adhesive may be applied along the contacting edges of the packet at 16 to keep the packet permanently closed.
In the modification shown in F i-g. 9, but one bank of matches is contained within the packet, this modification comprising the eliminating of the flaps 12 and the. bank of matches B shown in Fig. 1; the blank thus formed may be folded into the packet shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
In the modification shown in Figs. 12-19 inclusive, the iaps 11 and 12 of my preferred form as shown in Fig. l are dispensed with and the staple 9 is fixed in the sides of the packet instead of in the bottom. The tabs 17 may be used, if desired, for the printing thereon of directions for the use of the packet or other matter.
It will be found desirable in the manufacture of my match packet to dip the match splints in wax which adds intiammability to the match and assists in the burning of the match after the match head has been ignited. The match heads may be made in any well known way, such as by dipping the ends of the splints in a suitable sulphur mixture or any composition of combustible material which, when drawn across the igniting surface, will cause ignition of the match head. It may also be thought desirable to dip the splints and heads in a composition, well-known to those skilled in the art, which will serve to prevent afterglow of the match after the flame has been extinguished.
While I have herein described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not thereby desire or intend to limit myself to any precise details of construction or arran e; ment of parts as the same may be modi ed in minor particulars from those shown in the drawings and herein described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A folded paper match packet having two banks of matches made integral therewith, partly projecting and Withdrawable therefrom without opening the packet, the match heads within the packet of one of the banks extending beyond the match heads of the other bank.
2. A match packet made from a blank of foldable material and having two banks of matches made integral therewith and partially contained therein, the match heads of one of the banks extending below or beyond the match heads of the other bank within the packet and the splints of one bank eX- tending beyond the splints without the packet of the other bank, the matches being withdrawable from the packet without opening the same.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of August, 1923.
EDWARD M. MASSEY.
