To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushions, of which'the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in cushions and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with auto seats, and it is an object of the invention to provide a cushion of this kind constructed in a manner whereby the front and back may be relatively adjusted in accordance with the re quirements of practice.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cushion of this character particularly adapted to provide a support for the back of the. occupant ofthe seat and more particularly the driver of an automobile.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cushion whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and other wise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a cushion constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a back board of requisite dimensions and 2 denotes a front board, said front board having a suitable padding 3 disposed over the outer face thereof. The frame F is positioned substantially midway between the boards 1 and 2 and is free therefrom, said frame F being rectangular in form and having the lower portion of its side members 6 connected by a cross member 7, the central portion of the member 7 being provided with a bearing or sleeve 8 through which is freely disposed a rod 9. The inner end portion of the rod 9 has swivel engagement therewith a member provided with the oppositely directed ears 10 to which are pivotally connected the links 11, said links being also pivotally connected, as at 12, to the front and back boards 1 and 2. By requisite endwise movement of the rod 9 the links 11 operate to move the boards 1 and 2 one with respect to the other, an innermost adjustment of said boards 1 and 2 being indicated by broken lines in Figure 1.

An end member 14 of the frame F at its central part is provided with an inwardly extending housing 15 through which the outer end portion of the rod 9 is threaded the extremity of the rod 9 within the hous- 111g 15 being provided with an operating member 16. From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cushion constructed in accordance with my inventionis particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which" it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim 1. A cushion comprising, in combination, front and back boards, an expansible medium interposed therebetween, a frame positioned between the boards, a cross mem-Ffipositioned between the boards, a cross member carried by the frame, a rod freely dis ber carried by the frame, a rod freely disposed through said cross member and inwardly of the frame, links pivotally connected with the boards, a member in swiveled connection with the inner portion of the rod, said links being also pivotally connected with said member, said rod being in threaded engagement with amember of the frame.

2. A cushion comprising, in combination, front and back boards, an expansible medium interposed therebetween, a frame posed through said cross member, links operatively connecting an end portion of the rod and the boards, a housing carried by a member of the frame, said rod being threaded through a Wall of the housing, and means carried by the portion of the rod within the housing for rotating the rod.
