Be it known thatI, ARTHUR A. BrERLEIN, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal Stamping and Drawing Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to metal drawing presses of the type having a metal deforming or shaping plunger which operates 1nside a work-holder adapted to hold the work during the shaping operation, and it relates especially to an improved operating mechanism for the Work-holder.
The invention is an improvement over that disclosed in an application filed in the name of Henry J. Hinde, Serial No. 374,269, filed April 16, 1920. v
In the construction constituting the subject matter of the Hinde application, 1m-
. proved mechanism is provided for operating the work-holder, this mechanism being arranged so as to be operated from. both ends of the plunger operating crank-shaft or twin driving ears thereon, from which motion is transmitted to slides at op osite ends of the frame, and from the s11 es to bell- .cranks which are connected to the workholder through connecting links, and are sides adjacent the u per corners thereof,
this mechanism thoug simple in construction, providing uniformity of drive, and avoiding entirely the use of commonlyemployed rock-shafts and other long parts subject to torsional stresses.
The principal object of the present 1nvention is to rovide a press having an improved workolder operating mechanism, which possesses all the advantages of the -'Hinde construction, but is so arranged and constructed that the twin gears on the plunger operating crank-shaft can beplaced close to the ends of the frame in whlch the crank-shaft has its bearings, and" has the parts which transmit movement to bellof the frame, arranged The invention may be briefly summarized as consistingin certain novel details of construction, and combinations and arrangements ofparts' which will be" described in 1 the specification and set forth in ithe appended claims.
In the accompanying sheets of drawings showing an embodiment of the invention which operates with high efliciency, Fig. 1 s a side view of a press equipped with the improved work-holder operating mechanism; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 represents the frame of the press, provided at the bottomjwith a support 11 for the matrix, which is not shown. At the top of the press is a plunger operating crank-shaft 12, provided with cranks 13, which are connected by links or connecting rods 14 to the work deforming or shaping plunger, not shown. The plunger is surrounded and guided by a work-holder 15, which is guided in ways onthfe sides 10 of the frame 10, and is actuated by mechanism constituting the subect matter of the present invention.
Thecrank-shaft 12 is journaled in bearings mounted in the sides 10 of the frame, and in this instance, intermediate bearings 16, also are provided which support the shaft just inside the cranks 13, as shown, so that the crank-shaft is efi'ectively supported adacent the points at WhlOh power is transmitted from the crank-shaft as well as close by pinions 18 (see Fig. 2) on a shaft19,
suitably supported on the frame of the machine, this shaft in turn being driven through a; gear 20'and a pinion 21 shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 on a driving shaft 22 to which power may be applied m any de sired manner, the shaft 22 being likewise supported, in any desired manner on the frame of the machine.
Considering now. the mechanism for operating the Work-holder, it'will be observed thatgu1des 23, are provided at opposite ends of the frame below the gears 17 which guides accommodate a pair of slides 24 which are moved vertically on the guides by rods 25, which are on the outer sides of, and are actuated by the gears, each rod being connected at an off-center point 26 to one connected by links 27 to a pair of arms 28 mounted on studs 29 supported by the frame on both sides of and symmetrical with respect to the vertical center plane of the machine. It will be understood that each of the slides 24: as it is reciprocated vertically, shifts the two associated arms 28, as in Lindgren Patent No. 1,268,370, granted to The Toledo Machine & Tool Company, assignee of the present invention, the corresponding arms in the Lindgren patent being connected to and operating rock-shafts which as already stated, the present construction avoids.
In the present construction, the upper portions of these arms 28, which are located substantially entirely outside of, or lateral- 1y beyond the outer faces of the driving gears 17, are connected by universal couplings or joints 30 to rods 31, which extend upwardly outside of the gears 17, and at their upper ends are connected by universal joints 32 to the outwardly projecting arms of bell-cranks 33 mounted on studs or equivalent supporting means 34, located at the four upper corners of the frame above the gears 17. That is to say, two of these bellcranks 33 are provided at the top of each side of the frame, the pair at each end of the frame and located respectively on oppo site sides thereof being actuated by one slide,'and the other pairsimilarly arranged, but supported at the opposite end of the frame being actuated by the other slide.
The inner, arms of the bell-cranks 33 are connected by links 35 to inwardly projecting arms of bell-cranks 36, mounted on studs 37, two on one side of the frame, and two on the opposite side, and the lower arms of these bell-cranks are connected by links 38 to the outer four corners of the work-holder 15, the links 28 and the arms of the bell-cranks to which the upper ends of the links are connected, constituting in effect, toggle arms which actuate the work-holder 15 in precisely the desired manner. Thus the plunger operating crank-shaft is driven uniformly at both ends by twin gears located close to the frame and to the outer bearings supporting the crank-shaft as is desired to obtain the best results, and the work-holder is actuated uniformly from both ends of the machine without the necessity for movement transmitting rock-shafts, both gears operating similarly the two slides which are connected to the four arms and the latter by the four movement transmitting rods 31 which are on the outer sides of the gears, actuating the four upper bellcranks 33 moving them in planes at right angles to the planes of movement of the arms, and the four bell-cranks 36 being actuated in planes parallel to the planes of movement of the bell-cranks 33, and operating the work-holder uniformly onopposite sides and on opposite ends thereof with a toggle action.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a press of the type having a plunger and a work-holder, a plunger operating crank-shaft with driving gears at both ends, independently mounted bell-cranks on opposite sides of the frame near the top thereof, and mechanisms actuated by both said gears and located wholly outside of the Space between the gears and the frame for actuating the bell-cranks and operative connections between said bell-cranks and the work-holder.
2. In a press of the type having a plunger and a work-holder, a frame, a plunger operating crank-shaft at the upper part of the frame'provided with driving gears at both ends, the gears being located close to the frame, slides on opposite ends of the frame, independently mounted bell-cranks supported on opposite sides of the frame near the top, means connecting said independently mounted bell-cranks to the W0 kholder, and mechanism including movement transmitting rods on the outer sides of the gears for transmitting movement from the slides to the bell-cranks.
In a press of the type having a plunger and a Work-holder, a frame, a crank-shaft for operating the plunger, twin' driving gears on the ends of the crank-shaft and located adjacent the frame, slides on opposite wardly from the arms on the outer sides of both gears.
4. In a press having a plunger and a Workholder, a plunger operating shaft near the top of the machine,.a pair of bell-cranks on each side of the machine near the top thereof and connected to the work-holder, means for actuating the bell-cranks including a pair of arms at each end of the frame and movable in planes at right angles to the plunger operating shaft, a pair of rods extending upwardly along each end of the machine and connected to said arms, a pair of bell-cranks at each end of the machine and at the top thereof and connected to said rods so as to be actuated in planes at right angles to the planes of movement of the arms, and means connecting the said last mentioned bellcranks with the first-mentioned bell cranks.
5. In a press having a plunger and a workholder, a work-holder actuating mechanism comprising bell-cranks at opposite sides of the machine adjacent opposite ends thereof and connected to the work-holder said bellcranks mounted to swing in planes parallel to the axis of the crank-shaft, a second-set of which the bell-crank actuating mechanism at each end of the machine is connected to and actuated by said plunger operating shaft.
6. In a. press having a plunger and a workholder, a crank-shaft for operating the plunger, gears on the crank shaft at opposite ends thereof four bell-cranks arranged on opposite sides of the machine near the outer faces of the gears, movement transmitting rods arranged exteriorly of the gears ends of the rods, and connections from the gears to the slides to actuate the same.
7. A press havin a plunger and a workholder, a crank-sha t supported by the frame for operating the plunger, four toggle arms supported on opposite sides of the frame near the top thereof and arranged to swing on axes transverse to the axis of the crankshaft, said arms being connected to the workholder, and means for rocking said arms comprising four levers supported near the top of the frame to swing on axes transverseto the axis of the crank-shaft and each operatively connected to one of said arms, and a pair of movement transmitting rods arranged exteriorly of the frame at each end thereof, each rod having its upper end connected to one of said levers, and means at both ends of the machine and connected to hereunto afiix my signature.
