To @ZZ whom t may concern: t e j.
Be it known that I, THe-MAS VVESTLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgway, in the county Vof Elkand State of Pennsylvania, ihave inventedceitain new anduseful Improvements in Binders, of
which the'following is'a specification, referl` encebeing had therein to the accompanying drawing.- Y
This invention relates to a binder. While `nnrestricted in its applicatiomit is especially. 'useful` as an inexpensive binder for af batchof'sheets in eitherloose or semi-bound condition'.v
It is contemplated among the objects of the invention` to provide a resilient element of-'sufiicient flexibility .to'hold azbatch of leaveswith about the `same pressure one Would'eXert with his fingers inf'the arrangement of the leaves with their edgesin perfect alinement, In other Words, a clamping mem.- ber of considerable flexibility which will permit the insertion of a batch of leaves between the clamping members and retain the leaves with a flexibility which will permit the jogging of the leaves so as to aline the edges thereof. Y Y
It is aV further object of the invention to associate with a clamping member of considerable' flexibilit another clamping -member of great rigidity, so that when leaves have been properly assembled in the inner or moreflexible clamp, the outer-or rigid clamp may be applied. This is done, preferably, by sliding the flexible clamp intoV position to be embraced by clamping members of the outer binding element, so that the inner clamp acts as a guide, permitting the leaves to be slid intov place without danger of disarranging or tearing them, and.v
when so inserted they will be subject to the greater pressure of the outer element, in,- suring their retention in the original arrangement.
Still another ob]ect of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for lim- 'tion' of the'inner member;
`Other objects and advantages will in 'part Ybe apparent, :and inf-.part be brought-out more v'fully in the description which follows.:
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 'the `following.views being shown Figure l is a fragmentary view in perspective showing an embodimentof the invention as a Vbinder for a batch of leavesand carrying a cover, as inthe well-known memorandum or.V order book; "Figa 2 is a view in perspective of aninner orv Y rather flexible binding member whichv is in-contact'with' the leaves or pad' toglbe bpund'gffl f @if .Figf 3- is a similar fviewlof anouteror morey rigid member which is-adapted toleriert a vclamping Vaction onv the vinnermember Whenffassembledas in'Fig, 15T
Fig. tis "a view in bottom plan ofa por- -rn-Fig. 5 is a similar view-of the outer membeI-andi y' 'r Y: Fig@ is a fragmentary` detailview. in eicvation showing a manner of assembling the parts. Y
Inthese views the reference character 1' designates, generally, either a batch of loose leaves or a ypad of ordinary construction, and ,2 a cover therefor, which when connected together' by the binder comprising Athe-.present invention, constitute a book of the memorandum ororder type.
The binder comprises an inner member having a back or body portion 3, and clamp-- ing or side members 4. The back may be provided with'openings 5 for the purpose of increasing flexibility, or these may be dispensed withif desired. r.Both the back and sides, or clamping members, are constructed so that they will be rather flexible and adapted to embrace a batch of lleaves with a pressure/about `equal to thatY which would be exerted by the fingersin alining the edges of loose leaves.v In other words, when the ordinary amount of loose rleaves is inserted between the clamping members of the inner member, the membersv will be suiciently flexible to permit a certai n amount of movement of the leaves due to jogging or arring, but retain them inY this position and act asa. guide while the leaves and inner binder are being inserted in a permanent or outer binding element.
This comprises, as here shown, a back or body portion 6, and side or clamping members 7 Both the clamping members 4: and 7 are attached to their respective body portions and enend, in spaced relation7 at an angle to the body or back. The outer member is made ot' more rigid material, but of suiiicient resiliency so that the side members 7 will have a clamping or binding action on members 4L When the inner member' is slid into assembled position as shown in Fig. l..
Means are provided for limiting movement of the parts in one direction, and as here shown the outer clamps or sides 7 are provided With slanted or bevelled portions 8. One of the inn-er clamping members 4i has an outstanding lug or projection l9 extending' outwardly a slight distance beyond 'the plane of the outer surface oi the clamping member on which it is mounted. .Vhen the inner member is slid into position between the members 7 this lug bears against one of the b'evelled orv slanted edges 8 ot the outer member and insures proper positioning of the inner and outer members. It also acts as a stop, determining the limits Vin one direction of movement ot these members When in assembled position.
The body or back of the outer member may also be provided With openings l0 for the reception of mea-ns for securing the outer member to the cover. Rivets or the like may be disposed in these openings; and the entire structure is of simple construction and has proven very successizul in operation.
vWhile my invention is shown in connection with the embodiment herein illustrated, it will be understood that do not Wish to be limited to the precise form ofthis disclosure7 as many changes in the structure and arrangement et' the parts are thought to be Within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claim. i
`What I claim is:
A binder comprising a cover element; a iiller element slidable Within the cover element; and stop means on one of the elements to limit movement in one direction of the filler element; said iiller element comprising a back, and a pair o clamping sides extending from the back in substantially parallel relation and adapted to yieldingly retain a batch of loose leaves, and said cover element comprising a back, a pair of clamping sides extending in converging relation from the back and adapted to exert a clamping action of greater degree on the leaves tlireugh the clamping sides olf-said filler element, and a cover member lined to the back and extend-l ing past said sides to overlie the sheets of the filler element When said elements vare assembled.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
THOMAS TNESTLAND.
