Be it known that I, JULIAN S. GRAVELY. a citizen of the United States, residing at lVytheville, in the county of lVythe, iState of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Focusing Handlainpsg' and I do hereby declare the fol lowingto be a full, clear, and exact def scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vbattery hand lamps of the type disclosed in the patent granted to A. L. Staples, February 13, 1923,
No. 1345245, wherein the character of the beam of light can be altered by varying the position of the lamp bulb with respect to the reflector.l t l .L
The principal object of this invention kis to provide a lamp support of simple construction, theprincipal feature being the provisionof a metal lamp' socket which can` be moved with respect to a reflector supported out of contact with the lamp socket. In vorder to make a hand lamp of this char.- acter, it has heretofore been considered necessary to provide'a special lamp socket constructed in such amanner thatthelamp bulb is `insulated from the refiec'tor which is lin contact with the lamp socket, and such that the necessary 'electric connections` for the lamp bulb are provided inthe lamp socket. It has therefore been considered necessary, as shown by the Staples patent above referred to, to provide'a lamp socket consisting of' insulating material, this r`socle et being constructed in such a manner that electric conductors can be brought'into contact with the central conductor of the lamp bulband with' the"outer conductor of the bulb. if
The present Ainvention provides improved means for supporting the lamp reflector out 1 of Contact with the lamp socket. A metal lama socket is used and a su ort for this l P socket is provided together with means whereby this support cari be; moved so as to alter the position ofthe lampfsocket with respect to the reflector.; A conductor is provided incontact with the lamp socket and insulated from the socket support, for connecting one `of the lamp terminals to the ordinary contact strip of the hand lamp. Means are provided for insulating this conductor from the lamp socket support; and

The several parts described in thepreceding paragraph can be assembled in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4. The insulating washer 2#1 can be inserted in the lamp socket until it restson the bottom thereof, and then the parts iiuiiibeied 25, 18, 27, 21, 26, 29 and 28 can be appliedr to the bottom of the lamp socket vin the order named. The rivet 19 is then inserted from Vthe inside ofv the lamp socket, and the projecting'endof this rivet spun over, as shownin Fig. 1, to clamp the several parts together. l

I also prefer to provide means for preventing the lamp socket' and also the conductor 18 from rotating with respect to the *insu* lating washer 26 and the support 21, when a lamp bulb is screwed into the socket. A simple and eiiective means for accomplishing this result consists of a lug ,85, struck from the base or the inetallamp socket 16 y and adapted to enter ay depression indicated at 36 in the washer 26.
