Description

March 23 1926.
O. PETERMANN WATER HEATING ATTACHMENT FOR OIL AND GAS STOVES Filed Jan. 11, 1922 :EEIrEZ:
EH1 [ll] INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS,
Patented Mar. 23, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO PETERMANN, OF GROTON, NEW YORK.
Application filed January 11, 1922. Serial-No. 528,381.
To all 10. 10111 it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rro PETERMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Groton, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful ater-Heating Attachment for Oil and Gas Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a water heating attachment or tank for stoves having burners such as oil anc gas stoves etc, and particularly an arrangement of the water tank whereby the heatwhich usually goes to waste is utilized for heating the water without materially decreasin the heat that n rmally is used in cooking or other purposes or without retarding the normal functioning of the stove.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in Wl11Cl1 like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view of one form of stove as an oil. stove embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail view of water tank.
This attachment for stoveshaving burners comprises a tank arranged to surround the burner or combustion space of the burner and having a passage alined with such space, the tank being arranged below the top of the stove or the grid on which the cooking utensils are supported and the wall of the passage being spaced apart from the wall of the burner or chimney whereby such wall of the tank is heated by excess heat, not utilized in cooking or by heat reflected from the bottom of the cooking utensil.
In Fig. 1, 1 designates the tank which is shown as attached to an oil stove 2 including a lamp 3 having a burner'and combustion space or passage confined within the chimney 4 which extends upwardly, and terminates beneath the top or grid of the stove.
The tank 1 is here shown as annular in form and formed with a passage 6 around the chimney 4, the wall 7 of this passage being spaced apart from the chimney and having a contracted portion 8 preferably located at its upper end for engaging the top of the chimney and supporting the tank with its wall spaced apart from the chimney 4.
The tank is preferably open at its upper end, is provided with an annular top 9 which engages at its outer margin on the inner face of the outer wall of the tank and rests at its inner margin on the upperedge of the wall 7.
Owing to the fact, that the wall 7 is spaced apart from the chimney 4, the tank 7 is heated from the burner only by such heat as would otherwise be wasted and the tank is not injured by the heat if there is no water therein, and furthermore owing to the spacing of the wall 7 from the chimney 4, the heating of the cooking utensil is not retarded as it would be, in the absence of such space.
In operation, these attachments can be readly placed on the stoves for which they are designed by removing the grid, setting the tank in position relatively to the burner and again placing thegri-d in position.
ater can be filled into the tank by lifting the top 9, after first lifting the grid and drawn off through a faucet 15 in the bottom thereof.
This attachment is particularly advantageous in houses where there is no hot water. heater in operation especially during the summer as the water for washing dishes, etc, is heated by heat that heretofore went to waste, while the stove is in use for the ordinary household purposes.
What I claim is:
The combination of a stove having a burner including a chimney, an opening in the top of the stove, above and in line with the burner, having a greater diameter than the chimney, a grid extending across such opening, and a water heating attachment, comprising a tank formed with a vertical passage therethrough for the chimney, the tank surrounding the chimney, and having a top located beneath the grid, the wall of said passage being spaced apart from the chimney, and the chimney terminating short of the top of the tank, and the chimney engaging at its top the wall of said passage, and said passage flaring outwardly from the top of the chimney.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 24th day of August, 1921.
OTTO PETERMANN.
