Bythe provision of the relatively fiat or angirl'arly formed portions & iii the flange,
the flange and; the cap are materiality strengthened as Well as providing a gripping s n fa ce for the handling of the cap,'a,nd i;hei relied; edgeadjacent to; the lower Portions of these relatively flat sides further ma-te rial ly strengthens the flange and the lugs hile the. sides also inater i ailystrength en and reinforce the locking projections, to prevent their distortion or 'displacen-ient, and; it Wiifl' he noted that each ofthe locking rejections is, preferably locatedatifieceint, o the apex of a pair of flat sid es, (see Fig, That is to say, the corner termed. by a air of; sides crosses su-hsta nt-i'aily, mid- Way a line drawn through a locking" projectiioii, thus. materially assisting-i 11- strengthen the r0j;e ct-ion ,"'si';r1ee the angie term-ed; by a pair ofi relatively flat; sides'wi lij be e3; teiided somewhat over a locking projection, so as to bring'the same substantiallythere. under, and as this angle is somewhat-stronger than] the intermediate portions of the flat sides, it foliows that. the flexing Oifi the locking projections due to the application of the 0213 {to the containeris niatei ialily prev611ted;, Whiie atthesame time this location gives a somewhat wider locking face to the projection or lug at the center thereof.
Furthermore, by forming the skirt of a series of angularly connected friction surfaces so proportioned as to trictionally eugage the outer faces of container projeo tions, this will materially assist in preventing the lugs ot the cap from rotating bacle ward on the container and the consequent premature separation of the cap 'lroin the container during the shipi'nent or handling of the cap. Thus the cap will be maintained on the container both by these :t'ricti on sur faces oi large extent and by the legs, which is of considerable importance in the shipping and packing of containers or in the ordinary handling thereof on the shelves or stores or in the house.
In practice the cap will he provided with an annular groove 7 to contact with a suitable liner not shown, thereby to effect the ellioient sealing of the cap on the container.
I believe I am the first to provide a metal cap having a skirt or flange in which practically all ot' the shirt is oi polygonal. form, so proportioned as to lrictionally engage the outer faces of container projections or which extend from substantially the top to substantially its lower edge of the shirt, and therefore the first to provide a shallow flanged cap of such construction having locking projections at its lower edge, and also such a cap having a strengthened lower edge provided with locking lugs formed therefrom.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure, or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims or the requirements ot the prior art.
Having thus explained the nature of my said invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the terms in which it may be made, or all of the modes of its use, I claim:
