ROAD GRADER.

of which the following is a specification.-

This invention seeks to provide a simple,

strong, and durable machine of novel construction which may be easily operated and efiiciently employed for grading roads, leveling land surfaces, making ditches, clearing land of brush or removing snow from highways 01' feeding yards. and various other similar operations. The invention is illustrated in thejacconipan v'ing drawing and will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being particu larly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, I employ two side bars 1 which may be of any desired dimensions and are duplicates in construc tion, the said bars being each beveled at one end, as indicated at 2, whereby they may be fitted together in divergent relation, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. At proper intervals in the lengths of these side bars, cross bars or beams 3 and 4 are secured to and extend between the same so that the side bars will be very firmly braced and the machine given the strength necessary to resist the strains placed thereon when at Work. Upon the forward cross bar 3 is pivotally mounted a drawbar which is held to the said cross bar by a. bail 6 secured at its ends upon the cross bar and having its intermediate portion bridgin the drawbar and perforated to receive a pivot pin 7 whereby the drawbar is held in place. The drawbar is provided at its front end with a transverse opening 8 to facilitate the attachment of a draft device thereto and its rear end extends over and rests upon the rear cross bar 4. as shown. A uard 9 is secured at its ends upon the upper edges of the side bars 1 or the ends ofthe cross bar or brace & and its intermediate portion passes over the drawbar so as to hold the same against upward displacement, and a retaining pin 10 is engaged through any one of a series of openings 1.1--in the guard 9 and corresponding openings 12 in the drawbar to engage oneof thesockets 13 in the upper edge of the brace so that the drawbar will be held in any position in which it may be set.

To the outer face of each side bar, I secure a blade 14 consisting of a substantial steel plate running the entire length of the side bar and having its .lower'edge curved outwardly and sharpened, as indicated at 15. The forward end of each blade extends forwardly beyond the side bars, and these projecting extremities of the blades are brought into juxtaposition, as shown at 16, and firmly secured together, the forward edges thereof being sharpened and inclined slightly upwardly and rearwardly, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 2.

The manner of using the machine will, it is thought, be readily understood. from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. Draft is applied to the front end of the drawbar 5 so that the machine will be drawn over the road or ground surface and, as it moves forwardly, the front projecting extremities of the blades will penetrate the soil or other material and will out through the same, being followed immediately by the lower outturned sharp edges 15 of the blades so that a ditch will be formed and the dirt turned aside. If it be desired to spread the removed soil equally at the opposite sides of the machine, the drawbar is arranged along the central longitudinal line of the machine. as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, but, if it be desired to turn the dirt to one side, the rear end of the drawbar is shifted to the opposite side of the machine, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, whereupon, if draft be applied to the front end of the drawbar. the nearer side of the machine will merely serve as a landside to hold the machine to its work while the opposite side will cut away the dirt to form a ditch and will throw the dirt outwardly to the side of the ditch.

The machine is exceedingly simple in construction and may he built at a very low cost, Obviously, it may be used for a ill) great number of diilerent purposes and, when employed as a, snow plow, will effeqs tually throw the snow toboth sides of; the path being formed so that the cleaning of the path will be rgpi dly accomplished The machine may be used for removing brush and similar growth from a field and. will operate efiiciently for this purpose in asmuch as the sharpened;- edges; 0% the bh de will cut through the stalks of the brush immediately at the surface of the ground so that the field will be very rapidlycleared. The machine may be used upon a hillside as well as upon a comparatively level surface so. that ten-races may be formed as easily as ditches. are produced,
