G. V. WOOD BRAssIE-RE Filed August 6 1925 ATTORNEY.
Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
i GRACIA V. WOOD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BRASSIERE.
Application nled August To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACIA V. Woon, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Brassiere, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a brassiere, more particularly to that type serving as breast lifters, and is designed primarily for use of women before reachin maturity, and the invention has for its ob ect to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of such class to prevent the dropping of the breasts or protuberant glands thereby maintaining the same in normal or natural position to provide a symmetrical figure and impart grace to the form of the wearer and without causing any discomfort during the vwearing of the garment.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a brassiere of the type referred to, which is simple in its construction and.arrangement, strong, durable, elastic, thoroughly efficient in its use for the purpose as aforesaid, readily arranged in position with respect to the bosom, capable of being worn without any inconvenient feeling to the wearer, and inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown a brassiere in accordance with this invention, but it is ,to he understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scopeof the claim hereunto appended.
. In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding'parts through the several views:
Figure 1, is a front elevation .of a brassiere, in accordance with this invention, as applied to the wearer.
Figure 2, is a front elevation of the brassiere, when extended.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, in front elevation, of a modified form.
A brassire in accordance with this in- -vention comprises a body encircling band provided with a pair of spaced pockets, each shaped to conform to the contour of the breasts or protuberant glands, and a par of 6, 1925; Serial No. 48,615.
suspension members having their ends anchored with the band. e
The body encircling band consists of front and a pair of combined side and back portions and these latter'are adapted to be detachably connected together for securing the band in encircling position with respect to the body of the wearer. The front comprises a bottom strip 1, which consists of elastic webbing or reticulated elastic fabric, or any other suitable elastic material; The strip 1 is of substantial width and length, in fact the length of the strip 1 corresponds to the length of the entire front. The top of the strip 1, between its vertical and each end is provided with a semi-circular cutaway portion of the desired depth, and said portions are indicated at 2 3. Secured to the top edge of the strip 1, centrally thereof is a short piece of fabric 4 which is arranged in spaced relation with respect to a pair of oppositely disposed tapered extension 5, 6, projecting rom the inner ends of the combined sides and back portions. The lower edges of the extensions 5, 6 are secured to the top edge of the strip 1, and each of said extensions gradually decrease in width from its inner end towards its point of joinder with a combined side and back portion. The extensions 5, 6 at their inner ends are flush with the outer sides ofthe edges of the cuta way portions 2, 3 respectively and form continuations of such edges. The piece 4 has its ends flush with the inner sides of the edges of the cutaway portions 2, 3 respectively'and form continuations of such edges. The top edge of the piece 4 is of concave curvature.
By the foregoing construction the front is set up withan elastic lower portion, a
median flexible non-elastic upper portion, and a 1 at its outer end with a. plurality 'of Sn er-- posed hooks 10. The strip '9 has a straight Y lower edge'which aligns with the lower edge of the strip 1. The top edge of the strip 9 inclines upwardly from its outer toh tter below the extension 5." Theportion 8 comprising a t i 101 wards its inner end and terminates in the top'edge of the extension 5. The inner end of the str p 9 is of materially greater width than the strip' 1 and from theupper portio,fi'" of: such end projects the'ex'tension 5.
The strip 1 has oneend thereof secured to theedge of the strip 9 at the inner end of non-elastic fabric which has a straig t lower edge aligning with the lower edge of the f strip 1. The top edge ofthe strip 11 in- ;clines upwardlyfrom its outer towards its imn'er'and terminates in the to edge of the piece of fabric 11 is secured to the outer end of the strip. 11, and is provided with.
extension "6'. ,Theinner end 0 the strip 11 is'of materiall' greater width than the strip 1, andf-ron'ft e 11 per portion of such end proje'ctsthe extension, 6. The stri 1 has its other endsecured to the edge 0 the strip 11 at .the inner end thereof. An elastic or protuberant gland. The said element functions to prevent the breast from dropping and thereby maintains the same innormal or natural position to provide, in con; nection with the body enclrcling'band, a symmetrical figure and impart race to the form of the wearer. One of sai elements; is
generally referred to at 12 and-the other at 13. Each of said elements is formed of an upper and alower section 14, 15 respectively. T e lower section is formed from a strip of fabric cut to provide a semi-circular lower,
edge and a semi-oval upper edge. Theme terminal portions of said lower section are of less width than the intermediate portion thereof. The lower edge of the section 15. is secured throughout to the edge of a semicircular cut-away portion. The end ed of'-the sections 15 are in alignmentwith the top edges of the piece of fabric 4 and extensions 5, 6, and further extend .inwardly' atright angles with-respect to said piece 4 and entensions 5, 6. The-section }14 is sub-Q stantially of semi-oval contour and has its curved edge secured throughout to the upper edge of the section 15-ahd the top: edgeof the section 14 is in alignment wit the end or topxedges of the top section 15. By constructing each pocket forming element of' the sections 14, 15 in the manner as referred to and the securing of a section 15 to the edge of a cut-out portion, a pocket of the desired contour and area is provided to receive and enclose the breast. The mouth of each pocketopens' at the inner side of the band.' The pocket forming elements 12 and 13 project forwardly from the front ti e me'ntupon the wearer may readily be made by sliding the binder strip nliipon the tape and thenjtacking the tape a binder strip together to insure an" exact fit. A hinder or finishin tape 17 is arranged at the end and to e ges of the strip 1, and a hinder or finis ing strip 17' is arranged at the bottom edges of the strips 9 and 11.
Secured to the top edge of the strip 9, intermediate its ends, is one e d of a supporting or shoulder strap 18, which has its other end secured to the inner side of the top of thepocket-forming element 12. Secured to the outer side of the top of the element 12- is one end of a supporting strap 19, and the other end of the latter is secured to the strap 18, intermediate its ends.
Secured to'tlie edge of the strip 11, intermediate its en s,is-one end of a supporting'or shoulder strap 20, which has its other'end secured to the inner side of the top of the pocket-forming element 13. Secured to the outer side of .the top of the ele-' ment 13-1 is 'onej lend of a sup orting strap 21,-. and thebth'er end ofthe atter 18 connected to the' strap 20, intermediate its ends.
The strapsj18,- f 19, 20, and 21, provide means, in connection with the elements 12 and 13 to support the breasts in normal or natural position. A
In the form shown in Figure 3 the front of the band is formedof anelastic lower portion 22 and a non-elastic upper portion 23. In this form the front is cut out to provide a pair of spaced openings, only one of which is shown, which is indicated at 24,
and arranged partially in the upper and lower port ons 22, 23 of the front. The opening extends above the longitudinal center of the front. A cket-forming element .25 is secured throng out to the edge of the opening. The element 25 is constructed similar to the element 12 or 13. The supportin terial and terminates and back rtiona.
in the combined side It is thought that the many advantages of a brassiere of the breast lifting type, in
accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiments of the device is as illustrated of the front is formed of one piece of ma-.
and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is: g
A brassiere comprising a. body encircling band hating the lower part of the front thereof formed of a lengthwise extending elastic portion and the upper part of its front non-elastic, at its front with a pair of spaced cut-out portions extending through the non-elastic said band further provided part of said front and into the upper part of the elastic portion of said front, and a pocket forming element having its side and bottom edges secured to the edge bordering face of the front of the band and its top edge secured throughout with the band.
In testimon hereto,
y whereof, I afiix my signature GRACIA v. WOOD.
