MINING-MACHINE CHAIN LINK AND BIT.
Application filed January 21, 1322. Serial No. 530,917.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, NEWTON K. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowdil, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining-Machine Chain Links and Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved chain link and bit for mining machines and seeks, as one of its principal objects, to provide a construction wherein the bit stock and tooth employed will be supported at substantially right angles to the path of travel of the link.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction wherein the tooth will be firmly mounted upon the link but may, when desired, be readily detached to be renewed.

In carrying the invention into efl'ect, I employ a link comprising a body 10 provided with eyes 11 so that the link may be interposed in a mining machine chain-in the usual manner. At its outer end the link is provided adjacent one edge thereof with an upstanding lug or abutment 12 and formed in the link at-the base of said'abut'ment is a recess 13, the abutment having side flanges extending at opposite sides of the recess adjacent the rear wall thereof.- Projecting into said recess is a set screw 14: and formed through the link body to enter through the 20 lying between said recesses and the opening 15 and formed on the adjacent end wall of the recess 13 at the mouth of the recess 17 is a transverse locking rib or shoulder 21. The recesses 17 and 18 are provided to prevent the formation of rounded corners between the end walls of the recess 13 and the bottom wall thereof, in the casting of i the link.
In conjunction with the link, I employ a bit comprising a stock 22 which removably fits snugly in the recess 13 to project beyond the abutment 12. This stock rests at its lower end upon the. shoulder 19 of the link body and formed in the rear edge of 7 conjunction with the stock, I employ a clamping bar 25 which also removably fits snugly-in the recess 1370f the link body and rests upon the shoulder 20. This clamping bar is beveled at its-outer end and at the forward edge thereof is cut away to' define a longitudinally sloping V-shaped clamping face 26.
Remo'vably fitting between the stock 22 and clamping bar 25 is a segmental tooth 27. This tooth is double-endedwhile thev side walls or wings thereof curve longi tudinally of the tooth as well as also curve toward each other to form the ridge at the back of the tooth, and formed on said side walls at their free ed es, are reinforcing lugs 28 disposed medial y of the tooth. As
will be observed, the seat 24 is adapted to receive the tooth so that the tooth fits snugly therein to project at one end beyond theouter end of the stock while the clamping face 26 of the bar 25 is formed to fit within the tooth coacting with the side wings thereof. Thus, by properly adjusting the set. screw 14, the tooth may be rigidly clamped between said bar and stock, the outer end of the tooth curving forwardly over the bar. I accordingly provid'ean arrangement wherein the tooth will be supported at substantially right angles to the path of travel of the link or in other words at substantially right angles to the outer end of the link. When one end of the tooth becomes worn, the tooth may be removed and reversed end for. end, when the work may proceed, and, preferably, the tooth is formed of hardened wear resisting material so that wear upon the tooth will be minimized. The shoulders 19 and 20 serve to limit the downward movement of the stock and bit within the recess 13 of the link body, thereby obviating the necessity for gaging the distance to which the bit must be inserted within the link.
Having thus described the invention, wha is claimed as new is: i
1. In a mining machine, a chain link including a body having a recess opening through one end thereof and provided with an opening extending from said recess through the opposite end of the link body, the link body being formed with recesses at the bottom corners of said first mentioned recess to define shoulders lying between the latter recesses and said opening.
2. In a. mining machine chain link, a stock having a seat, a cutting tooth fitting said seat and having a longitudinally convex back and spaced wings, and a clamping bar bearing between said wings clamping the tooth between the stock and bar.
3. In a mining machine chain link, a stock having a seat, a cutting tooth fitting said seat, the tooth being elliptical in cross section and having spaced wings, and a clamp ing bar bearing between said wings clamping the tooth between the stock and bar.
4. In a mining machine chain link, a stock having a seat, a cutting tooth fitting said seat, the tooth having a longitudinally convex back and spaced divergent wings bowed away from each other, and aclamping bar beveled to fit between said wings clamping the tooth between the stock and bar.
5. In a mining machine, a chain link having an opening therethrough reduced to define spaced shoulders integral with the link, a stock projecting at one end of said opening resting at its inner end upon one of said shoulders, a clamping bar projecting at said end of the opening resting at its inner end upon the other of said shoulders,
and a cutting tooth clamped between the stock and said bar, said shoulders supporting the stock and bar against inward thrust.
6. In a mining machine, the combination of a chain link including a body having a recess therein and provided near one of the bottom corners of said recess with a shoulder as Well as with a cavity beneath said shoulder, a stock seated in said recess and providedwitha portion accommodated by said cavity to engage said shoulder, a clamping bar received in said recess, and a' cutting iooth clamped between the stock and said ar. 7. In a mining machine chain link, the combination of a body having a s uared recess therein to accommodate a stoc and provided in the rear of said recess with an upstanding abutment rising from the outer end face of the body to form a continuation of the rear wall of said recess for bracing the stock in the rear thereof to a point near the outer terminal of the stock, said abutment being formed with side flanges extending between the abutment and the outer end face of the body and disposed to form continuations of the side walls of said recess and flank the sides of the outer end of the stock for bracing the outer end of the stock laterally.
8. In a mining machine, a chain link having a recess provided upona wall thereof with an outstanding shoulder projecting into the recess, a stock fitting in said recess and cut away at its rear edge to define a shoulder engaging beneath said first mentioned shoulder locking the stock against outward displacement, a separate clamping bar fitting in the recess and having its length disposed longitudinally of the stock, and a relatively short cutting tooth having its inner end portion clamped between the outer ends of said bar and 7 stock.
