Description
NI'IED STATEs PATENT Grrrcn.
EDWARD WATSON KELLEY, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,524, dated December 8, 1874; application filed December 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WATSON KEL- LEY, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Nail Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement on a former patent granted to me the 23d day of May, 1871, and relates to improvements on the clipping-wheel, whereby the nail is guided properly into the space between the dies on said clipping-wheel, thereby preventing accidents to the machinery that might occur if a nail were placed edgewise between the dies previous to their closing together.
0n the drawing, Figure 1 represents a ground plan of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the line X X, shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents a crosssection on the line Y Y, shown on Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawings.
On this kind of clipping-machine it has been. found difficult to keep the nails in their proper position between the dies after they have left the rollers, and before the presser has got a firm hold of the nail.
When it happened that a nail got turned round or placed edgewise between the dies, something was sure to break, for the reason that the nail took a larger room between the dies than the machine was intended for; and to prevent this displacing of the nails between the dies is the purpose of my invention, wherefore I construct it as follows:
A is the rotating polygonal clipping-wheel, on each face of which is secured a male die,
' B. O is the presser or movable male die, that is pressed against the nail and the die B by means of a suitable locking apparatus, D, or similar device. I have only shown one set of dies, B G, on the drawing, but similar ones are used on the other faces of the polygonal wheel A. E E F F are the rollers, between which the nail is rolled and shaped previous to its reaching the space between the dies B O by passing through a suitable guide or tunnel. 011 each side of the dies B I attach to the said die, or to the clipping-wheel A, or in any other suitable manner, a small guidepiece, I) b, that projects a little above the face of the wheel A, and that serves as a rest and guide for the head of the nail till the presser O has got hold firmly on the nail.
I do not wish to confine myself to any particular construction of the said guide-pieces b b, as they may be made in one piece with the die B, or With the clippingwheel A, or in any other suitable way, as may be practical.
d, on Fig. 3, represents a nail resting and kept in its proper place between the aforesaid guide-pieces b b. The nail, after leaving the rollers E E, passes through a suitable guide or tunnel, G, by means of which the nail is guided into the space between the dies B 0.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I
wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In combination with the Wheel A and its dies B O, the employment and use of the guide-pieces b b on each side of the die B, as
and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing -I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of December, 1873.
EDWARD WATSON KELLEY.
