COLLAPSIBLE IJIANDREL.
Application filed July 29, 1925.

Be it known that I, CASPER MEHLUM, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at l/Valtham, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and usefulV Improvement in Collapsible Mandrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying' drawings.
The invention relates to a new and useful improvement in collapsible mandrels and relates especially to mandrels for use in the manufacture of fibre tubes although the device embodying the invention is not intended to be limited to such particular use.
Fibre tubes, particularly hard fibre tubes, areV usually formed out of cotton waste which is first formed into a web or sheet and then while wet is wound on a mandrel for a suflicient number of layers or windings to build upa tube of the thickness/required. After the tube has been built up to the requisite thickness by successive layers of the web of libre, it is dried hard. It may be either dried on the mandrel on which it is made or it may be removed from the mandrel on which it is made and slipped on to another mandrel or form on which it is dried.
The object of the invention is to prov;de a collapsible mandrel of snnple con- Vstruction on which the fibre tube may be vice embodying the invention, the mandrel being in its expanded form.

The main body portion of the mandrel comprises two semi-cylindrical sector mem bers 11, hinged together at 12. The two members 11, 11 are each somewhat less than 180 so that there is an opening 1I.) between the side edges 1st, 1% of the two members 11, 11 as shown in Fig. (5. This` opening is adapted to be closed by a separable sector member 15 to form the complete cylinder when the mandrel is in expanded operative form shown in Fig. r1`he separable sector member 15 is formed with flanges 16, 16 on the inner periphery at its two side edges which when the said closure member 7 is in yclosed position engage the inner 'periphery respectively of the two semi-cylindrical body members 1l, 1l.
The said closure member 15 is mounted upon a pair of parallel longitudinal bars 17, 17 which are spaced slightly apart from each other and receive between them the ends of a plurality of links 18 which are pivotally connected therewith by pivot pins 1S). The other ends of said link members 1S are pivotally connected at 2O to lugs 2l secured to the inner periphery of one of the semi-eylindrical body members 1l. Then the sa'd links 18 are in the position shown in Fig. 1 extending at right angles to the axis of the mandrel they will hold the meniber 15 in closed position in the slot or open ing' 13 between the edges lil, 1lof the bof v members 11, 11. By turning the said link members down into an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 5, the said closure member 15 will be moved down within the hollow space of the mandrel and out of closure position, as shown in Fig. 6, whereupon the two side members 11, 11. may be turned on their hinges so as to bring the edges 14, 14e of said two members 11 nearer together and thereby collapse the mandrel.
Means are provided whereby the said closure member may be operated. The members 17, 17 have extension port-ions 7 at one end, the left-hand end as viewed in Figs.` 1 and 5, which extend somewhat beyond the end of the closure member 15. A pin 23 extends transversely between the said extension portions 7. A pin 241 projects inwardly at right angles from a lug 25 secured to the inner periphery of one of the body members 11. An operating lever 26 shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 is formed with slots 8, 9 respectively which may be engagedwith the said pins 23 and 2A so that when the lever is turned, as shown in F 5, the rods 17, 17 will be moved toward the lett and downward into the position shown in Fig. 5, thereby lowering the closure member l5 into the interior of the mandrel, as shown in Fig. 6, and permitting the collapsing ot' the members l1, 1l on their hinges. VJhen it is desired to return the mandrel into operative form the lever will be moved bac-k into the vertical position as shown in Fig. l, thereby closing the mandrel.
TWhat l claim is:
l. A collapsible hollow mandrel comprising two segmental body members hinged together at two adjacent vside edges and forining together a simi-'cylindrical body somewhat less than a complete hollow cylinder with an Lopen space between their adjacent tree edges, a movable segment shaped meinber adapted to close the said open space, said closure member having a longitudinal rib on its inner periphery, a plurality of links extending .transversely across the interior of the mandrel and pivotally connected at one end with said rib member and at thc'other end with one ont said body ineinbers, said links being normally at right aiij y hinged edge thereof, said links being norgles to the anis of the mandrel to maintain the closure member in operative position, said rib and closure member heilig movable both longitudinally and radially inward, thereby turning the linlrs into Van inclined position relative to the airis and moving the closure member out of closure position.

A collapsible hollow' mandrel comprising twosegmental body members hinged together on two adjacent side edges and iiorining together a semi-cylindrical body somewhat less'than acomp'lete hollow cylinder withan open spa-ce between their adjacent free edges, a movable segment shaped .member adapted to close the' said open space, said closure member having a longitudinal rib on its inner periphery, a plurality of links extending diainetrically across the. interior of themandrel and piv- Lerares otally connected at one end with said rib member and at the other end with the inner periphery of one of said body members adjacent the hinged edge thereof, said links boing normally at right angles to the axis oi the mandrel to maintain the closure member in operative position, said rib and closure member being rigidly connected together and movable longitudinally and radially inward, thereby turning the links into anincliiied position relative to the aXis and moving the closure member out ot closure position.
