Be it known that I, Jnssn A. B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing vin, Stamford, in the ,county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and vuseful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which'the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to typewriting Inachines, and particularly to a continuous web typewriting machine, including means for controlling a record-web to lecelve-a condensed record of matter typed on the successive forms that are printed on a workweb.
In some classes of continuous billing work, it is desirable to provide a condensed record or tally on which thereappear only the names of the customers to whom the bills are sent.v Accordingly provision is made whereby only the first line of each bill is printed through onto the record-web; and, in order thatsuch entries on the record-web may be closely arranged the recordweb is caused to progress only one linespace 'for eachbill that-is written. The present invention provides a machine for doing this class of work quickly and efficiently. The inven tion is not limited, however, to the typing of a single line of each bill onto the recordweb, nor to the typing of the line orlines f at the head of the bill onto the record-web.
In the preferred form of the invention and as herein illustrated, provision may be made in a continuous billing type-writing machine of the displaceable platen type, such, for example, as 'the machine disclosed in the patent to Wernery & Smith No.

Throughout the further typing of the bill, the record- Web is fed by the platen frornthe rear to the front thereof, but receives no impressions. This feeding creates a slack in the record- Web at the delivery side of the platen.
Provision is made of means for 'causing the record-web take-up roll to Wind up and firmly hold against unwinding a portion of this slack equal in lengthv to the portion of the record-Web which has been typed upon in the writing of the previous bill, and of means for withdrawing the remainder of the slack to the introductory side `of the platen when the platen is displaced.
To this end, the platen-displacing framerelease handle is arranged, when operated, to engage a record-web line-space slide having a pawl thereon to engage a line-space ratche -wheel secured to the take-up roll. Said roll is alsoprovided with a locking wheel engaged by a locking pawl to prevent unwinding of the record-web during a carbon-retracting and slack-withdrawing operation..`

amount that had been Written upon, and that this portion of the web was locked against unwinding by the locking Wheel and paWl. When the slack in the record-Web has been taken up, the friction device connecting the record-web and the carbon-carrier yields,permitting the carbon-carrier to continue its rearward movement, While the record-web remains stationary. It will be seen that the net result of the line-feeding of the record-Web by the platen, the linespacing of the take-up roll and the retracis an advance of 4the record-web a distance equal to the length of said web that has been Written upon.
lVhile the take-up vroll line-feedinglmechanism is controlled by the displacing-framereleasing lever, the movement of this lever to line-feed the take-up roll is not necessarily followed by the displacing' of the before the operative stroke of the paWl' is completed. This would tend to make the length of the line-feeding steps uncertain. To overcome this, provision is made of a spring-detent for engaging a toothed Wheel fast to the take-up roll to control the length of the feeding steps. In addition to this, a latch is provided on the displacing frame to hold the displacing'frame down until the line-spacing operation has been completed. This latch is located to be engaged and moved to ineffective position by the linespace slide at the end of its operative stroke.
In accordance with one feature of the invention, a record-Web-supply reel is mounted upon the carbon-carrier of the machine, and the friction device also mounted on the carbon-carrier serves as a brake or drag on the record-Web roll to prevent unwinding of the record-web before the slack has been taken up in the retraction of the carbon-carrier. The mounting of the record-Web reel on the carbon-carrier is important, because it obvates the creation of objectionable Sla-ck at the, int roductory side of the machine. The supply-reel moves forward-bodily With the carbon-carrier at the line-spacing operation of the platen, so that none of the web carried by it is unwound. l

The typewriting machine includes types 10 mounted to swing upwardly and rearwardly against the front face of a cylindrical platen 11, journaled by its axle 12 ln the ends of a displaceable platen-frame 13. This frame 13 is mounted to swing about stub-shafts 14 on the traveling carriage 15, which moves in letter-feed and ret-urn directions upon front and rear rails 16. The platen 11. is connected, through gears 35 upon the ends of its axle 12, pinions 36 on the carriage 15 and cooperating gears 37 on the carriage, with the usuallline-spacing mechanism and with platen-rotating iiligerwvlieels 38, one of which is shown. The

Helmond, Serial No. 609,560, filed December 29, 1922; that is to say, the gears '35 leave engagement with the pinions 36 when the platen is displaced and are caused to reengage the pinions when the platen is lowered.
For providing a condensed record of a portion of the matter written on the bills, provision is ymade of a record-WebLsupply reel 39` mounted on brackets 40 carried by `the carbon-carrier for reciprocation there- `with. This reel may have wound upon 1t both afrecord-web 41, and a carboneweb 42 for making impressions upon the record-weh.- Since itis only the first line of each bill that is to be reproduced upon the record-web 41, it is desired to avoid the printing through to the record-web of any matter after theiist line. For this purpose', a flexible shield 43 is mounted on a blade 44 of the carbon-carrier to lie between the record-web 41 and its carbon 42, this shield being adjusted to terminate at its forward extremity a short dis'- tance behind the carbons 26 and hence a short distance below the line fof writing when the carbon-carrier is in itsfully retracted position. At the writing of a bill, the lirst line or lines are printed through on the recordweb 41 according to the adjustment of the shield 43, but, after this, the writing of the bill proceeds without any impressions being made on the record-web.

In accordance with an important feature 'of the resent invention, provision is made at the -t elivery side of Vthe platen of means for winding up a portion ofthe record-web equal in length to the portion which has been written upon, and for holding such woundup portion ,firmly against unwindingav4 Such Y means may comprise a take-up roll 45 moufnt-l ed in ears 46 extending rearwardly from a plate-like bracket 47, secured to the front paper-table 48' that commonly forms a part of the platen-displacing frame 13. ratchet-wheel 49 is fast upon the axle 50 of this roll 45, and is arranged yto be ydriven step by step by a pawl 51 pivoted on a linespace slide ,52 mounted in a bracket 53 fixed on the carriage 15 of the machine. Thelinespace slide 52 has an arm 54 arranged in the path of the displacing-frame-release'handle 2S., the arrangement being such that movement of the release-handle to the rearNpreparatory to the lifting of the displacing frame 13, actuates the line-space slide 52 to thrust the pawl 51 to the rear, and thereby feed the ratchet-wheel 49 a tooth-space, winding the record-web 41 onto the take-up roll 45. The line-space slide 52 is returned to its forward position by aspring 55.
There is a possibility -of the operators lifting the displating frame 1,3 as soon as it is released by the handle 28 and prior to the completion of the line-spacing of the takeup. roll 45. lin order to prevent this, provision is made of a latch 56 pivoted on the bracket 47 for engaging a locking pin 57 on thebracket 53. This latch has an ear 55 arranged to be engaged by a projection 59 on the line-space slide 52 to move the latch clear of the locking pin 57 at the end of the line-spacing movement of `the slide. A spring 60 tends to maintain the latch 56 in raised clear of the pin, the forward move- -ment of the latch being limited by engageasA ment of an ear.y 61 with the bracket 47. In
order to enable the latch 56 to reengage beneath the lockingpin 57, upon the return ofthe latch to its lowered position, the lower surface 62 of the latch isibeveled,.so thatthe latch may be cammed back by the locking pin and may then snap beneath said pin Y it, and is limited in its movement by a notched disk 70 fast to the cam and to the finger-piece and arranged to have the ends of its notch moved into engagement with a pin 71 on the bracket 47. v
Provision is also made at the opposite side of the carriage of a locking pawl 72 to engage between the teeth ot a locking wheel 7'3 fast on the axle 50 of the take-up roll 45 to prevent retrograde motion of said roll. This pawl 72 is pivoted upon the bracket 47 and is urged toward the locking wheel `73 by a spring 74. Provision is also made for rendering this locking pawl 72 ineffective when it is desired `to unwind the completed record-web 41 from the take-up roll 45. A
cam 75 may be moved between positions to' render the pawl effective and ineffective by Va 'knurled finger-piece76, the positions of the cam being determined by a pin 77 on the .bracket 47 which engages with shoulders 7 8 v on the cam 75.
The take-up roll may also be rotated at any time by means of a finger-wheel 7 9 fast on the axle 50.
The displacing frame 13 and the mechanism carried by it are braced and in part supported by legs 79a which extend downwardly and rearwardly from the bracket 47 to rest upon the forward ends of the rails 18. When' a billis first begun, the carbons 26 and the shield 43 are fully retracted, the shield being located a short distance below the line of writing, as shown in Figure 4. The first line is then written, and this line is copied through on the record-web because the shield 43 is ineffective. At the subse- I quent line-spacing of the platen, the shield 43 is fed forward to cover the line of writing, so that subsequent lines written on the bill-web are not reproduced upon the recordweb. The typing of the bill proceeds until the bill has been completed, as indicated, for example, in Figure 5. During this typing, the carbon-carrier 25 with the record-web reel 39 is drawn forward toward the platen 11, and the record-web 41 together with the bill-web 22 is line-fed by the platen. The record-webv 41 together with the bill-web 22 is line-fed by the platen. The record-web 41 is not taken up, however, by the take-up roll 45, buteforms a slack at the delivery side of the platen, as indicated in Figure 5. The platen is then displaced, as shown in Figure and the carbon-carrier 25 6, after which the bill-web 22 is drawn for. ward to the gage 31, as shown in Figure 7,
Movement of the carbon-carrier 25' to the rear, besides retracting the carbons 26, servesto withdraw the record-web slack from the delivery side of the platen until the position of the carbon-carrier shown in Figure'7 has been reached. To assure this mode of operation, a friction brake 80, pivoted at 81, on the carbon-carrier 25, is pressed by a spring 82 into engagement with the periphery of is retracted..
the record-web roll 39, to prevent unreeling vof the record-web 41 so long as any slack exists. When all ofthe slack has been taken up, as seen in Figure 7, the continued rearward movement of the carbon-carrier 25 into engagement with an adjustable stop 83, as seen in Figure 8, 'is effective to unreel the record-web 41 and the record-web carbon 42.
In Figures 12, 13 and 14, the preferred forni of record-web-controlling device is shown. The record-web is led from the rear of the machine through a slotted gage bar 84 on the carbon-carrier 25, and thence between clamping bars 85 and 86, the latter of which is provided with rubber feet 87 to exert a frictional drag upon the record-web 41. The shield 43 is clipped to the bar 85. The operation of this form of the invention is like the one already described, the recordweb 41 being retracted with the carboncarrier 25 until all of the slack has been taken up, and then being; caused to remain stationary during the farther retraction of the carbon-carrier.
In this preferred form, it willl be noted that a commercial form of record-web is employed; that the friction-brake applied to the web at the rear of the platen to retract the slack in the web at the front of' the y web, all of' which are displaceable with the platen-frame; that the displaceable frame is normally locked to the carriage by a manually-operable latch; that a rearward swing of said latch to release the platenframe for a displaceable movement simultaneouslyA operates the line-spacing mechanism of the record-web roll; and that, to prevent the premature displacement of the platen-frame before a full line-spacing movement or the'record-web has taken-place, a supplemental frame-locking means must iso roll a line-space dimension at the end of each rctractive movement of the carrier.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used Without others.

l. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, a platen-displacing frame and a carn-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of a record-web and record-web-` carbon bearing roll mounted on the carboncarrier, a shield also carried by the carboncarrier 'between the record-web and its carbon, constructed and arranged to prevent the copying through onto the record-web of all matter typed on the work-web except a portion written in a predeterminedy lfield longitudinally of the work-web, yfeed-rolls co-operating` with the platen to feed the work-web and record-'web together, recordweb take-up mechanism at the delivery side of the platen to take up and hold against retraction a stretch responding in length to thel length of the record-web field typed upon, and a friction device on the carbon-carrier engaging the record-web to cause the record-web to be .drawn tothe rear by the carbon-carrier until all of the slack at the delivery side ofv the platen created by the line-'feeding of-thc record-web by the platen has been taken up, and then to permit the record-web to remain stationary during the further retraction of the carbon-carrier.
2. 3. In a continuous billing typewriting machine,l the combination with a revoluble platen, a platen-displacing frame and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the' platen, of record-web-supply means mounted on the carbon-carrier to travel therewith toward and from the platen, record-web 'take-up means on the platen-displacing frame at the delivery side of the platen, and means to prevent the withdrawal of the record-Web from the Web-Supply means so long as there is any slack in the record-web between the supply and take-up means.`
4. In a typewriting machine, a cylindrical platen, work-feeding means co-operating With the platen to feed a work-web together with an underlying record-web and record- Web-carbon around the platen from rear to front, means at the delivery side of the platen to' take up and hold against retraction a portion of the record-web and its carbon, and means to retract to the introductory side of the platen that portion of the record-web and its carbon not heldby the take-up means.
5. In a typewriting machine, a cylindrical platen, means co-operating with the platen to feed a record-web around the platen from rear to front together with work-ply, means to retract the record-web independently of the superposed work-ply, and means to limit the retraction of the reeord-wcb.
G. Ina continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a platen-displacing frame, a revoluble platen therein and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of a record-web takeup roll mounted on the platen-displacing frame for movement to a position such that the record-Web can be substantially straightcnedl beneath the .displaced platen, and means connecting the record-'web to the carbon-carrier to cause the accumulated slack in therecord-web at the delivery side of the v'platen to be retractedy to the introductory side ot' the platen by the retraction of the carbon-carrier.
7. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a displaceable platen-frame, a revoluble platen therein and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of a set of carbons eX- ten'ding forward from the carbon-carrier to print upon the inside plies of a composite a superpcsed' the platen,
work-web, a shield carried by the carboncarrier to extend forward to within about one line-space of the forward extremities of the carbons to lie between a record-web adjacent the platen and a carbon for printing on the record-web to prevent the reproduction on the 'record-web of allbut the first line typed on the work-web, means co-operating with the platen to feed the work-web and record-web together, a take-u roll for the record-web on the displaceab e platenrame, means for holding the displaceable platen-frame down in writing position, a handle for releasing the platen-frame, linespace mechanism for the record-web take-up roll arranged to be operated by the movement of the platen-.frame-release handle,
means to lock the record-web on the takeup roll against unwinding, and means on the carbon-carrier for yieldingly gripping the record-web to retract to the introductory side of the platen that portion of the recordweb which was line-fed to the delivery side of the platen with the work-web, and which was not taken up by the line-spacing of the take-up roll.
8. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, a platen-displacing frame and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from of record-web-controlling means comprising record-web take-up and holding mechanism carried by the platen-displacing frame.
9. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a revolublc platen, a` platen-displacing frame and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of record-web-controlling mechanism comprising a record-web-winding roll and means for turning the roll indeperdently of the platen to wind the recordwe 10. In a continuous bi-lling typewriting machine, thel lcombination with a revoluble platen, a. platen-displacing frame and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of record-web-controlling mechanism comprising a take-up roll, means to line-space the take-up roll` detent-means to control the extent of the line-spacing, and locking means to prevent reverse feeding of the take-up roll.
12. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, a platen-displacing .frame and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of record-web-controlling mechanism comprising a take-up roll, means to line-space the take-up roll, detent-means to control the extent of the line spacing, lock ing means to prevent reverse feeding of the take-u roll, and means to render the detent an locking means ineffective when desired to permit the unwinding of the record-web. 13. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, they combination with a revoluble platen, a' platen-displacing frame and -a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of record-web-controlling mechanism comprisin a take-up roll, feeding means for the ta e-up roll, locking means for the roll to prevent unwinding of the record-web, and means to disable said locking means when desired.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with arevoluble platen around `which a work-ply and an underlying recordweb ma be fed, of a record-web take-up roll at t e delivery side of the platen, feeding means for the take-up roll, locking means for the take-up roll comprising a locking wheel and .a locking pawl to cooperate therewith to prevent unwinding ot the roll, and means to disable the locking means comprising a cam to bear against the pawl and a linger-piece to turn the cam.
15. In a 'typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen around which a work-web and an underlying record-web may be fed, of a record-Web take-up roll at the delivery side of the platen, feeding means for the take-up roll, means for controlling the extent of feeding of the take-up roll, comprising a toothed wheel fast to the roll and a springdetent to bear against the wheel, a. cam movable to render'the detent ineffective, a handle for operating the cam, and means Vto limit the 'movement of the cam to its effective and ineffective positions.
16. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a displaceable platen-frame and a revoluble platen therein, of a tally-strip take-up roll on the displaceable platen-frame, a hook for holding the displaceable platen-frame in writing position, a handle for moving the hook to' release the platen frame, and mechanism operated by the movement of the handle to line-feed the take-up roll.
17. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a displaceable platen-frame anda revoluble platen therein, of a tally-strip take-up roll on the displaceable platen-frame, a hook for holding the displaceable platen-frame in writing iso position, a handle for moving the hook to release the platen-frame, and mechanism operated by the movement of the handle to linefeed the take-up roll, comprising a line-space slide, a pawl carried by the slide, and a ratchet-wheel fast to the take-up roll to beactuated by the pavvl.
18. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a platendisplacing frame and a revoluble platenl therein, of a tally-strip take-up roll on the v platen-displacing frame, .a hook for holding the platen-displacing frame in writing position, a handle for moving the hook to release the platen-frame, and mechanism operated by the movementl of the handle to line-lced the take-up roll, comprising a linespace slide mounted on the machine-frame independently of the platen-displacing frame, a' pawl carried by the line-space slide,
and a ratchet-wheel fast to the take-u roll,
latching means for holding the disp acing frame down until the lineespace slide has completed its operative movement, and means carried by the line-space slide to engage and move the latching means to release the latter at the conclusion of the operative movement of the line-space slide.
19. In a continuous` ,billing typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage, a platen-displacing frame and a revoluble platen therein of a bracket on the displacing frame, a tally-strip take-up roll on the bracket, line-space mechanism for the take-up roll onthe bracket, and legs extending downward from the bracket to engage the carriage to brace and sup ort the bracket in the line-spacing of the ta ve-up roll.
20. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a carbon-carrier reciprocable toward and from the platen, of a workwebsupply holder mounted on the carbon-carrier for travel therewith.
21. In a typewritingmachine, means for marking impressions upon a Work-ply, a-
shield constructed to prevent the marking of impressions upon said Work-ply, and a carrier for the shield to move the shield to and from its effective position.
22. A web-manifolding machine having a carriage, a displaceable platen-frame normally locked to the carriage, a record-web to be fed around the platen, a roll to wind' up the delivery end of the record-web, and mechanism to jointly release'the platenframe and line-space the winding-up roll to feed the record-Web.-
23. In a typewriting machine for typing upon a plurality of work-plies 'and upon a record-ply, a cylindrical platen, a carboncarrier to hold carbon interleaved between the work-plies, and a shield carried by the carbon-carrier to overlie a portion of the record-ply to prevent the marking of impressions thereon, said shield being adjustable to change its effective length according to the length of the carbon, the travel of the carbon-carrier, and the extent of the recordweb area which it is desired to expose for receiving impressions.
24. In a typewriting machine, a platen, means for supplying a-record-Web and a carbon-web to print thereon, a shield interposed between the record-web'and its carbon-web, and arranged to be line-fed therewith, a carrier for the shield' advanceable with the shieldat line-feeding, and means for moving the carrier to retracttheshield below the line of writing from time to time to make the shield ineffective.
