Description

Patented Feb. 2, `1926.
BERT W. Diarra, oF bancas-ram omo.
B0X PACKER. 1- l Application led. .Tune 12, 1925. Serial No. 36,607.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, BERT IV. Dnrra, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Packers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the packing of boxes, baskets and other receptacles with small merchandise and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive construction of holder' or former in which the articles may be first packed and over which the box to be filled is inverted and then the combined box and holder are turned through 180 to permit the merchandise to discharge from the holder into the box.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a former having only four walls, and means for supporting the former in an inclined position in order to retain the merchandise therein; the supporting means providing handles for withdrawing the former at the proper time in the process of packing a box.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the 'following description when taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the former or holder'.
Figure 2. is a verticalsection through the holder showing the same resting in an in clined position on a horizontal support.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hold er with a packing box inverted and partly telescoped therein; and
Figure 4 is a. perspective view of the box and packing former, the box being in upright position and the packing former ready for withdrawal.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the numeral 1 indicates the packer generally, and comprises a back Wall 2, side walls 3 and a bottom 4. These walls may be formed of sheet iron and the bottom 4 of wood, or a lighter material may be employed for both the bottom and Walls, depending entirely of course upon the maferial to be packed.
It willxbe apparent that since the front of the packer as well as the top thereof are open it is necessary that some means be pro vided for preventing the material from falling out of the packer in the course of loading the same. Accordingly I have provided the elements 5 which are triangular or wedge-shaped strips secured to the lower side of the bottom. These strips are so positioned as to cause the packer to assume a tilted or inclined position when seated on a table or the like for filling. This position of the packer is clearly indicated in Figure 2, and obviously the articles placed in the packer so disposed will have no tendency to fall through the front of the box. These strips 5 which cause the packer to assume an inclined position also serve the function of handles in withdrawing the packer l from the box after the same is placed in the position shown in Figure 4.
In operation, the apples or other articles of merchandise are placed in the packer` while resting in the position shown in Figure 2, the articles of course, being inserted through the open front of the packer. After the packer is filled a box or receptacle A. is inverted over the same as shown in Fig. 3 and the combined box and packer is then inverted so as to assume the position shown in Figure 4. The triangular strips 5 are then grasped by the operator and the packer withdrawn from the box leaving the merchandise properly packed therein.
As hereinbefore stated, the packer may be formed of any suitable material, it being essential however that the front of the packer be left open, not only for the purpose of facilitating the loading of the packer but also to reduce the cost of construction, and that means be provided to support the packer in an inclined position during the packing process so as to avoid .loss of the articles through the front opening, as well as to provide handles for removing the packer from the box.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention, as many changes and mondiiications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all .such I aim to include in the scope of the :appended claims.
niet I claim as new and desire to secure ing :L back Wall, :L bottom Wall, and two side by Letters Patent is: Walls providing an open top and front, and 10 1. A box packer comprising :L former hava combined handle and support secured t0 ing an open front and top and one o11 more the bottom Wall, whereby the formel1 may 5 tapered strips Secured to the bottom of the be supported in backwardly inclined posi- 'ormer for supporting the same in a backtion. wardly inclined position.
